Yeah, what he said, though there can still be issues with caps that are relatively thin, even 1,3mm caps can still have issues. I think the reason here for going with north facing is the large modules in the top edge of the pcb, but honestly a better layout or flipping just a few switches rather than ALL of them would've been a much better solution.
Might also be just because its meant as a lower end board and people might want to use it with shine through caps (?) but I dont think anybody would complain.
