[IC]Class 65% by MM Studio
« on: Tue, 02 November 2021, 04:15:04 »
Class65

The Class65 designed by us, MMStudio, was inspired by

by the artist Florian Renner his take on the modern Gameboy gave us the idea to try to incorporate parts of its design into the board.

Please make sure to give feedback on the board on the IC FORM

Design Elements

The Class65 features a Macro column and an exploded 65 column, with a plateless design. It uses leaf springs gaskets in order to have a both soft and bouncy typing experience. There is an optional POM plate. To help give it a strong sound we implemented a hidden brass weight. We will offer two types of plates PCB mount and Plate mount. This option was done because we wanted to allow for others to chose what they wanted. The ease of access to stabs with plate mount, or the stronger connection with PCB mount. Final design decision was center USB-c Port because Centered life is best life.

With an expected price of 290 for the whole kit

The GB will be held on our site MMStudio

Breakdown

Poron kit (Foam is not required, only included for optional use)

Colors

Pink, Beige, Silver, Black

Renders

This looks very interesting. I especially enjoy the PCB leaf design. You've certainly packed a lot of features into this pricepoint I look forward to seeing how this progresses.

Was any consideration given to the inner weight design? Was that done for sound or for aesthetics? I'm curious if you have prototyped different inner designs for sound qualities.

Also, what is the width of the blockers next to the macro column and exploded 65 column? Thanks!

Not to take away from the neat design and price point being very good, but I would caution everybody about jumping on this. They obviously are very new to the scene as their discord has 3 people in it at the time of typing this out, and there isn't a prototype in the post. If this GB were to go up tomorrow I would strongly recommend refraining from giving them any money, at least until  there is a proof of keyboard.

Yes, we are a new studio, we are committed to complete good work, later we will update the evaluation video, you can pay attention to it.

0.25u

Do you mean 0.5u? The renders and layout images show spacing that is obviously wider than a quarter of a unit.

Edit to add on: That is a cool-looking PCB! Nothing new, but I haven't seen many keyboards actually use that sort of design. I think it'll pair well with the plate-less design.

This is really exciting, I love everything about this.

However,
I, too, am concerned around the low price point and no prototype. Seems like you may be jumping the gun a bit with the December group buy date. What happens if you get the prototype and you don't like how it sounds or feels? Will you continue with the GB or hold it off until you get it right?

Totally agree with this. This board looks very promising and would be really good value at 270$. But you really need a prototype before going into GB. Please delay the GB until you have a prototype to show and have made changes, if needed. You might even have a buyer in me if the prototype comes out well.

I am not a fan of oversized cases, so this isn't something I would personally buy. But what has me intrigued is that PCB design. I would love to see how this board feels when it is built plateless. I wish that was an option on more boards. Not a buyer, but I really hope this board goes to GB and I get a chance to try someone else's one day.

This is so good. If half the feedback you get is basically "this is too good to be true", you know you're doing something very right - I hope your intent is truthful, if it is you have a real winner here.

I'd like to know how you intend on achieving the colours that you're pitching, and I may have missed it but what's the case material here even?

Best of luck and I look forward to seeing a working prototype and all that good stuff!

Frankly, nobody is forcing you to.

You could have also gone to their website as listed in the OP and seen the information just the same: https://mmstudio.store/products/groupbuy-class65

Group Buy
Date: Feb 20th.

Quantity: The soft cap is 500, so everyone should be able get one, but still, don’t take too long time, we can’t tell how fast it will be sold out.

Shipment: We want to keep the GB shipment lead time within 4 months (ESD) and overachieving the soft cap will only increase the lead time. All Units will be fulfilled at once.

The in-stock sale in January was solid, but the group buy this month has turned into a total joke. They changed the design from what's presented in the OP substantially. I placed my order thinking I was buying what's now become known as the "V1" only to then have the buy get halted a day later and a bunch of news about a "V2" come out and that all GB orders are actually for the V2.

The Discord tells all.

The original in-stock board seems great by all accounts. I wish I'd copped it then rather than waiting for the GB since now it seems pretty much a lost cause and I'm likely to just request a refund and wait for another board...

The buy is on right now: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=116367.0

Primary difference is V2 gained the option for a Bluetooth PCB (hotswap only) which includes a battery, while the wired solder/hotswap versions now have an optional weight for where the battery otherwise goes (default is a foam insert - you need to buy the weight as an extra).

Pink was also replaced by grey as a result of supply issues with the pink ano colouring.
