[IC] GMK Eclipse
« on: Tue, 19 February 2019, 13:10:29 »
Hello geekhackers,

as i mentioned in previous ICs of mine i will rerun Eclipse one day. So here it is. GMK Eclipse will drop in the near future on Massdrop. The colors didn't changed and are still the same as in the first IC. The colors are: light blue from GMK Yuri, a mid blue custom color close to RAL 5000 and of course the standard GMK color N9 which is really nice dark gray in my opinion. I still have to match the mid blue like i envisioned it.

Base kit

Numpad

40 Percent

Accents & Novelties

Spacebars

So if you are interested in GMK Eclipse and you have some constructive feedback then please reply below. Thanks ;)

Can't wait! Went in on the first GB and was disappointed that it never made MOQ.  Hopefully being on MD will give it the necessary exposure.

Great stuff as always t0m!

Can we have ISO (just 4 keys). What´s the struggle with ISO? Are you talking about norde sets (which i use, but theyre always overpriced so dont even like norde kits).
Im sure if you made separate kits for stuff like 1.5u super, meta or 2u 0, they would struggle.

If you feel the need to trim fat, just remove stuff like 1.5u super, meta or 2u 0.

Glad to see this set make a comeback, I was sad when it didn't make it the first time. A shame the accent/novelty keys proposed the first time around don't seem to be returning though, they were one of the best parts of the set.

I am sorry but this not what i want to do. I would add ISO only to flashy/popular keysets like Carbon but in this one i want lowest price as possible.

There will be an extra kit with accent keys, smaller spacebars and the moon novelty. ;)

Beautiful looking set, I'm very interested! How different are the colors from Space Cadet?

Space Cadet has a gorgeous blue color. Eclipse has an mid tone off blue color. Its little bit 'milky' i would say and has very small purple tonality. Just look up for RAL 5000 color.

This looks like it would be a great kit on its own, or paired with the GMK White on Black kit. Grey alphas and black mods for me!
But this is awesome and I'll likely buy it. Count me interested.

I was interested until I saw "no ISO". That was that.

It doesn't even have to be "UK ISO" or whatever. Four keys is all that's needed to do ISO support.  :(

Thus i am not including any ISO keys, because they always do struggle in very popular sets and in this one they don't have a slight chance to become reality.
Add the keys to the base kit and this problem is solved.

Looking at Jamón’s numbers so far shows how many people are interested in having the numpad kit attached to the base kit and also that a 40’s kit can hit MoQ. So my suggestion would be to make the numpad separate to help lower price and to offer a Jamón type 40s kit.

I second the call for a 40% kit. There are at least four 40% boards currently in GB, all needing to be covered by a beautiful keyset like this.

A lovely set, possibly interested.  Just curious, i'm in the UK and previous Massdrop buys have incurred the typically exorbitant import fee (about a 3rd of the cost of the item), BUT i see that you are in Germany.  Will you be shipping these from there or from Massdrop HQ in U.S?  Kind of a deciding factor me at least.  Thanks

Do you understand why Europeans don't want to buy stuff from massdrop? We have to pay 21%+13 euros here in The Netherlands for everything coming from outside of the EU. I believe it's 19%+6 euros in Germany. If something goes wrong, which kind of happens often with massdrop, they declare the full amount of the keyset on the package when they send a replacement so we can pay the tax on the entire order again. So a set really has to be worth it for us to get it from massdrop, otherwise we'll just wait until it hits mechmarket.

I joined this the first time it ran and was really sad to see it not reach MOQ, going with massdrop will certainly make it easier to reach but also guarantees extra fees for me (duties, shipping, etc.). Because of that I can't guarantee my participation atm. The 'purple' accent keys really made this set for me the first time I saw it, I'd like to see them make a return here!

R1 Del-End-PgDn seem to belong in the numpad kid as opposed to the base kit seeing as those are typically only used with 1800 layouts which naturally require a numpad. I didn’t follow the Jamón IC/GB so maybe they have a reason for including them, but to me they don’t seem to have a place in a base kit that’s designed for TKL and smaller only.

Edit: Digging the accents and novelties!

Well yes you are right actually. I will look into it.

Love the new updates, any possibility of all orange mod kit to cover for TKL and Numpad? Even if the price is high for small MOQ (say 50), I will pay, I am sure there are atleast 50 of orangephiles in community.
I ordered Beezarre kit in Carbon R2, would love to complete an all orange set.

It might be sufficient to keep just R1 DEL in the base set.  End and PgDn already have their respective default placement in 75% layouts - R4, R3.

If you are splitting the numpad based on decreasing popularity, conversely can you consider spreading novelty keys in their respective kits (base and 40)?  According to the current Jamon numbers, the main novelties number is at ~70% of the base set number.

This. And such mods would not match Beezarre anyway because the lables do have different colors (Carbon has gray and Eclipse has off blue labels).

