reading all this, i think i might have really intelligent and open-minded colleagues. nobody ever asked how i could type on my blank multi-coloured keys. nobody ever asked "why" or "how much" or called my keyboard ridiculous. or came up with "but logitech...".

It's probably because you're in Russia, and things are not as accessible there as they are in the U.S.  So they can assume you know what you're doing if you have something out of the ordinary.

(i could swear we already had a thread like this)

I work 95% from home so i don't get daily comments exception from my wife and best friend. I do share my collection on Facebook and get mostly silence.

<insert forever alone meme>

My keyboard collection though is not a secret to my coworkers in another state. Every time i have visited the main office in the last year i have brought a new keyboard. By the 3rd visit, people started to realize i may have an obsession with keyboards.

visits 1 and 5: comments on the HHKB
"where are all the keys?"
"what does the skull [clack] mean?"
"Is that a hacking keyboard?" (a "holy ****" moment for me)
"this one is so much quieter than those other ones"

visit 2: comments on the RACE with White switches
*tries out keyboard* - "how could anyone like how that feels?"
"what does mechanical keyboard mean?"
"why is it so loud"
*asks how much it costs* - "why would you spend so much money?"

visits 3 and 4: comments on the poker stock and then next visit with klaxon key caps and pure aluminium case
"what makes that keyboard so special?"
"why cant you just use the keyboard on your laptop?"
"love that keyboard Phil"
"How many keyboards do you own?"
"where can i get those key caps?" "I don't know what mechanical means"

visit 6: comments on the ergodox (acrylic, clear, DSA/DCS cap Mix, kinesis lift for tent)
"what the hell"
"why is it split like that?"
"is that even ergonomic"
"how can you type on that thing?"
"why is it clear?"
"that thing is ugly"
"another keyboard Phil? I think you have a problem"
"will you just pick a keyboard and stick with it!"

i absolutely prefer scissor switch boards (even apple, though im not a big fan of the flat keys) to lubed ergo clears. those  feel really mushy to me.

Wouldn't that be a function of which springs were used?  "ergo-Clears" is a pretty wide range of springs: 55g, 60g, 62g, 65g.  They all feel different.  (I know because I tested all of those)

no it was specifically the lubrication on the contact point of the stem that did it, i'm pretty sure. i've had both ergo clear and lubed ergo clear using springs from MX blue switches (before all those fancy pants korean springs were on the market we used to have to cannibalize old MX switches).

When I worked in an office, the first question was "How do you type without letters on the keyboard?".  This was during my blank PBT phase.

After that question was answered, my coworkers loved that I changed keycaps/keyboards once or twice a week.  Man, if only they knew of the collection I have now!

I've got front-printed caps on my Filco as of a few days ago.  My OH just noticed them today, walking into the room, he exclaimed "Are those blank!!!?"  I had to calm him down and tilt the keyboard to show him that there are still letters on the caps.

It may be a culture thing as well.  I tend to assume all work norms are like US/Canadian offices.  Being inquisitive, offering comments/suggestions/criticism is fairly usual here.  In other countries, if people see an unusual keyboard on someone's desk, they may not ask any questions, so as not to seem ignorant.  Perhaps it's a specialist's keyboard, like the guy at my old company that was our solo NeXT programmer.  Or a luxury keyboard, only available to people with connections.

Just sayin'.

most comments i get here are "cool! so many colors!" and "i know it's a mechanical keyboard. how does it work?". one colleague used to come close, look at my unicomp and say "it's awesome!". he had been doing so for two weeks!

yup, i had to save for a year to get this unicomp.

-- "Why are people on your keyboard website getting so worked up about racism?  Do those people really care about the love/hate of skin color in a place that openly worships rainbow colored keys?"

I tried to explain we were a diverse bunch who only like keyboards and that we still understand/associate with humanity.

The response,

I walked away.

I keep my Filco at work and everything else at home. Most people dont even notice my board, much less know the value and want to try and steal it.

I've received nothing but positive feedback from co-workers whenever I bring in a different keyboard to type on at work. Most of them don't notice that I have an "unusual" keyboard unless it has colorful keycaps or they sit down to type on it. Either way, all responses have been pleasant thus far.

I gave away my TG3-TP to a  friend/co-worker who is a former police officer. He really liked it, especially the backlighting. He plans to use it in his media room/basement. In addition, another co-worker liked the layout and feel of my G84-4100 so we had the manager buy her one for $16.

-- "Why are people on your keyboard website getting so worked up about racism?  Do those people really care about the love/hate of skin color in a place that openly worships rainbow colored keys?"

He's absolutely right about that part. Political/religious arguments on a keyboard forum do nothing but plague it. There are thousands of forums on the internet where such topics are not only freely discussed, but also encouraged.

I loaned one of my co-workers my Noppoo Choc Mini, with MX Browns.  He really liked it, I wasn't using it, so I let him use it for as long as he liked.  Now he's purchased a Ducky Shine 2 - 78 version, so the Choc Mini is going back on the shelf for the next convert.

Nice!  If only it were that easy with my OH.

Well the cleaning lady about fell over the day she came in and picked up my keyboard to put a small piece of paper to 'test' her workers to see how well they were cleaning when I mentioned that they keyboard costs almost $150 and the keycaps added another $80 on top of it.

Needless to say they don't touch my desk anymore.

Wow, I hope your cleaning staff is trustworthy. I don't think I'd mention what my stuff is worth. Touch of paranoia, maybe.

I don't take my board home from work, but we are in a relatively secure area and like I said, I don't talk about the value.

After the last cleaning people were caught stealing, I have camera's recording them now. And we started using key cards for access.

And we expended an existing cleaning group from another location that has been trustworthy for over 5 years now.

I've finally gotten my friends and other half to appreciate my keyboards.  They mostly love the full-sized white LED Ducky Shine II (as it looks more standard), but my OH loves showing off my painted cases now and likes my Nyan Cat set :)  Though he says I'm crazy to have it, because there are no numbers of symbols on those caps.

May even have a friend who would like me to get him his first mechanical keyboard :)
