Upgrading my Razer Deathstalker (chicklet rubber dome) keyboard
« on: Mon, 16 August 2021, 16:18:50 »
Hello everyone! I got Razer Deathstalker keyboard recently and I like it even considering its flat keycaps design and its font (personally I like it). However, I think that this is not enough. The sound is somewhat loud and the keys tend to bind on off-center keypresses. So, how can I fix these two problems? btw, feel free to ask me anything about this keyboard

Unfortunately there isn't all that much you can do. The deathstalker is a mostly proprietary board with little/no aftermarket support. "Chicklet rubber dome" isn't too much of selling point in the hobby. If it were a mechanical switch I could say things like 1) spring swap 2) lubing 3) o-rings but those aren't really an option.

_maybe_ you could add a thin layer of foam to deaden the sound? I guess you could also lube the key stem? That's not sealed system though, and is likely to attract dirt/dust and leak under the membrane.

My best recommendation is to get something with proper mechanical switches. They're not super common, but low-profile, uniform key profiles do exist.

Being rubber dome chicklet, that's pretty much a death sentence for that board.

My advice, sell it and buy/build a board to your own specs.

talking about getting a mechancal keyboard, I will say that I have two of them: one with MX Browns (I like it) and one with Kailh BOX Whites (I like white boxes linearized)

returning to the question about my chicklet keyboard, I will ask one question: where do I need to apply the foam?

I decided not to sell keyboards no matter how bad they are in certain ways. I decided to upgrade this keyboard because I like how this keyboard looks and how it performs at typing (I am perverted, I know). So, I will buy some lube for this keyboard.

also I want to buy an Apex 100 keyboard with "mechanical feeling" domes, I heard this keyboard performs well at typing

where do I need to apply the foam?

That suggestion was more of a "I suppose it's possible, but I have no clue how it would be done or what it would sound like".

The only place where it would be possible is behind the pcb (instead of between the plate and pcb, as is more popular with mech boards these days), though it wouldn't do much. See how much space you have between the case and pcb, and go from there.

The case of this keyboard is pretty thin, there is nowhere to put some foam. I heard that it's possible to put some foam in the stem (some video about modding a membrane keyboard), but I am afraid that this wouldn't work in the chicklet

I have read this post about lubing. So, as I can see, there is no way out except selling it and buying a normal rubber dome keyboard, like Apex 100 or BTC Dome with Slider keyboard
