[GB] Doro67 - Integrated 4mm Plate 65% Keyboard (~80% shipped)
« on: Fri, 07 September 2018, 10:33:24 »
Is building a customized keyboard science or art? Can we design a keyboard that is based on the precision of science for perfect utility, and the good principles of art for ideal aesthetics?

Meet Doro67.

After rapidly testing 2 prototypes, we now proudly announce the Groupbuy for Doro67. 80ultraman, the designer of the BackProp Studio, takes this endeavor to heart, finetuning everything in this board hundreds of times to his standard of perfection. The making of Doro67 is the best case of practicing keyboard science, as every fine detail in the design has a scientific reasoning behind it. For example, the integrated 4mm plate allows for consistent typing feedback; and the low-profile front-end design allows for effortless typing with as well as without a wristrest. What’s best, he has decided to offer multiple types of layouts for enthusiasts who like compatibility.

Compared with most customized keyboards on the market, Doro67's design allows cap profiles such as SA, MT3, and GMK to sit under the bezels, please see a side by side comparison of Doro67 with SA all R3 Rows with SKOG with GMK.

Doro67 has also benefited from the incorporation of feedback and ideas from you, community members. We have taken suggestions from you seriously, discussing the feasibility, and implementing as they add value to the project. Since we have released tons of details for the design concepts, prototypes, and early renders in the Geekhack Interest Check Page, here we will go directly to the details of this group buy.

Hi everyone, 80 here,

9.25 UPDATE: Payment Collected, Deposit Paid to ALF

You can check the orders here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Gvtz7gh2hRnw0u1vduaLifWRRc_tG3sOpt0f2FL6FFo/edit?usp=sharing

Thanks for the feedback! Very helpful!!

I will declare some less-important details and compromises here, you can skip this if you are not interested.

Check more pics here: https://imgur.com/a/r8NgDcN

Size: 335 × 127 × 33mm

Weight: 1.4kg / 3.1lb default alu case including PCB, switches and SA caps.

front height: 17mm (switches sit 2mm lower)

I put a lot effort to lower the overall height of this keyboard, make it lower than most custom and mass production keyboards. You can see from the picture, Doro with SA caps has the same height as Skog with GMK. I think this will give you a better experience if you prefer high-profile caps.

Layouts
I know a lot of you guys hate those "compatible plates", which full of holes make switches unstable. It is also important to me, I wanna the plate has a minimal cutout, make it clean and steady. As other layouts, since this is an integrated plate keyboard, fully customization will probably end up 10+ different version of the top case. That is not affordable. So, we decide to provide 4 top case versions.I realize this can't make everyone happy, but it is the best we can do.

PCB
After receiving some request for back-lighting, I added an in-switch RGB PCB cost extra $15. The RGB version only supports default layout. You can only choose Multi-compatible PCB if you prefer other layouts. All the switches of both PCBs are south-facing (led at the bottom). Both boards work with PCB mount-stabs (regular or screw).

Logo option:

The bottom IC shows that quite a few like the logo but seem to hate the text. I think it's weird simply remove the text. I decide to keep the logo as a default, if you hate it so much you can choose to not have it.

Box
The keyboard will come with a box. Here's a leak:

Rubber feet
The rubber feet will change to following in the final product. I will give some extra both black and grey.

Tolerance
The tolerance between caps and the top case will be smaller in the final product.

No, it's nothing like that. It's a metallic blue. You can scroll up and look at the samples for an idea. It's the middle pic in the colors.

Yes, 2.75 / 1.25 / 2.25. I think this makes more sense.

Integrate Plate Layout Options:

Show Image

I was planning on buying additional option for split backspace, however now when I look at your layout options it seems that split backspace is not actually two separate 1U holes, but instead something that seems to be derivative design from the default ANSI (just one giant 2U hole).

I'm not saying thid is necessarily a bad thing, it surely is cheaper to produce and thus available to a broader audiance, but I don't like having an open hole on the keyboard inbetween two switches for dust, dirt and maybe even liquid to come inside keyboard.

So, I wonder is there some kind of option where can I have just two 1U holes instead of default backspace, and if the answer is no, I'm just going to order regular ANSI.

Shouldn't be a problem for plate this thick.   Zephyr also has "one giant 2U hole".    Wouldnt make any difference if you spill beer on your keeb.

Sorry, the plate is integrated. I talk a big time to have 4 different cutouts. Like I said, this can't make everyone happy. if you wanna something less universal, you gonna take some extra holes on the plate.

I made a prototype PCB before and fully tested but not matte black gold mask. RGB PCB will be made by my friend (a QMK contributor), so I don't think needs to have another PCB prototype.
