Maybe someone who lives closer to SP could receive the keycaps; pack them then ship them; while panda does the negotiating etc etc. Also less work on one individual besides :X

Any takers ?
I'll offer to do the shipping & receiving...

Ok so question is.... Panda do you want to handle the negotiating process with SP and also decide what the keyset for this MO should be ???

Hm... adamgoldberg you have 15 posts :X hm.... no offense but i think most people would have been more comfortable leaving that step to a more senior member. But then again it's up for you guys to decide :}

OK, here's a Problem for a Panda.

If everybody wants laser-etched non-filled PBT keys why buy from Signature Plastics?

Why not have a Chinese Geekhacker buy a bunch of KBC laser-etched non-filled PBT keys (they are dirt, dirt cheap) in CHINA-town and throw them in a box to send to Santa's Elves and Reindeer?  I'm sure we have trustworthy Chinese members.  I think.
If you guys pay for half of my ticket, I will fly to China and do this.

Pretty sure they do, if you search taobao for KBC 104 you'll definitely see some laser-etched "big keys"

I'm all for the KBC route, I prefer the profile to the SP ones.

If you are contacting the KBC guys aka imsto instead of taobao, please ask him about those dye-sub keycaps, KBC has the tools to make them too. They mentioned that it is pretty expensive, IDK how they define "expensive".

Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm really disappointed that I missed WhiteRice's first round double-shots. Really like how they turned out.

Consider this my posted notification of intent to buy whatever gets decided on for this round, barring a truly heinous color-scheme choice. Very interested in getting a set of true double-shot keys for my 3 month old, and already much-loved, Filco.

People are talking about that stuff because what is being ordered is not yet set in stone, despite the original title.  The expectation for a while now has been that there would be no moving forward here until after the holidays, so people are just chiming in with their ideas.

No.  We demand you place an order before knowing what we decide to order. :der:

You make it seem like this whole project depends on YOUR order...don't let the door hit your ass on the way out, lol.

I do, however, agree that this process has been way too slow moving with lack of direction.

Someone needs to take over leadership of the order. That person is ultimately going to make a decision and tell some people "Don't like it? Tough, because this is what we're doing". At that point, if enough interest can be garnered, the set order goes through.

I've considered doing it but the logistics aren't that fun...

I'm in as long as there's the "awesome-face key" unless the rest is pastel coloured keycaps.

We need multiple poll to fix this thread. e.g

Type:
- double-shot
- abs - dye-sublimated
- abs - lasered
- pbt - dye-sublimated (not sure if possible)
- pbt - lasered

Colours 1
- etc
- etc
- etc

Colours 2
- etc
- etc
- etc

I could run a survey to try to get some opinions on color schemes if people want. I don't have the Sig Plastics color wheel so somebody else would have to judge the feasibility of a proposed design.

The only shared hosting I have is for a client (can't get away with running survey software on their dime) and I have a free host that'll run it but it crumbles as soon as there are more than two people on the site (dreadfully slow). I can always pick the latter but it's not ideal if someone has the former and will volunteer it on a temporary basis.

It's the reason why when I proposed Sig Plastics double shots back in may that it fell through - I couldn't garner a consensus.

I couldn't get many people to line up for a plain design. Whatever comes through is unlikely to just be black & white.

If that is the case, then abs doubleshots make more sense. It's more durable and clearer anyway :x Only question is, what font to use and how much will that cost ?

Or option 2; some sort of PBT laser etched bulk.

But if you ask me, doubleshots > pbt :p

What about this color scheme (not including the green because i hate that color)

So this time around uses a reverse color scheme from the previous black/dark grey tone; to a white/light grey tone scheme. Classic :D

Alternatively there is the plain look

double shots....instead of doing something colorful (since everyone has their preferred colors), why not try black keycaps with glow in dark legends?
or
ideally, we can gather members from other forums for the dye-sub PBT keycaps. Look at the durability of Model M keycaps, I am pretty sure there are more than 2 people who are interested in these...

The solid keycaps with glowing legends was brought up earlier and SP won't/can't do that.

Some restrictions:

We will need a minimum of 50 participants. Otherwise it's not really affordable.

We don't have a choice of font [Arial], but we do have a choice of placement.

The keycaps must be ABS for the double-shot process. Blanks can be PBT or ABS. Glow-in-the-dark can't be used with the double-shot process. Double-shots can only have one color in the legend. Multi-colored legends require pad-printing or dye sub.

We're restricted in color choice by what Signature has in stock. They have a lot of colors, so it's probably not a problem, but we may be limited in certain parts of the spectrum or some more subtle shades.

Neither can they make the keycaps thicker.

If anybody wants to drop the 60 grand to pay for the retooling costs for thicker keys, I'll talk to signature about it.

Custom legends are doable and dye sub is supposedly very pricey.

Custom legends for double shot keys are $15 or $20 at Signature Plastics for the tooling. I ordered and distributed the original first batch of the geekhack key earlier this year.

Double shot is actually the cheapest option signature plastic offers. As you see pad printing is more expensive and sublimation dye is out of the question.
Lovely day for a GUINNESS
