[IC] Hira70 - FRL TKL
« on: Mon, 04 July 2022, 15:33:34 »

Hira70

Hello, I am Saab and this is a very early IC for my first project that I have been working for well over a year.
Hira70 is a FRL TKL

The inspiration behind this project sparked during my time in Punjab, Hira in Punjabi is the translation for a Diamond or a Gem.
The weight is designed to remind the user of a diamond on the back of their keyboard.

Majority of the trial and error was done for the weight, in the beginning I was not able to find a manufacturer that would be willing to work with me for this geometrical design.
Some even said that its impossible, the weight I was after is supposed to be shiny, reflective and reflect light like a diamond would.

Specs:

Layout : FRL TKL
Case Material : Aluminium 6061 Anodised
Weight Material : Brass
Mounting : Isolation Mount
Front Height : 20mm

Pricing
Price : >400 (my aim is to keep the price below 400$)
This is a very rough estimate as the price may go up or down.
Units : 250
First Come First Serve
As for Vendors, the results from IC form will help pick the vendors.

PCB & Layout Options:
Compatibility : QMK and Via
Thickness : 1.6mm
Solder PCB only at the moment (unless demand for HS is there)

Layouts:

Exploded View:

Prototype Pics:

These are prototypes and therefore they will have defects on the finishing.
This will not occur during production stage.

As for prototypes, I am very happy with how they turned out. Large amount of prototyping was done for the Weight.
I experimented with different finishes, started off with a simple plain polished Stainless Steel Weight. That was too plain in my opinion.
Then multiple prototypes were done for the diamond shaped brass weight. This was done using electroplating process as polishing this weight would be impossible.
I also plan on adding an option for Sand Blasted Weight for different aesthetics.

Polished Stainless Steel, Brass Electroplated, Brass Electroplated. in order from top to bottom

Renders:
The renders were done by NutBotty.
The colours in the renders aren't the 100% representation of the anodised colours.

Please Fill out the IC form, As this information will greatly affect this project <3 Thank you:

Things to do : Typing Test, Vendors

Big thanks to SmollChungus, He has been a great help during this project.
He has helped me greatly when it comes with PCB related issues. If you need PCB work. id suggest SmollChungus <3

nice project and concept. only thing of note to me is the stab cutouts for the plate, there arent any wire cuts or clearance cuts like you usually see on plates like the jane v2 plate for example.  is there a reason for that or did you find it wasn't necessary?

The stab cut outs clearance are perfectly fine on all the plates I have tested, so far ive tested Tx stabs, durock stabs and cherry. none of them had any issues

I love frltkl’s. Really cool weight design and overall very simplistic, I dig. GLWIC  :thumb:

So, how would a half plate and hotswap pcb work? AFAIK those sockets don't really grip the switches with a ton of force, I'd be a bit worried about the switches falling out
If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is

Half Plate is best suited for Soldered PCB and not for Hotswap pcb at all. Half Plate is really an option for people who would like a bit of bounce near the alphas region when typing with a soldered PCB. I would try my best to inform people before buying the keyboard about Hotswap and Half Plates :)

Yes, I agree, if they're both an option it would be best to either have a very visible disclaimer about it or just not allow the purchase of a hotswap PCB/half plate configuration for a full board.