I am personally not a huge fan of the orange color novelties. I liked the original IC's like scarlet/maroon red. I also liked the novelties from the original the pumpkins. I also suggest thought not sure if its possible or even advisable perhaps giving some thought to running this like they did Zambumon GMK Jamón. The kits seem to have done extremely well perhaps this could benefit from it also. I know it wouldn't please everyone but yea.

Orange with Blue is a classic pairing. So glad that Carbon orange alphas got picked up and plan to combine them with Space Cadet mods. A set of Orange mods, irrespective of legend colour will be cherry on top.

That's why i picked orange as accents for novelties. This is a classic combo. Also it makes the set little bit flashier which is a purpose of the novelties.

Of course tastes are different and if someone doesn't like orange accents there are still light blue accents available.

Update
I will finalize the kits until the end of this week (cuz it will drop soon™). So if you have a suggestion or you miss an important key then there is some time left to make a suggestion/request. Tho please keep in mind i am trying to achieve low pricings and its not possible to support exotic layouts.

Spacebar kit
- changed 6.25u and 7u spacebars to Yuri light blue color
- added 1.25u, 1.5u and 1.75u blank keys in two color variations.

Since no one asked, why is ISO support in the base kit? Barely anyone uses it, around 4-5% iirc. It should be in the 40s kit or something considering the point of the base kit is to have a lower entry price?

I've added only necessary ISO keys and i think this is the only chance for iso users to get a matching keyset. But placing those keys into 40s kit is definitely an alternative. I will think about it.

yeah personally i feel like the orange is a bit too harsh.  i'm thinking a pale orange might look better, similar to the light blue.

i had joined the original GB attempt, so it's nice to see this set make a comeback.

I am with both of you, kinda feels like a carbon reject key. I know its harsh but thats the first thing that came to mind. I do like the idea of a pale/muted orange thought that could look nice. I know when seen this set I think of fall tones.

The old accent colors were so great:

The carbonized orange look makes it a completely different set.
Would love to see a poll.

Wow. 3-colors novelty kit is so great. Love it.  :thumb:

I made following poll for accent and novelties kit. I will wait until tomorrow then i will make a decision depending on results.
VOTE HERE FOR ACCENTS AND NOVELTIES

Old Version

New Version

In case the old novelty version wins, then i will remove the accents from the base and numpad kits. In case the new version wins then i will make another 24h poll for the accent color. I can also include the pumpkin novelty into the new version.

I'm worried that the original accent kit might be too large. While I prefer the original colors, I think if it wins the poll, it might be worth considering trimming it down a bit. I don't really think the alternate color function row keys are necessary, and the variety of novelties could be cut down a bit. I think the moon keys are a must, in order to stay true to the theme of the set, but weren't the pumpkin novelties first introduced when the set was supposed to be run around Halloween? While they're neat, I don't think they really fit the eclipse/moon theme very well. That said, I'm not really against the pumpkin, just voicing my concerns on the size of the accent/novelty kit.

I think the burgundy is a must.

I know there’s some controversy over the pumpkin, but I can see it fitting in (harvest moon kinda makes it fit seasonally)

Haha, I don't think there's controversy over the pumpkin. My concern was with the size of the original accent kit. I don't remember it doing so well in relation to the number of base kits when the set first ran. I think it was a little pricey because of it's size. Im not out to get the pumpkin, I was just giving my two cents on how it fit in.

I think removing the F row keys and maybe dropping one of the accent colors could keep the costs in check?

Agreed, I was torn about options in the poll because the old accents kit seems a little large, but I don't really like the orange -- it's just a bit jarring with the thin blue letters.

I like the idea a few others mentioned of taking the old accent kit and cutting it down to maybe just two colours (love the burgundy and light blue the most!) and removing the F row at least.

Pumpkin was introduced first time because it was held around Halloween. But i think its ok to offer it in this round too, because its possible owners might get their set near Halloween.

Maybe if Eclipse gets really popular. However the mat would be not Carbon but Eclipse style.

Hmm now that the light blue accents have been moved into the accent kit. I was wondering if maybe the 6u off-center spacebar could be moved into the base kit, and maybe add 6u light blue spacebars to the spacebar kit? I'm not sure if that will make the Spacebar kit too large? Sorry, I'm a little biased towards the Yuri blue accents XD.

As i said previosly i will lock the kits once this week ends. What means the drop is not far away from happening. I can't tell you the date at the moment. Until then i will make changes only if there is an significant error.

I appreciate all the excitement people express here for the upcoming drop. Thanks for support ;) <3

I really liked the Orange accent kit. But well. Let's see what is left in the actual final set.

I like the orange accents too but as the poll shows people want more the old style accents. And indeed they do match the theme quite better than the orange accents. Anyway in case second round happens one day then i will include orange accents as well.

Hmm now that the light blue accents have been moved into the accent kit. I don't want to do it because the 6u spacebars are not as common and i want to keep the pricing low. Most 'common' layouts are using 6.25u or 7u spacebar.

