And that was my problem.  I loved the non-lethal route in Splinter Cell and it really screwed me in the boss fights in Human Revolution, especially since many of the boss fights required you to kill them in scripted ways that were difficult to accomplish unless you went the lethal route.

I've worked for my dad for just over 4 years now (officially, but grew up in the shop), as an apprentice mechanic, and we specialize in VW/Audi.  I have a degree in electrical engineering, and combine it all to be a local expert in automotive electronics (I do module repairs for other shops, etc).  My dad opened up shop 40 years ago at the ripe old age of 24, and is incredibly knowledgeable about older stuff (I overtake him on newer stuff).  I grew up in the business, and am 31 now, but I somehow don't feel ready to take the reins (my dad will be 64 this year, and his knees are shot).  I get consistently 100% in my mechanic schooling (doing 3rd year now), but I don't feel experienced enough to fill the huge void he would leave.  If I had not gone to university and started at the shop earlier, I may have felt ready, but I don't regret at all having the skills that I have in the electronics field.

A guy I've known for a few years runs another specialty shop near us, but wants to get out from under the actual owner.  He wants to buy my dad's business with me, but I don't feel like I have what it takes to handle the responsibility.  Am I crazy?

This is a huge commitment on multiple levels, not the least of which is your father's legacy. You can't help but feel some kind of responsibility to carry that on. But your situation is much different than your father's was. He was 24, not 31. That means he was still invincible and ready to take on the world. You're old enough to know better. And you're not starting with nothing. I don't envy you, the weight that you must feel on your shoulders right now.

That said, it sounds like you are totally prepared in regard to training and experience. The one thing you don't have experience with is shouldering all that responsibility. But the way I see it, this can go one of two ways. You can commit to working hard at this and either have something to show for it, or if something happens beyond your control the business could fold but it won't have been your fault and you can move on with no regrets. The other option is to turn this down and spend the rest of your career (whatever you choose to do) wondering what would have happened if you took the chance.

BTW, I'm 34 years old. I started my first business when I was 23 and it failed miserably because I didn't apply myself or try hard enough. I thought I was entitled to success. Nowadays I've got a pretty successful side business in addition to my part-time salary position in IT support. I have absolutely no regrets, even though I failed and it was my fault, because I took the chance and learned a lot of hard lessons about life, work, and my own nature that I would have had to learn sooner or later.
