This keyboard is 100% designed by, CADed by, manufactured by and fulfilled by Mekanisk. Specifically me, LeandreN.
PCB designed by Wilba.tech.

Purposeful design
Mekanisk will always be heading away from established design norms to create something unique. With the Tind, we mix mechanical engineering with Norwegian nature.
In the Tind, you can find the sharp beveled mountainous edges seamlessly enclosing the rest of the keyboard, on the inside and under(hidden) you find the new Mekanisk Gasket System, and the purposeful copper cornerstone which contains the serial number.

Information
Tind is a high-end keyboard with a custom moulded self-aligning gasket system. The plate has total isolation. You just build your board, connect the daughterboard, throw it in and fasten the top from the bottom with screws.

The design of this keyboard started in 2017, right after Fjell R1 finished shipping. It has been a top mount, gasket mount, bottom mount, gasket mount(again) and I think I have finally found the recipe for a good silicone gasket keyboard. I want to have this mounting system available to use in future Mekanisk keyboards, and to finally prove that the solution works, is a huge milestone for me because it allows me to integrate gaskets in a good way into future designs, and develop good designs, faster.

The keyboard uses 12 custom moulded bottom gaskets that support the plate from the bottom as well from the sides by letting the plate rest on them. This mean that no alignment is needed. There are 12 corresponding small silicone gaskets that push the plate down from the top at the same places and creates a firm grip for the plate. The plate is totally isolated from the rest of the case. The bottom silicone pieces are thicker than normal keyboard gaskets.

The plates are designed from the ground up to support the keyboard in the best possible way. These do not support switch top removal.

SHIPPING
Shipping will only be done via DHL Express directly from our factory. If you are in Norway, your order will be shipped from Norway. Shipping cost has increased in 2020, expect a higher shipping cost than you normally would. Your countries taxes are not included in the price unless you are in Norway.

WHEN
We are aiming for a late June raffle, with November shipping. The raffle will be announced beforehand, and will not come as a surprise.

FAQ
Why are there no blocked corners or winkeyless options?
We need to limit all options as much as possible for this keyboard, so for this round, only the standard layout will be available. The next round we will supply different options and might include both blocked corners and winkeyless layouts.

Will there be more color options?
Not this round.

What does gasket/isolation mount mean?
To me, it means that the plate is isolated from the rest of the case in some way. There are many different methods that are used to achieve this. We developed our own.

The status of this project is added to MEKANISK.XYZ so you can keep yourself updated there.

Thank you for reading.

YES YES YES !

One question, looking at the mounting system I was wondering if an ALPS PCB (like Hazu’s) could fit this setup ?

Looking forward for more color renders :)

Great to see so much interest in your products. Do you have an estimate of long after the initial ‘raffle round’ until a larger 2nd round? Just in case I’m not one of the favored 100...

PS - Thank you for pointing me here from the old thread.

May I know how much is the shipping cost to Asia? That may add up alot since the shipping is expensive nowadays and will be part of the consideration.

Not having WKL/HHKB/Tsangan support for a 400 dollar keyboard is disappointing imo. Adding more plate material options would be kinda cool too, especially if you can add flex cut to ur pcb for us bounce lovers :) Either way, GL with the IC!

Probably keeping options limited for easier QC. It's a handsome board regardless, and I think the construction of it is really unique.

Just want to make sure: Does the plate support split backspace and split right shift? Looks like it base on the renders, but I just want to make sure.

Nevertheless, this is really nice! Very very excited for this! I hope I get a spot @.@

generally yeah

PCB is soldered to the switches which are so it doesn't need to be attached to anything else

There are some mild relief cuts already. Might do a sound test if I am able to somewhat capture what it sounds like in real life use, if not, there will be no sound test.

I have a dream that there will be a super secret ultra-rare burnt orange color of the tind :)

The seamless would make it easier to powder coat though, right?  So maybe I could have it painted down the road.

Hello.

Due to Covid, and not to dissapoint potential buyers I will delay the delivery time of the Tind.

There are other reason aswell, Fjell R5 and Klippe T R4 are in production, and that has resulted in around 900 keyboards in the production queue. Since we don't want to skimp on quality, we are going to delay Tind a bit.

I am postponing the estimated delivery from September-October to November.

Thank you.

Yes, in the future.
The plan is to offer different colors each round, and I have some special plans aswell.

I will make sure to have representative pictures of the keyboards before the raffle opens.

Yes, only 100 kits will be sold this round. You enter the raffle for a chance to be one of the 100 that are eligible to make a purchase.

I initially said late June for the raffle, which may be, but whatever date I decide to run the raffle, the shipping date is still November 2020.

So I hope it is okay for folks with a little bit flexibility on the raffle date as long as it is announced in advance, and that I can gurantee a delivery in November 2020 no matter when the buy itself will happen.

Sounds good to me, I was just curious since the delivery time had been pushed back if it also affected the raffle time. Either way, can't wait for this!

It all depends how long things take with shipping etc. for the prototype. That will determine the raffle date.  All the boards can be produced and shipped in November regardless of when the raffle is, due to having reserved production slots.

The ultimate end goal for Mekanisk is to have all the boards ready before the raffle, so you can have “immediate” shipment.  ;D ;D we are not there quite yet, but sooner than you think.

