What words or phrases do you hate?
« on: Sat, 20 September 2014, 18:33:41 »
Please tell us about any words, phrases or nuances in grammar that you find repulsive, idiotic, or irritating.

I absolutely despise "wifey". In fact, adding a "y" to any word or given name where it just doesn't belong bothers me. Altering/over-dramatizing words by implementing Y's in order to make them more edgy or casual is also silly. Examples: Jeffy (Jeff), lappy (laptop), vaycay (vacation).

Here are some other things that I find to be more devastating than others:

-Spooning
-Panties
-"Baby bump"
-Shortening "aluminum" to "alu"
-"Free-balling"
-"The game" in the context of sporting events
-Daddy-O, Danny-O, etc.

Diminutives in general are very irritating.

I particularly dislike the question "You liiiike?" unless the asker is very uncomfortable in the English language all around.

Also, "Don't you agree?" whether I do, or not.

Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

You'll probably not want to talk to me then.  :))  My former roommate once said irregardless as a mistake, and ever since then the whole group of friends would say it as a joke just to be silly.  And now I saw it all the time.  :-*

What about it's use in Fantastic Mr. Fox?

Badger: In summation, I think you just got to not do it, man. That's all.
Mr. Fox: I understand what you're saying, and your comments are valuable, but I'm gonna ignore your advice.
Badger: The cuss you are.
Mr. Fox: The cuss am I? Are you cussing with me?
Badger: No, you cussing with me?
Mr. Fox: Don't cussing point at me!
Badger: If you're gonna cuss with somebody, you're not gonna cuss with me, you little cuss!
Mr. Fox: You're not gonna cuss with me!

When people use "don't" instead of "doesn't"

Example."It don't work"

It's very common where I live.

I absolutely despise the phrase "it is what it is"...

Anytime someone tells me "it is what it is" I just want to grab them by the collar, shake them a bit, and tell them to stop being so ****ing defeatist.

Oh, I just remembered two more:

"Hella". If you say this I assume you're white trash.

"Chunk" as in "I'm going to chunk a brick at your head if you don't shut up".  I heard this one all the time when I was in Texas.  It's chuck. Chunk is something you tear off of a loaf of bread.

You all do seem to be distraught with rather fickle things.

I personally detest any of the word-play used in popular media. Word-play is to be used in addition to a mastery of the written word, something I don't dare to confess to have.

Also, I hate that I have fallen victim to "bro".

Seriously bro, I hate it.

using the word "school" for everything

common idioms of black american english ("he say" instead of "he says", etc)

inappropriate usage of "ninja", "rock star" and especially "evangelist"

combining the word "orgasm" with whatever ("nerdgasm", "eargasm")

cnn's style of replacing random words with commas
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Something I was getting a little sick of, and am quite frankly RELIEVED that it has declined in usage... was using EPIC as an adjective for Every. ****ing. Thing.

Eating a sixteen ounce sirloin is not epic. Eating a 72 ounce steak is. I don't want to hear about how epic your meal was when it was clearly NOT epic.

And don't even get me started on Epic Fail.

Faceplanting on the ground because you tripped is not an Epic Fail. That's just a Regular Fail. Perhaps even a Light Fail.

Business "buzz words" (Including that phrase, buzz words)

Changing helpdesk to service desk

Ridiculous job descriptions, which make you go - "Oh, so you're actually just X then?"

Professional athletes generic answers to every question. "Yeah we played well as a team, got the three points, really happy with the result, fans were great" etc etc

At the end of the day. AT THE END OF THE DAY. www.youtube.com/watch?v=psNAGm5Wpx0

Find, field and understand. WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?

Oh, and calling someone a "legend". No, your mate is not a legend. No, Nigel Farage/Steven Gerrard/Gerard Butler is not a legend.

Among others.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Naa its not the 72 ounce steak that's epic its the bill you get for not being able to finish-off the bigass baked potato and salad that comes with it.

BTW, that place has a killer ostrich burger. Edit: Or was it emu, cant remember.

"How does this new strategy impact our business?"

Well, I'll tell you... your new strategy can certainly AFFECT your business, but unless this new strategy is an object traveling at terminal velocity or greater and is on a collision course with your offices, it will not ****ing impact your business at all.

Which place? To my recollection, there are multiple places that offer the 72 ounce steak challenge.

EXACTLY.

"What services are impacted?" No services, just software.

"Is it business critical?" YES, I CAN'T DO ANY WORK SO OF COURSE IT IS. "Is there a work around?" YES BUT THIS IS THE QUICKEST WAY.

At the time I went there they had an Ostrich or Emu burger as well, you can get Buffalo Burgers all over the place.

On topic: Pay to win... Almost always misused pay to win is actually rare, except for on mobile.
