Holy guacamole the stupid PayPal voice system has to be the worst voice recognition thing in the world. I instantly go on full tilt when I have to call them.

Dude I just yell customer service until I get a person. All voice systems get the same treatment. **** talking to a computer.
No, he’s not around. How that sound to ya? Jot it down.

When it rains, it pours......

My mother was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and she's been prepping for radioactive iodine treatment in the next week.

I just found out a few moments ago that my dad's been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer; my work problems seem so insignificant now.

Oof. I lost my father-in-law to pancreatic cancer several years ago. I still wear a "Fight Pancreatic Cancer" purple bracelet every day. Hope they caught it early and he qualifies for a clinical trial.

Hang in there, it's a rough ride and they're going to need support in the coming months.

Ok so just got a notification, but it was ~30 minutes delayed.
I'm getting the same thing. Pretty annoying.

Man, I'm so sorry to hear this. My mom went through a battle with Cancer and it sucked. Make sure you stay positive and always be sure to talk with people as you go through this. I'll be sending you good vibes. Stay strong.

My dad's father and my mom's mother have both been through it and survived.  I was pretty optimistic about my mom's treatment as well, but this is just soul-crushing.  He just retired a year ago and is just now doing the things he's always wanted to do, like racing cars.

6 years old is definitely a better time for the vaccine to fail than later in life though, and there have been some studies saying that having chickenpox once is even more effective in making you immune than the vaccine.

Wait, what?  Chicken Pox is a thing that you only ever get once, so having it means you won't get it again.  But having it once makes you susceptible to getting Shingles, which is the whole reason for the vaccine.

Unless your comment was a subtle joke.  :P

What Hoff said is my understanding too. You only ever get chicken pox once. And the dormant chicken pox virus can cause shingles.

Sorry, I mangled the **** out of that sentence. It's wayyyy better to contract chicken pox while you're six than when you're say 15 (not that it's nice at any time. And yes, chicken pox does allow you to get shingles, but the chance is still fairly low, and you can also still get shingles even if you've never had chicken pox. I didn't really convey my point well, but basically if you're gonna have chicken pox, 6 is the best time to do it, and now he'll obviously never get it again so the vaccine is unneeded. I don't think it's good, but it does have a positive side.

This is the other thing, shingles don't just happen because you got chicken pox, they need other factors like stress and significant consumption of alcohol to trigger them. To be honest I surprised you got them just from finals, usually it takes more.

I had the shingles when I was younger, probably about 17. That was serious pain right there. I couldn't move my arm for like a week. I never drink, but I can assume I was under so serious stress. I had no idea that was a trigger. And if it is, how it hasn't come back since....

Hate voice systems. But I'm fine with dialpads, as dialing 0 usually gets you right to a customer service representative.

My daughter is in a ballet company, and they always do a Christmas show. So, starting about August, they are listening to about a dozen Christmas songs, multiple times a day, at least once a week, and dancing to them. I don't know how she bears it.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

Local radio station had an online vote to decide when to start it. Overwhelming response was "Today"

I always want to learn Christmas songs for the classical guitar but I never think about it until it's too late in the year for me to make the time to rehearse. I should set a calendar reminder for August.

I worked retail through college and when Christmas music started so did the misery. You can only hear so many versions of Frosty the freaking Snowman before you're ready to hang yourself from the rafters. I like Christmas but I can't do the music. I also hate that store setup for it so early. Wife dragged me into an arts and crafts store on Halloween and the store was already full of Christmas stuff.

Severe terrorism threat.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

I worked at the same store at ny local mall for 3 years while I was in high school. Every year it was the same songs, they even had the songs play in the same order so everyday working was basically on repeat.

I swear my Firefox search box just randomly picks a search engine when I try to search for something, and it's terrible.  Amazon don't know s**t about coding, Wikipedia doesn't do grammar, and GitHub does not host info about music - why can't it just use the damn search engine I've chosen?!

What do you suggest instead, Chromium?  No way I'm going to use full version Chrome and tell Google everything (they aren't even in my list of search engines to accidentally use) and Opera was just bad when last I tried it.  Also if I switch I'd need to install add-ons again and reconfigure my tmpfs and init scripts - if I had other complaints I'd consider it but it's only about 1/10 searches so not worth the hassle.

Chromium, yes. I tried to use many browsers and found this one to be usable and less awful.

tmpfs and init scripts? Are you keeping the browser in some sort of hand-made sandbox?

Not quite, just using tmpfs for my cache as /home is small and on an SSD so I'm concerned about wear.  Have excess RAM, may as well use it...

Guess I should try Chromium before condemning it for having an older brother but I've been on Firefox for at least 12 years - will be incredibly strange looking for another icon