Hi LeandreN, i have been waiting for this case since early 2019 although i know you have been developing it since much earlier, and i got a couple of questions.
What are the plans for Tind in the future, will be more raffles or gb (if this raffle goes well)?
I'm guessing that the plate is the regular 1.5mm, do you if making an alps compatible 1.2mm plate will be a problem or should be ok? (assuming that you realese the plate files for people making their own) I'm making this question because maartenwut probably will be making an alps pcb with daugtherboard support

Hi. 1.2mm should be fine but you get less gasket compression.
I will release the files. And yes, there will be more raffles in the future.

That is great i would love test it with the regular plate 1.5, and a custom 1.2 for alps. I definitely will be at raffle, although my luck kinda sucks but let's see this time. It's lovely to see the essence of Fjell in a gasket mount, also the mekanisk blue and the R1 grey colors are top notch, will be a hard choice for most of the winners.

Good luck the raffle :)

I haven't bought one of these fancy gasket-mounted keyboards before.  If I wanted to replace the PCB/plate with something that supports my layout (JIS), is that a reasonable thing to do or is the plate custom-moulded to this case and thus having my own printed would be likely to yield worse results?

JIS contains a lot of different standards if I am not mistaken. The bottom row on some of these layouts are not supported by the PCB or the plate. You could design your own plate, then get a 60% PCB with daughterboard support and JIS layout support. If that exist.

JIS contains a lot of different standards if I am not mistaken. The bottom row on some of these layouts are not supported by the PCB or the plate. You could design your own plate, then get a 60% PCB with daughterboard support and JIS layout support. If that exist.

Thanks for the reply.

All that would be required for *basic* JIS support is the ability to swap the right shift key with the Menu/Fn key, so that the 1U appears on the left and the right shift is flush to the right of the keyboard.  That, in combination with the existing ISO support and the split backspace, is enough to get the correct layout for the alphas.

For full JIS support, you would need a smaller space bar configuration to make room for two extra 1U or 1.25U buttons to either side of it, and optionally a third 1U as well.  For example, 1.25U/2.75U/1.25U/1U takes up the same amount of space as a 6.25U space bar and would give you all the keys for both Mac and Windows JIS configurations.

The latter is a big ask, and not many PCBs support it either — some GH60 clones with “minila” style layouts, and that’s about it.  But the former is relatively easy to add to what is otherwise a pretty standard PCB, and I believe also useful for Brazilian users (though I admit I don’t know much about this), so I’d love to see greater mainstream adoption of a “swapped” split right shift in the future.

In the meanwhile, I’m pretty resigned to the fact that JIS support is not going to be common on PCBs for the foreseeable future, so I’m trying to learn what I can about PCB design so that I could design something with JIS support to use myself.  I am still very much in the “no idea what I’m doing” phase of that exploration, though ;-)

I’ll have a look into what goes into designing a PCB with daughterboard support.  How much clearance is there under the PCB in this case to seat the daughterboard? (I presume that’s how this works?)

I am not rushing any of this. I am waiting for the final prototype before letting people entering the raffle.
This will also be used for detail photos, so you can make a decision on whether you want to enter the raffle or not, based on production photos.

The prototype is estimated to ship next week, and will probably arrive late next week. These times, it is difficult to estimate this, so I ask for your patience regarding this.

Thank you!

[IC] Tind: Reworked - 60% Gasket Mount

This Is a fairly basic question I haven’t seen answered. Sorry if I am making people repeat themselves or restate the obviously established. If so, please point me at the existing answer with a URL?

How many years would a gasket last? I know we’re aiming to optimise typing feel, not longevity, I accept that, but I’d like to know what I’m getting. The Fjell / Tind design is pretty ageless, IMO, by the way.

Would buying spares now even help, would the spare not expire alongside the original? Would it make a difference if the spare is shrink-wrapped, is it exposure to air that does it for the gasket, or pressure from being used?

I’m guessing the choice of material makes a big difference here.

If buying a spare now wouldn’t help, how about keeping spares in the store, and maybe also supplying 3d printing plans, if that’s at all feasible?

You can thank the designer of the Fat Boy for putting these thoughts in my head!

Silicone gaskets will last years and years. I always support my products, and will keep them in stock if there is a need for replacements.

Thanks LeandreN.

I don’t doubt that you would support your products. It’s a good reason to buy from Mekanisk or companies like Rama, you’ve been around for a while and look like you will be around even longer. I also like that you refine and improve designs like the Klippe and Fjell.

I’m new to this hobby, and the Klippe T r4 that’s on the way is my first board, by the way. So I’m still asking basic questions.

I also had a hunch silicone would last longer than some other materials around.

I think my question was more generic - there’s a big rush to gasket mounts being part of one-off group buys, but how long would those gaskets last?

It was prompted by the IC thread for the Fat Boy board, designed to be serviceable and hackable (like I said before). I think it has grommets rather than gaskets - is that burger mount?

I'm not certain you can answer the more generic question, LeandreN, so no need to answer, I was just going off on a tangent.

I think there are many people waiting for the Tind GB, rather spend your time on that!

Thank you. Again, that color goes with Sol Dark so well.

It looks like the caps are sitting slightly above the side of the case, making for a small gap when viewed from the side like that. Is this due to the mounting method? Is it something that will be fixed in the final version?

They are not above the edge of the case, just looks like it from that angle.

lol, when you think you missed the raffle on March 3rd, but then you realize the date is internationally formatted, and then you feel guilty for being raised on yet another stupid american standard.

A good rule of thumb is to assume that the date isn't in middle-endian (US) format if you see periods used as delimiters instead of slashes :)

The following conventions are the most common:
dd.mm.yyyy (little-endian / European)
mm/dd/yyyy (middle-endian / US)
yyyy-mm-dd (big-endian / ISO)
