IRON180 by Smith + Rune

FEA Plate Analysis

More

Keyboard plate FEA analysis was needed to measure deflection and try to achieve a uniform plate deflection distribution across the keyboard.  This was a continuation of the work done on our Iron165 Keyboard.  You can read more up on it here and our testing methodology:
https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=101470.0
For the Iron180 I started with the same basic principles but instead of starting from scratch I imported a lot of the design features from the Iron165, added some relief cuts to better suit a TKL and began modeling.  The first results were less than ideal, as expected working with a much larger plate.  Here are the initial results.

Results had a large range from 0.2532mm down to 0.0990mm.  The upper relief cuts needed to start disappearing quickly to even this up.

Much better in the upper left, but bottom row still wasnít where we wanted it.

Horizontal cuts below the ĎBí key really helped get them in line.  Plus added a lot of cuts between mod keys

Removed more relief cuts from the top, and added a connection in one to lower the right bracket key value.  Also added a connection beneath the ĎBí key but it added way to much support.

More small changes, reverted ĎBí key connection

More a quality of life, replaced all the ugly cuts at the top with the mod relief cuts, cleaned up more spots.

This was intended to be the final one but I wanted to run more test to see what difference adding some cuts to the number row would make on the alphas below them.

Finalized plate!

how come you never measured the spacebar? I'm afraid it's going to feel stiff because of that mounting position.

I just measure it and it's is a little stiffer than the rest of the alphas.  A little more centered around the gasket relief cut on the Tsangan buttom.  I will keep working and tweaking it for the spacebar to make it more consistent with the alphas.  Thank you for raising the question :)

lulwut

First - nope. that's not how it was done.
Second - you intentionally typed "public" - had they used them (which they didn't) why is your comment even valid? They made them public for people to use...

"I see you've used the Drop-owned public forum, Geekhack, to post your [IC] 🤔" <---this is how you sound

Apologies for being spicy - but your comment does nothing positive for anyone.

So for a logo and f13, our idea is to include an artisan anodized and matched to the color of the top case for a couple reasons.
Not a lot of keycaps sets cover f13, this way it blends right into the case and doesnít stand out like a sore thumb. Second, if you don't like branding cause I know there are TKL purist you can remove it all together. And lastly, if you do have a F13 keyset you can simply use F13 key and move it to escape or another location if you like the logo.

We liked the idea of people being able to reuse the badge or extra badges purchased with the Iron165 but couldnít find a good fit for it on the board.

IMO, a logo engraving above the arrow keys generally looks good on TKLs. I think the artisan idea is neat, but I joined the aeboards Aegis GB and they did a similar thing with a custom Rama cap. I love the board, but have literally never seen a picture with someone using the keycap. Just my two cents.

I think itís a great idea. I agree with your logic and love the flexibility to have the branding if you want it and skip it if you donít. Plus having a cap for F13 when sets donít cover it. Brilliant!

I love this the more I see it. I already have a Rama Works U80-A ordered though, so I may not be able to swing it. We'll see. Best of luck with the GB either way. Hope everyone is staying healthy and safe from the coronavirus.

Oh man this looks beautiful. I'm hoping to make this my first keyboard group buy purchase. Any idea on how much one of these kits will cost, an estimate?
Thanks

We're still finalizing some of the details so nothing concrete just yet. We'll continue to update the IC here though when we have more info.
Awesome, thanks for the reply. I am hyped for this one.

I am literally ready to buy these boards. I hope this keyboard would not be some kind of raffle like Keycult ones, those are impossible to get

Itís very likely going to be FCFS or a raffle-style sale

The plate looks really nice for the typing feel. Any chance to include foam inside the case to improve the typing sound?

Would appreciate if we can have a look at the back side of the board and an inside blast view too in the future renders.

Also, I want to ask if you would be offering a WKL version?

Iíll be getting the remaining files for the bottom design to Abec for rendering soon.  The inside of the board is largely unchanged from the Iron165 to give you an idea of the construction. All chamfers and filets are the same from the Iron165.

I'm really happy it comes with ISO :D I originally saw the IRON180 on the PBT Graen and now I want it.

The green with the brass looking amazing! Will it be a limited to a number of x number of sales or an y time frame? I think it would be best to have a group buy over a 24 hour or 1+ week period. I only say this because I seen some cases limited to 20 or so cases which is pretty annoying for buyers.

We will be running it through vendors again in each region, most likely FCFS sales. Donít sleep on it, but if you try to get it when it goes live Iím guessing you will. We will be targeting at least as many boards as we did for the Iron165, which was a quantity of 200.

Looks great. That green would be a perfect complement to my graphite 165.

The weight in the renders looks like the founders edition of the 165. Will there be a standard and a founders/special edition of this as well?

This looks awesome!  Love the design, and I'm very much in the market if I can't convince a U80-A buyer they should part ways with the board they will be just getting  :))

The show of plate design iterations was informative and gives me confidence that you all know what you are talking about!

why worry about pinpoint flex on a brass material plate without switches or caps modeled instead of just using a more flexible plate material to provide flex

Not to mention I feel like even tho these cuts might make the flex more consistent across the board, and the board more flexible, I'd be shocked if the sound didn't change significantly in the different regions.

Nice, simple and elegant.

Input for the design.
Very, very interested for PVD Silver/Chrome Brass Weight and Plate.

Longing to combine them with E-White or Silver and Black Ano Case.

Thanks.

I missed out on the 1st board and I hope I get a chance on this one.  Thank you for ISO this makes this TKL a real choice for my daily driver and a real competitor for the U-80 I have on the way.  I really like the clean lines at the back with the weight but I do wish that your mark or logo was on the board.  I really liked the last board design but feel that this is a little too plain to have come from Smith + Rune.  I will watch with serious interest.
I started with a Sinclair human flesh keyboard in 1980 and it has never stopped.

Because weíre going for a uniform typing feel. Even models with a more flexible material the lower right of keyboards is stiffer and would need to be evened out. At the end of the day, can your fingers feel the difference? Maybe? But we are also in a hobby where people prefer a couple gram differences in spring weights and a few cP difference in lubes, so why not? My original analysis did have switches and PCB modeled in, which caused an approximate 35% increase in stiffness but each simulation took around 10x longer to run. So for times sake I donít model switches, cap, or caps.
