I just bolded the mechanical part of your response, and realized I was using a mechanical switch for all those years and telling people on the forum I've never tried anything besides a rubber-dome. I hope I wasn't lying about the rubber-dome part, I mean these are still considered rubber-domes and not a mechanical keyboard.. right(Referring to the Dell Quiet Key with blue ALPS)?

Blue ALPS are mechanical keyswitches, but the Dell Quiet Key is a rubber dome. Why did you say " I have a rubber-dome with blue alps" ? Now the Dell QC is a really very good RD, in my opinion, but it's not got blue alps last I checked.

The type of switch your keyboard has is called "rubber dome" (short for rubber dome over membrane). Some mechanicals (like the BL82 by TG3) have a polymer sheet ower the switches, combining the two. Keyboards with switches by Topre have rubber domes over a capacitive spring and sensor. Very few keyboards have "mechanical" key switches that also incorporate rubber domes. Pretty much the only one I know of is that cortronics (hall effect) switch that used a RD for the spring. Some showed up in Canada a while ago.

Almost all rubber domes are just that: rubber domes. There is a sheet of them over a membrane. Your Dell keyboard is like this.

I haven't seen one, but I imagine the blue is a "slider" that sits over the rubber dome. If you take it apart, I am sure you will be able to see this. There are no properly "mechanical" switches hidden under there.

Sorry for the longer reply. I just thought there might be a bit of a miscommunication between all the "look it's a RD" people and you. Further posts to that effect really didn't serve to explain, so I took it upon myself.

That said, I will attest that the dell Quiet Key is a cut above most rubber dome keyboards.

I have only used mechanical switches for five minutes tops and I only tried cherry MX: black, blue, and red. I'd be curious to see if I'll end up with a different keyboard, because I'd like to take my keyboard to public places; Are blue switches just as audible as reds if I tend to bottom out?

If I always bottom out, when typing, does the clicking noise of blues make them more audible than reds?

Yes. The lego-like clack of the of the Cherry switch is common between them all if you bottom them out. There is also a lighter clack sound when they reach the top again. In practice it is quieter with linear switches like reds and blacks, because it is easier to slow your keystroke before you hit the bottom. The click from the blue switches is in addition to (and happens slightly before) the clack of the key bottoming.

In other words, most Cherry switches go CLACK-clack when they hit the bottom and the top, while blue switches go CLICK-CLACK-clack. You can pretty much eliminate the CLACK with o-rings.

Did they swap those 2 configs over on you because they were short only 5 each, or did you not receive any in those 2 configs?

I am perfectly fine with changing my MX black/blue LED over to a MX red/white LED if that helps.

I put in my order in 2011 December, for the only ones offered at the time MXBlue/GreenLED, and I didn't change when the option came up--didn't want to make things more complicated or difficult. I would hope that means that I'll have the keyboard in my hands this week, but aside from the beautiful pictures of boxes of boxes I have no idea what's going on.
