Let's put it this way: is the price so high because they are extremely good keyboards, or simply because they are rare?

They're rare, mainly. That, and they are split-ergo 'boards (and fairly adjustable at that) which are hard to find with mechanical switches (see: Model M15).

The auction has ended early, maybe the buyer agreed on the 580€ price after all...

Ah, he deleted all bids. Very dangerous for the seller because the highest bidder is the official winner of the auction. He might get everything for Euro 3.50 if he knows his rights.

This is one of the few reasons why it makes sense to be the high bidder when the price is still low.

People sure like those ergonomic keyboards. I've never used them. Is it like about as much step up from the Model M as using a Model M is compared to using a white Apple keyboard?

Personally, I like the hand spacing and the wrist positioning.  It also helps me type better and faster since you can't "cross-type."  All things being equal, I like the split layout better, but there is a dearth of mechanical ergo 'boards which makes these things so expensive.

New old stock G81-3000:

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160373720219&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Note that the seller listed this as G81-3000HAU which is NOT the case. I got one today and they are the lasered model, not the double shot one. However, still a pretty good deal. He will accept offers around the 12 Euro area.

Boards are really brand new in box and on request he will pack it in another box or proper packaging paper to not ruin the box.

These G81s are made in 1997 and still use the old style stabilizers and keycap sets. They are 100% compatible to G80s or some Filco models (minus bottom row, capslock). So if you are after some clean, bi-color laser keys this might be a source.

And yes: I posted the URL just after I had bought and received one of the three instead of instantly when finding it because [strike]i planned on massive profit reselling these if it really was the HAU model[/strike] to save you guys from not getting the actual HAU model.

Same seller, great deal:

New old stock G84-4100 (ANSI Layout?): 25 Euro buy it now, accepts offers:
http://cgi.ebay.de/Cherry-Keyboard-SlimLine-G84-4100-UK-Version_W0QQitemZ160373718870QQcmdZViewItemQQptZM%C3%A4use_Tastaturen?hash=item255704bf56#ht_895wt_1166

This is about 1/3 of the retail price or less and half of the usual eBay price. Great deal.

That is a lot better than the Dells.  Unfortunately, the white on black doesn't look quite as good.  I think the white paint/plastic/whatever makes it look a little sloppy.

I hate any Dell keyboard manufactured since about 2000. Why? Because they're utter CRAP! Their keys get stuck, the letters wear off them, they're just awful.

There are currently two Cherry G80-5000s to be had. Both offers include a 5700 numpad.

Link 2

Link 1 went for Euro 111,-. Much less than the initial 406,-.

Still quite much, but 111 seems a lot more reasonable.
Here's the other one again: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140357692462. He decided not to ship to Nigeria anymore, though. :)

Awesome. Anyway, never seen a board like that before but I doubt its actually a Cherry.

The only other boards I have seen with the indicator LEDs that high up are Gateways. Maybe this one came out of the same factory.

D'oh... I forgot to bid on a board again.
This Qtronix 32-key numpad promptly went without a bid.
As did, incidentally, this splendidly-described "keyboard" (apparently a 1000 series Cherry, I'd say G81 but not sure).

Also run out without any bids: This Siemens, apparently KBPC EM or similar.

This old XT(?) board is still running though.

Funny things going on on the 'bay. People are fighting for a virtually NIB G81-3000SAD - yours truly snatched one up as on OEM for 1€ half a year ago.

Here's a US layout 1000 series Cherry (less than a day to go)
Seems like we're almost drowning in Marquardt ergos:
Here's one...
...and there's another

And JFTR, this is what a Qtronix Scorpius 104 looks like - these rubber domes with distinctive styling from about 1997 appear on the 'bay once in a while. A while back I had been wondering what model this was, and whether it was mechanical. (Too bad they are not, the design is quite nice.)

I have to say they look quite stylish, very different from the usual rectangle. If you painted the case they'd be even more of an objet d'art.

I'm not perfectly sure, but apart from the logo, the case looks exactly like a g80-1000.

I just re-read the articles on cherry history. It seems like the
g81 shared the same case with the g80, so it doesn't neccessarily need
to have MX switches.  The article also mentions key incompatibilties:

,----[ http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Dating+Cherry+keyboards#Parts+interchangeability ]
| Keycap compatibility between G80 and G81 is limited:
|
| The old 102-key sets appear to be pretty much
| interchangeable. However, it may happen that the original caps
| click into place in a way that G81 ones won't, in return the G80
| ones will be pretty tight - possibly they "get used to" their
| switches over time.  The G81s with new-style 3000 case (ca. 1998
| onwards) introduced a number of changes, especially with the
| stabilized keys, but also the others on the bottom row (which are
| in part attached off-center while that is not the case on a G80,
| at least a Czech-made one).
|
| Cases
|
| In general, cases have always been the same in G80 and G81 models from the same factory. In particular, they should be interchangeable between:
| * G80-1000 and G81-1000
| * 101/102-key G80-3000, G81-3000 (old-style case) and G83-3000
| * 104/105-key G80-3000 (old-style case or Czech-made) and G81-3000 (old-style case until ~1997)
| * 104/105-key G80-3000 (new-style case from German factory) and G81-3000 (new-style case)
`----

Keys should be quite interchangeable between 1000 series and old-style 3000 series boards, G80 and G81.

And yes, it's not that hard to recognize OEM Cherry boards on a reasonable-quality pic.

Some more stuff:

G81-7000 POS board
Old G81-3019HAD (two-shot keycaps)
Toshiba branded ALPS LCM board made in Ireland (I guess it's too new to be mechanical, but sort of a rare bird)

Incidentally, while I can understand why one may want to have a US layout (usually for programming purposes), I find that a regular German layout with some additions works quite well. I wouldn't want to miss those though, especially [] on AltGr+ÖÄ and \/ on AltGR+.-.

Yep, the cover is a giveaway. Think I'll give it a try. In thumbnail view this looks like a severely yellowed board while it's just the cover.

Hmm, I think I've seen other such boards (sans cover) before but usually thought they weren't anything special.

I don't think so, this is a 3rd party controller by GMK.

There is a mod in the keyboard links wiki where a G80-5000 is converted from ISO to ANSI.

Moving a switch on a pcb is not easy as it requires a couple of precise drills. Esp. for the register pins or the switch may rotate.

The interesting part was in the questions to the seller:
Quote
MFG/

Says that the keyboard was stored in an advertising cabinet in a store (now out of business). It was just removed when needed. Seller says it contains the original box, manual and all cables and papers.

Black Cherry G80-3000 LPMDE, currently at €1,50 + shipping:

http://search.ebay.de/330385696226

The seller lists it as "clicky" (blue stems). But on the other hand the part number suggests it's the linear version (black stems), so double check before bidding.

They type at work just like they do at home on their crappy rubber domes.  It's like trying to get a Boone's Farm drinker to appreciate Dom Perignon.  They'll just slam it down and be naked in 15 minutes.

The keys look awesome, sixty. Now I'm even more jealous that I didn't get it. :second:
Good for you though.

Watching tellers at grocery stores it looks like most POS registers use something like this switch.  They just bottom out everything - probably trained to just whack the key for accuracy.

I feel less bad now that I'm not the only one who checks out the checkout's computer keyboards. I've even found Model M's at grocery store checkouts before!
