I think the Taiwanese just like color.   There is LITTLE relationship to switch feel.

From my (blessedly) limited experience with Alps switches, there is a simple relationship: Virgin-ass white ones feel nice. As soon as pigment comes into play, they feel like sandpaper. (But that's probably only because I haven't seen simplified white ones yet.)

Meltie,

I didn't bid in the last two auctions only in order to stay out of your way. You lost both, at rather low prices, at prices I would have gladly payed. Last time you announced here you were bidding "an insane amount". Iirc, it turned out that insane amount was the same that had already lost you the auction before. Frankly, I was pretty pissed.

I'm all for playing nice here and not outbidding fellow Geekhackers. But you can't expect me to watch board after board go to strangers until you may finally get one as cheap as you'd like.

I was just joking and didn't mean to attack you in any way. I should have put a smily behind my post, since it was only meant as a reference to previous exchange we had in this thread about this specific board, and didn't know that you were actually angry with me about the way the auctions before went.

I think it is very nice of you - and others - to stay out of the auctions other people announced they would go for. I wouldn't usually expect this from others who are interested in the same items, and a part of me is even surprised you really did. So thank you for that, even if I haven't won.

I didn't consider the prices for the other boards low, especially considering my budget. I am sorry if staying out of these auctions led you to not buying keyboards you otherwise would have. Since we obviously have a different opinion on what a high bid on a board like this is, I'd say from now on we both try and see who gets them in the end - probably you :-)

I really don't want to constrict somebody who might have a different opinion on prices and a higher budget than me. Like it seems to have happend in this case, we can only lose both. I'd really like to have one of these keyboards, but not as badly that I want to risk bad blood with one of my fellow geekhackers.

There was a MX-3000M (older G80-3000 with either clear or blue MX switches, if I understand correctly) on eBay this week that got only one bid, the initial price of 1 €.
The auction was listed for Germany only/money order, but I had asked the seller and got an OK for Sweden/PayPal. I have done this a few times on eBay to get stuff from the US or Germany without any problems.
When I did eventually bid, though, within the last ten minutes, eBay blocked my bid because I did not have any address in Germany ... WTF!
Do sellers have to do anything special on eBay these days to allow "International" buyers?

It looks like if an auction is set strictly to not ship outside of a country, eBay will check for your registered account address. I had the same thing happen with something listed in Spain, for Spain only.

Yeah, if a listing is set only to go to certain destinations, it will refuse to let you bid or BIN. Recently ran into this with a 99 cent bid item, talked to seller and he agreed to ship to Canada (from USA) but didn't update the listing at the same time so it rejected my bid.

He made the change and it let me bid.

Little did I know, it was a tape drive controller card instead of a floppy drive controller card :(

Floppy drive controller cards... very hard to find one that isn't an 8 bit ISA one for an XT. Which is problematic given that motherboards are slowly dropping floppy support.

Funny you should say that, since that's what I was trying to buy.

8-bit ISA with a BIOS extension ROM supporting high density drives are very hard to find at any kind of reasonable cost.

Normally it will stop you from bidding on an item which is not set to ship to your address.
I have found such listings and asked the seller to do something about it. Ebay actually has support for odd cases like these and allows the seller to add certain buyers to an "exclude from shipping-check" list. The seller might have extra conditions though, like not accepting any offers and pointing you to the Buy It Now price instead.

Did anybody here get this one? Seller insists it's a G80-3000HGD (I asked twice), but I've never heard of G type switches. Wasn't willing to pay much for another beaten up Cherry only to solve that riddle though.

Quote from: sixty;168368
I believe I had a HGD board before and it was black MX. I could be wrong though, I have gone through way too many G80s.

If all goes well, we'll see soon enough. There has to be some difference to warrant using a different letter. I hope it's something more than just a different cable or somesuch.

Looking forward to see what you get. I actually got a G81-3000 with a proper G80 inside. The FCC id and model number also match a G80. Cherry can not be trusted either.

That's a G81-3000 which is missing its label. These old ones are better built than the current ones, with proper ribbon cable connectors. Hard to see whether it's a HAD or SAD, might be worth having for keycaps either way.

That's one fancy lasered label.

also boring but interesting color:

Kinda looks like a Unicomp in black/metallic design.

"Boring" is a pretty accurate description for the current offers on the 'bay, btw. I guess everyone is watching the two explicitly "clicky" boards, too (one FK2001 with roof and a Monterey K-104).

Rrrrubbbbber.

The G86-boards are not worth the shipping costs. I tried a G86 once and went straight to the G80-3000 I'm currently typing on. The keycaps are too large, which causes a lot of typos. You will more often hit 2 keys at once.

The only pro is that they are beer-spill resistant ;-)

Go for the G80-1502 instead.

Basically the same thing as a G80-2100 with a fancy LED display and 9 layers to program. The MY switches instantly make these boards a no go for me though. Ironically the extra switches use black MX switches instead of MY switches:

Got my G80-3000HGD today. It's a bog standard G80-3000 with blacks (of 1995 vintage in this case), so sixty was right. This one's somewhat yellowed, but it wasn't too dirty.

Here's one of those black ESCOMs that look almost like a Fujitsu Peerless but in fact are a plain rubber dome. Lettering seems to be pad printed, as it's partly worn off. With some better internals modded in, this could be quite nice.
Looks like a yellowed G81-1000SAD. You don't see 1000 series boards so often.
Some Mtek/Monterey? Could be one of their later semi-mechanicals, not sure. I wonder what the seller considers dirty if that's supposed to be cleaned.

Here's a rebranded Qtronix Scorpius 32 numpad in what appears to be extra big print - the guy only accepts Paypal and cash on pickup, otherwise I'd have considered buying it.

G80-1501HADs are interesting per se, NKRO and integrated LEDs, PBT doubleshots and all, but that kind of price is too rich for my blood. Not for a board with blacks. In order to be of practical use, it would have to be modded first.

I would have taken both if I had known that they are US-layout as in the (kbdmania) picture. A normal Cherry G80-3000 NIB costs 63 EUR plus shipping. So the price would have been OK.

THERE ARE NO G80-150x series boards in US LAYOUT.

I contacted Cherry about this before, they do not exist. The one on the pic is from a mod. So don't feel bad about missing out.

As to be expected for boards designed to read German health insurance cards, actually. A model with a HAD suffix would definitely come in German layout, too.

Much interesting threads, but there are two major problems.

1) Most of the keyboards are German layout.

2) Nearly all the listings only Ship Deutschland.
