I am an old newbie, that aspire to be a good fellow someday; maybe, after some years even a member. A established one? I am not sure if I want to be established, it sounds like being in a comfort zone.

I feel old :( and I've not even been here that long, been here long than people who are considered established, and I still feel like an FNG.

You are indeed a fine nasty gurl.

Wait, what?  What's an FNG?

I'll never forget r00tworm, those guys singlehandedly killed OG Miami, which then gave rise to Miami R1, which was much better than OG Miami haha

so what does bunny smell and taste like?

Lmao dis kid

Openly rims demik and then has a pop at anyone who dare to thank or like any other user who openly does good. Why don't you go back to crying about people up selling Brocaps on your $1,000 second hand GON? Lmao

so mad

savior/savour

Yeah I'm pretty mad, you can tell by the way I replied to you that I'm crazy mad.
What makes me mad is that a guy I didn't really know at the time came in and saved a GB I was gutted died after the r00tworm attack, and made it better by inc ISO mods (that wernt apart of the OG set (this was before your time kid)). He then later did a second round with Cherry legends and proper ISO mods and then gifted it to me for free.

Yeah I'm super mad about that. Lmao.
If you want to try and call me out, I got no issue, but least put some effort in youth.

I think to answer the question you have to define what both 'established' and 'member' are.  Member of what?  Geekhack is a community, so a member of the community.  Established is a lot harder to define because you can establish yourself as part of a community by association of that community and the community associating with you.  But based on that definition, almost any suer that's registered and into keyboards and is interacting with the community and the community with the user would be established.

So that's clear as mud.  :thumb: ;D

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I am a well-establish member of GH because I've been a member since 2011 and not once have I come up with the genius idea of threatening artisan makers, writing passive-aggressive open letters of disproval, or you know, just being a really annoying attention-seeking spammer, in hopes of getting caps.

I've always treated people with respect, made an effort to keep a lighthearted and respectful attitude, and hoped for the best.

Treat others how you would treat yourself, don't cry about losing artisan raffles, and try to contribute to the community in one way or another. That's the true meaning of a well-established member.

Artisans are just one subset of geekhack, sure they tend to drive most of the posting traffic but they aren't required.

I have very few anymore, mostly I just keep things that are sentimental now.

It is not hard to understand how an expensive manufacturing process like double shot molding drive high prices for small plastic parts like key caps; but, it is a little hard to understand how hand made key caps may command insanely high ones. Aesthetics apart, that is a very personal matter, the economics of the last ones is just too out of context even within the already bizarre value environment of our hobby.

If I do not care about artisan's key caps at all; that, makes me a not established member?
Artisans are just one subset of geekhack, sure they tend to drive most of the posting traffic but they aren't required.

I have very few anymore, mostly I just keep things that are sentimental now.

It is not hard to understand how an expensive manufacturing process like double shot molding drive high prices for small plastic parts like key caps; but, it is a little hard to understand how hand made key caps may command insanely high ones. Aesthetics apart, that is a very personal matter, the economics of the last ones is just too out of context even within the already bizarre value environment of our hobby.

Come on now you were here when the cherry red escape key went for $250 :P

And many artisans put a lot of work into their products and they don't all go for crazy high prices.

Oh man I truly enjoyed watching the rise, peak, and crash of the red Cherry ESCapade.

I agree about not understanding the sustained high prices.  I guess part of it is that we all have some sort of crazy in us already to be so anal retentive about our keyboards. Add to that limited supply, being hand made by a member of the community, and constant "ooh's and aah's" by the membership.

Or maybe it's just a sign of the coming of the End Times.

People are free to expend their hard earned money where they want, and that is undisputed.

On the escape key cap, I'd say that scarcity also tends to inflate prices, but again, a steady flow of items, that are pretty much not needed, that run for very high prices just do not have logic. Again, we are here against conventional Economic wisdom, but certain products and services have reasonable value and prices that follow it, some others are just in a more extreme condition.

The only thing I've figured out is that they're like action figures/comic books/toys for keyboard fanatics.  So like a Pokemon of sorts for keyboard enthusiasts.  I definitely don't get it, but it is neat to see how much time and detail goes into the artisans.  They definitely are art, no question about it.  :thumb:

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Time to bring this out again:

Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

It's funny you guys mention this.  When I met up with Lastpilot, it was during a business trip he made to WI with his colleagues.  They all work to preserve the oral history of their region, so they all were absolutely fascinated with our hobby (I brought a decent amount of keyboards with me so they got a good sampling :D ).  One colleague in particular wanted to document our little corner of the internet, but of course it would be a daunting task and I'm sure it won't actually happen, but still - the interest was there.  ;)
