A quick pic of my Poker II as it stands now.

Nice! The red space looks surprisingly good. Red alucase would look good in this.

I'm wanting to get an alucase at some point.

Nice work. Damn I bought mecklube 2 for the same reason. I thought it was a good lube for it. I'm disappointed :'(.

How was your first desoldering operation? Was it hard to do?

I did some desoldering before, so I already had the right tools, but the work on the keyboard itself was pretty intensive since I got a board with LEDs and so I had to desolder them first. LEDs are heat sensitive and so I was worried about damaging them, but it all turned out fine.

Conclusion: I really like the Ergo Clears, but I hope that someday there would be a switch with the same characteristics directly from a manufacturer, to save me some labor.

If you went on desoldering all the LED, you could have SIP socket them as well.

I heard that Greetech Browns (like the ones on the Das 4C) are more tactile than MX Browns.

Never heard of Greetech. What does more tactile mean? More tactile like Clear or something in between browns and clear?

AFAIK, the 4C currently is the only keyboard with Greetech switches.

So in a recent Massdrop I finally took the plunge and bought a keyboard I have wanted in my collection for a long time, a KBC Poker II.

The particular variant going was a white one with MX Clear switches which isn't really to my liking, but the time was right, the price was right so I bought it anyway. It arrived this week and as soon as I picked it up yesterday I set about modding it. Instead of buying new key caps right away I decided to try an experiment instead. So I ran out and bought 2 cans of Plasti-Dip. One in red for the keycaps and one in anthracite for the case. I have been wanting to try Plasti-Dip on something for a while and figured this was a good enough excuse to do it.

So I set about pulling the keyboard apart and used double sided tape to stick the keys down on some cardboard. I also tried this with the case, but realised I would be missing the top lip of the case that way so I made a little X bipod out of cardboard to suspend it up in the air a bit so I could spray all the surfaces needed (Not pictured, sorry). I made sure to put some tape over the threaded screw holes inside the case however so that they didn't get all filled up.

For my thoughts and observations on the process. I am very happy with how the colours of the keyboard came out now that it's all together, but as you can see in some of the last pictures, the edges on the bottoms of the keycaps isn't all that great after being pulled from the cardboard. In the future I would get a bunch of switch stems and glue them to a wooden board to allow the bottom edges of the keycaps to remain suspended in the air, I would also space them out more so it's easier to get the needed coverage per keycap without adjacent ones blocking the spray.
Another thing I was really curious about was how Plasti-Dip would feel on the keycaps while typing. It has a sort of rubbery feeling that is quite grippy, very different to plain keycaps. Also, with all this Plasti-Dip on them the keycaps are really quiet now, they almost seem to reduce the sound of the rebound on the key after hitting it, one of the shortcomings of O-rings. I have a couple of sample O-rings in a box somewhere, I might have to get them out and see how it sounds with reduced compression and rebound noise. :D

Future Plans - I would like to do either Ergo Clear modded switches or convert them to blues. I'm also probably going to pick up a low profile aluminium case for it.

I have no idea honestly. I've never used Plasti-Dip before and have been wanting to try it. This is really just a big experiment for me haha. I'm using it as my daily driver at work so it should see some good use and I'll try remember to report back in a couple of months on how it's holding up.

I've heard that plasti-dip does not stand up well to the oils in your skin. Most people say that after a week it begins to wear off. Hopefully it works well for you.

Ah, bummer. Ohwell, I'll see how it goes. I did wonder how it would stand to oils.

Looks great, what is the blue Bro? It looks like a faded Essence of Kirkle.

Not for now. I haven't known what I should do with keycaps and so got white and black blanks from WASD for cheap. They're good set for the time when I get good idea for the right keycap set. I know only that, that Toxic set would be cool.

Nice.  And ISO. :thumb: Would want some doubleshot keycaps. :-X Toxic set, please appear on my desk. Maybe Bumblebee would be worth considering. This blank black set is cool but backspace has minor shine. Maybe because drunk friends touched it with dirty hands, and backspace was most used key for a reason. :))

EDIT: I saw Toxic set on TechKeys.  Had to order it. :-X There's was no ISO set but going to catch it later somewhere. :'(

People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.
