as a bit of a newbie to this whole hobby, is it a good thing to invest in this GB having someone else like Prof build it, while randomly aquiring all the parts needed for a full keyboard??

and while I know not everything I need is in this GB I'm assuming there will be follow ups with cases etc etc??

(sorry if this has already been asked, but I'm super curious and would love to try a properly programmable board :) )

oh right, I didn't realise that lol (sorry miss-read your thread)... ok so I guess I have to place an order now! ^^

When you have prices up etc on your thread I'll have a better idea when I can afford/justify getting it all put together :)

I've updated everything in post 2. I've also created a limited spreadsheet on google, it everyone's order info (Username, #PCBs, #controllers, and if its shipping to someone other than you) except private details like shipping info/emails:

http://goo.gl/6Z2Aa

Please use this to confirm that everything is correct. If not shoot me a PM and we'll fix it.

not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask but if lets say i were to acquire one of these kits and this was my first time building would i be out of my mind or is this project just right?

I do know how to solder as i took some robotics clubs when i was young, and i make some repairs here and there to wires, though i've never made solders this small. i've never soldered diodes. i have not much experience de-soldering and i need to buy some new tools.

if this isn't appropriate to talk here if anyone is kind enough to PM me i would be grateful.

You can get a practice circuit board and cheap resistors/diodes at radio shack and practice on those first. Its not very hard at all, but will take some practice.

Something like this works great for desoldering switches:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062745

You can get desoldering braid for the finer stuff.

Installing the Teensy is the trickiest part. That's how I killed my Phantom PCB, and why I really wanted this Round 2 to get off the ground. The diodes are simply tedious, not difficult. The switches are probably the easiest part.

The Phantom Instruction Guide can be found here: http://deskthority.net/wiki/Phantom_instruction_guide

Just follow the instructions very carefully. I got careless, and paid the price.

But, as bavman said, you may want to buy a small project kit to practice with first.

I may end up sending one or more of mine to TheProfosist/WhiteFireDragon for assembly. I just don't have the time to be building keyboards, especially since I want to do one in 65g vintage blacks, lubed and stickered. I'm thinking 55g reds for another.

You know you need both. A TKL and a 60%. This GB will be done collecting payments about the time the GH60 GB opens, I would bet.

I already have a TKL, an SSK. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting rid of my poker once the GH60 is done and I'm also thinking of giving my mom my WASD. I don't need 100 keyboards like most of you guys, I just want 3 solid boards and I'd be happy.

Could someone care to explain the difference between a custom phantom vs a normal TKL with modded switches. This was the question my commanding officer at home was asking when she knew i am buying a new board. :D

Tell your CO that the difference is that the Phantom has customizable layouts, for instance ANSI 87-key, ANSI 86-key with 1.50 mods, ISO 88-key, ISO 87-key 1.50, etc. Also, the firmware is programmable, so you can have different layers, etc. You can have keys around the cursor arrows, below the "six pack," and you can have a full function row with no gaps.

Damnit... I didn't consider ISO layout. I've never had one, I think an ISO tsangan layout would be sweet. That will fit in a standard plastic filco case, right?

Ugh so now I'm considering two boards, one iso with 1.5 mods and one ANSI with 1.5 mods.

My GH60 will be iso hhkb layout...maybe a second of those too.

Too much money on custom boards and no money spent on custom cases! Arg

Problem exists that custom cases are annoying to design when you don't have the same version of CAD.

That's why I always save in an older version of AutoCAD/Solidworks/Inventor. 2004 for AutoCAD and 2008 for Solidworks. It makes life much simpler when sending files to other people who may not have the most up to date version of the program

I will be offering WFD's plate design in my GB once the designs are complete and I have pricing. Also just to clarify plates and all other parts can be bought from my GB separately from the assembly services. http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=38471.0

Apologies for the cross-post, but I realized that the Klaxon add-on keycaps I am doing an [IC} for right now might also help Phantom buyers who like Klaxon and are planning some non-standard keys.

Apologies for the cross-post, but I realized that the Klaxon add-on keycaps I am doing an [IC} for right now might also help Phantom buyers who like Klaxon and are planning some non-standard keys.

[IC] Klaxon Mods for KBT Race & Poker Keyboards -- Plus Phantom

Here is a mock-up:

Phantom mock-up with Klaxon, Red & White specials plus three matching Media Keys.

I won't cross-post here again, but I struck me that there might be other Phantom-builders besides me who like Klaxon colors.

wait....is a layout like this really possible with the phantom? cause that would be really awesome...
yes but that not the optimal layout in my eyes at all.

what would be your optimal layout?

An IC is up for plates so we can decide material and get an idea on quantities for pricing:
