I sold my HHKB and bought a RF 87u 55g. Did I make a huge mistake? (I really did love my HHKB)

Yeah, I think I will too. I wanted to try the 55g RF though. Maybe I will just harvest the domes for that sweet 55g HHKB.

So today I made a decision to rip open my less than 1 moth old HHLB Pro 2 in black... I modified it a bit and swapped out the Yopre switches with Nova Touch switches. And I have to say for not knowing WTF I was doing I did a bang up JOB!!! All switches were swapped minus the Space bar, because the NT stabilizers did not fit like the Topre ones. Only thing that is a bit off obviously is the key caps themselves. Don't have the same dimension of keys.

Don't hate though! I left my Type S untouched!

Yopre. That's a new one.

Thorpe rulez!1!!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Just silenced and lubed my board with hypersphere rings and krytox 206/1506.

I was extremely hesitant to lube my board since the first time I did it with EK mech lube 2 i absolutely hated it.

I have a new found appreciation for my HHKB now, its heavenly with the hypersphere + krytox combo.

I thought it was the lack of the arrow cluster and heavy Windows OS use that caused my displeasure with the HHKB Pro 2, but upon reflecting on nubbinator's post... it's actually the crippling nihilistic revelations of this mortal shell.

was the thick version.  Really changed up my 55g HHKB with the hypersphere rings.  I wonder how extra thick lube would feel like on this board.

I guess as long as the slider travel surface is done with proper lube, there should not be any major difference between lubing the slider rails or slider housings. Thanks for the info, can't wait to do it myself too.
I think that a thick layer of lube on the stabilizer wire and the plastic connection points of the spacebar stab will also eliminite/dampen the rattle a bit, will try and report. Any experiences about that?

Didn't like the layout and did not like the feel either.

I'm actually enjoying the plate-mountedness of the FC66C. I had the RF55g but couldn't really enjoy it for long since I sold it.

I would say that the FC660C is a damn good topre board but the layout doesn't work well enough for me to be my driver, which is what I wanted due to its arrow cluster. I will be getting a RF45g uniform soon.

HHKB reigns supreme, no doubt!!

@illitirit: Thanks for the video. Your HHKB has an exquisite sound. The combination of Silencing Rings and a careful lube job seems to work best for damping unwanted noise and bringing out the thock sound of the board. So far, I have gotten my best results using Superlube 51010 oil, but I would also like to try Krytox oil if I can determine just the right viscosity.

@derb2k2: I had a similar experience with the FC660C. I enjoyed the solidity, but I gave it away because of the layout and form factor. I enjoy 60% and TKL, but I haven't been able to warm up to any board in the twilight zone between 60% and TKL.

I think the krytox lube i used 105 / 1506 mixture is a bit too thin for the stabilizers even though i purchased the thick version.  When I lubed my board I actually took apart all the stabilized keys and removed whatever stock lube comes from the factory.  I then put a thin layer over all contact points with the krytox mixture.  The lube in my opinion is a TAD runny for stabilzers but still works perfectly fine.

I was getting a bit of spacebar rattle and my enter key i could hear ringing.  The lube at least alleviated that annoyance, but I cant help in my head think that an extra thick lube would feel better on the stabilizers.

I think the thick version is perfect for alpha keys.

I'll crosspost my gpl205 findings here:
I had a rattly spacebar on my type-s and I mean it rattled a lot and it was annoyingly loud. I've applied some gpl205 with a brush, quite a thick layer and spread it out between contacts of stab wire and the plastic places. Now, the spacebar is firm, no noise, not even moving when tapped on the bar - perfect. I've applied a very thin layer on the rails of the switches and it's even more smoother and the thock is evident but really silent, so in the office it can't bother the coworkers...but the gorgeus feel is there, oh man :)

For me, the board is now perfect, I guess those little problems with stabs shouldn't be there at all when coming out of the factory...stock grease vs. krytox...can't believe the difference! So yeah, lubed board is really that better! :thumb:

Get anothre hhkb man!

Demik?? Is that you?  :))

@Hypersphere yep. To be honest though, with your rings and medium krytox lube, typing on the FC660 is one of the best typing experiences I've ever had. Right up there with HHKB. I will be doing the same for my incoming RF45g soon so I'm looking forward to it.

Hello, not sure if anyone remembers but I created a bit of a bamboozle a few pages back when telling everyone my initial experience with the hhkb type S. The reactions were very warranted and I would like to update people on my new opinion of the HHKB. My new non type S arrived a while ago and I have concluded that the hhkb IS scratchy, as others have also said before, however it does not matter and I somehow really like it's scratchiness. I now prefer it to plate mounted Topre. It has a nice bouncy feeling, like the upstroke is stronger. I also like the sound. Besides all that it does have some superior feeling to it that I can't quite describe. It just seems as others have described: "fun".

All I had to do was silence it, lubricate the spacebar stabilizers because it rattled quite a bit and add pbt spacebar. Here is a video I made if you want to hear it:

That's pretty much how I described it in my HHKB vs Realforce 87U review in the Reviews section.

The 87U is smoother and more consistent sounding, as well as more quiet.

However, the HHKB has more character and is simply more fun to use. The exception is when I tire of the function layout for using the nav keys as I don't think that it's set up efficiently.

Lubing the switch rails with a thin layer makes it so much smoother...no scratchiness whatsover.
+1 on lubing the stabs with krytox,  I can't believe the difference too. :thumb:

I need to get in on this lubing. I also need to hypersphere the HHKB, i'd love to see how those two feel together, because they sound beautiful (in the lubed/sphered HHKB typing test videos i've seen)
