I feel bad saying this, but reading this totally made me laugh out loud. And while I was in a very serious meeting.

I feel your pain. Reminds me of my boxer (brief) strap slap on the good ol' boys downstairs story.

RIP demik 2K15.

I miss these guys: litster, PrinsValium, hashbaz, reaper, Sifo, tsangan, Boost, LethalSquirrel, eth0s, thegunner100, Input Nirvana, mkawa, lysol, rknize, alaricljs, aggiejy, SmallFry.

I know a few of them are still around, just not as active as before.

Nostalgia is bothering me. Not the forum theme or keyset.

Electron shells are complicated, until you come out the other side.  Then it all seems so simple (albeit difficult to explain).

But thermo, solubility, and packing are so much fun.  I love that stuff.  You just have to give it time to crystallize in your mind.  Phase changes and reaction rates are fun too.  That is what I am doing next week, but for realsies.

I had the opposite experience.  :))

Everything made perfect sense until I learned that the orbitals don't really exist. This was particularly confusing in Inorganic because you're basing the structure off of shells that aren't shells but are instead just probabilities of an electron field - all that quantum nonsense really throws a wrench in an otherwise sensible model.

There you are, beginner chemistry student. You understand these circular orbitals and the how electrons are arranged within them now, right? Okay good. Now forget all that, because here is how they work in reality. [Points to 3D models]

Exactly!  :))  But even the 3D models make sense eventually, because I can imagine how the P-orbitals go together and how the shells end up interacting.  It's that damn quantum stuff that knocked me back to the side of not-fully-understanding-the-theory-but-can-apply-the-models.  :|

To be fair, electron shells are confusing as hell.  :P

It was made worse by the fact that he was a chug and plug style teacher and an awful professor who played favorites with athletes.  I would try and go to office hours, but he was a huge ******* and would just tell you to read your textbook and if you didn't understand it, tough ****.

I don't do well with plug and chug, I need to see why I'm doing what I'm doing and how it relates.  It's why I did poorly at stats and physics, because I've never had a professor explain the relationships within the equation and what the math is telling you.  Once I understand what it's telling me, it takes on a grammatical and logical component that you can build on.  That's why calculus was easy for me, because I had a teacher who was good at explaining what the equation actually said.

Plug'n'chug always bothered me too, and there were quite a few equations that didn't make sense (like partial derivatives and stuff like that). But then once I learned how to do those and what everything meant, it was better. Thermo was confusing during the course because the prof taught it as pure plug'n'chug, but by the time I graduated I had taken enough other classes with actual profs teaching things (diffusion, etc) to fill in the gaps.  :thumb:

But I totally agree with you on the method of teaching being really important.  Some people can be told and equation, memorize it, and be fine.  I need to understand the equation in order to have any hope of remembering it.

chemistry can suck my c***

Hey now.

Yeah wtf alienman.  :(  Chemistry is da best.

I hated it in high school cause my teacher was **** (legitimately terrible teacher), but fell in love with the subject in college once I had a competent teacher.  Maybe you just need to have a better experience with it.  :)  Or maybe you just hate it.  :(

I had a god awful teacher in college.  I thought I understood it in high school, but he ruined it and made electron shells confusing as hell.

I agree with that sentiment entirely.  I have had teachers that focused on memorization as part of the learning process, and rote learning is only useful to pass.  If you ever want to use it, you need to get to that point where the concepts become linguistically native, even if you can't put them in simple terms.

I mean ****, I'm doing my PhD in a Physical Chemistry lab, and I couldn't solve a Schrodinger without looking things up.  But I can still imagine what the shape of the orbitals would look like without the equation because I understand the concepts of how the nodes form from the wavefunction.  The holistic approach is often shied away from in the physical sciences, but it is often the source of actual development in the field.