Hey Tombs. Any chance of a 00 key as well? Might be a bit superfluous, but i've always liked to split numpad 0

Previously i've included this key in every base set or numpad kit. However i do not see those used and i decided to keep the 00 key out of the basic kits. Its more of an exotic key which belongs into some sort extra/exotic kit which i don't have in the current setup.

I know you already addressed a similar comment. But I also would like to se a 00 key. I agree that it is not fair to make everyone pay for this key in the base kit, but Now that more desiners are separating  the numpad into its own kit i think it would be nice to see this included. Also im not a ISO user but woudent mind if you threw the basics  ISO keys in with the numpad kit  like GMK minimalist. I know some are opposed to having this keys in base kits and I know they rearly make MOQ on there Own and Maybe this would help the numpad reach MOQ. I maybe asking some one to buy a key they may not need but i am willing to buy some keys that i dont need to help someone else get there layout. we are all in the same community.

Anyways i think this set looks really nice and look forward to it running.

ISO keys do not belong logically into numpad kit. Tho i already considered to move ISO keys into numpad... Anyway i've added 00 key to the numpad kit.

This keyset is about eclipse as astronomical event. However i don't mind if people refer it to the Eclipse IDE ;) I do appreciate your support  :thumb:

Hey t0mb3ry, why is it that we are seeing split numpad kits now? Isn't it less cost-effective for GMK? I've always preferred the single base kit sets. I'm not sure I feel positively about this new trend.

Hey t0mb3ry, why is it that we are seeing split numpad kits now? Isn't it less cost-effective for GMK? I've always preferred the single base kit sets. I'm not sure I feel positively about this new trend.

Its done to reduce the price for the base kit. Pricing is important for the success (there are also other aspects). Its not a biggy if numpad or any other kit fails to meet the moq. But its a biggy if the core/base kit does not succeed, which means whole project failed. Thus many designers consider to chop down the base kit as much as possible and support with it only the most popular layouts. And the most popular layouts are the range between 60% and TKL.

I personally prefer the huge base sets as it was done in GMK Carbon R2 because: its cost effective per key and most important: it does cover every basic layout properly and extensively. However most buyers look for pricing and not coverage.

So the whole development is based on experience from previous group buys.

Accents & Novelties

I am personally sad to see the final renders, do wish good luck with the drop thought.

I was really fond of the burgundy colors also the novelty design from the original buy. I think the 1u novelties in various color were nice. Personally I think the novelty kit was a make or break for this set. Sadly this just broke it for me. The reason being the removal of the 1u novelties and the adding of the orange accents in place of the burgundy. I am kinda curious to see how this set plays out as seeing how the pole went. Though 41 votes is hardly the entire community.

Probably after Canvas as Massdrop tends to alternate profiles and GMK Oblivion is due in June.

Agreed, the novelties were a key part of this set, and the burgundy and 1u accents were a must-have. That orange just clashes too much with the legend colours for me. Best of luck with the GB though! I'll see how the pricing works out for a base kit, though with GMK Calm Depths on the way it'll be harder for me to justify another pure blue/grey set.

The orange novelties kind of stick out like a sore thumb with the colors of this set. Liked the burgundy better.

I agree.   burgundy looks better than orange.

Maybe violet keycaps can be changed to burgundy?

As i said the burgundy accents are not doing well in combination with Eclipse (see the render below by Oblotzky). The orange accents do match the colorway way better. Also there are other two accents.

Anyway i am staying with orange accents.

I like the burgundy (with the same color legend as the alphas and mods) more than the purple.  Maybe burgundy can just replace the purple accents?

Color itself looks god and fits the colorway IMO, but legend color ruins it. If you'd change the legend color, I'd prefer it over the orange.

Oh well, who needs any other accent than the light blue one anyway. :D

The legend color is not the issue... (the legend color was kept just to make this fast render). The problem here is that burgundy does not pop as accent. It might look good in a different colorway constellation but not with this one.

I don't know, I still like it better than the orange personally. :O In any case, the teal accents are love.  :thumb:

Hmmmm.... trying to decide if that light "yuri" blue would compliment the wathet blue of a particular keyboard...  I think it might.

I'm linking the look of it, though!

The yuri blue is going to be much more of a cool, very light blue. The wathet blue for the E6.5 looks to be more of a robins egg blue, with a little bit more green in it. It'll probably still look very good though  :thumb:

I just read through the lines - some people are speaking about cyan color. It's not cyan but light blue which was used already for GMK Yuri alphas.

Anyway this is not the first time people call that color cyan or gray, so its not a biggy  :)) I just want to avoid any miss information ;)

Hmm this photo just made me wonder. Maybe the Yuri orange would be a good compromise for those that wanted the burgundy over the orange? Since the Yuri orange is a reddish orange? Just a thought. I'm not sure if the color really works though...

V2 orange is just fine. It's not a pure orange and is very close to Carbon orange. It's more like a faded orange.

Yuri orange on the other hand is very loud. It's more of an burning/neon orange.
