Spilled soda on Razer BlackWidow Ultimate, Help wanted
« on: Wed, 26 September 2012, 11:43:24 »
Hi guys!

I recently spilled some soda on my keyboard. At first the keyboard worked but it clicked some buttons by itself. Now the keys dont work at all, it doesnt react to keypress. But the keyboards lights still works.

Do you guys have any idea of something I can try to fix it?

I've read several posts on forums what I can try, but Im not sure they've had the same problem as me.

Sry for bad English.

Thanks in Advice!
/Emil

Ackhem, What a lucky turn of event that's befallen you...

Proceed to lifting the keyboard and throwing it in the trash.

Now you can get a "REAL" mechanical keyboard.

Ducky shine 2 for back lite

Coolermaster quickfire RAPID, for tenkeyless

TT meka G1 for Full size standard.

I am quite serious, the Black widow has been one of the worst keyboards to come to market, followed by the K90 and K60

They share an identical flaw, they were all produced by the Manufacturer iONE, and are all of dubious quality.

OP, even if you never spilled soda on your keyboard, it was bound to break on you prematurely anyways in the short future, best make the right move and procure one of the excellent quality boards I mentioned above.

no just kidding but if you didn't clean it right away... hopefully you still can. search the forums here for keyboard cleaning advice, this comes up like once a week.

No you don't,

You've convinced yourself that you did, because you spent hard earned cash on it.

You're not defending the keyboard. You're actually defending your decision in buying it, and by extension you're defending your PRIDE.

It's ok man, we've all been here, and many of us including myself got d1cked over by Razer and the black widow...  >:D

This phenomenon is all to common here at the keyboard forum, and we witness it daily...

Trust us when we say, Black Widow is NOT WORTH FIXING.

Well the black widow makes a slightly higher pitch sound than many other cherry mx blue boards, because it is made with subpar material which causes a great deal of "flexing" where the keyboard bends in the middle a bit.

that is partly responsible..

But as far as the LOUD clack clack sound, ALL cherry mx switches will make that sound..

I don't see how you've determined that you will not have matching or equivalent tactile sound report when you haven't tried many other keyboards.

But it happens to be the case that all mx switches are relatively loud.

the MX blue will be slightly louder because it has that additional click.

the black widow uses MX blue.

Many here actually consider the black widow to have a "poor" quality clack sound, but that is "preference" as there is no technical measurement.

WE are confident that you'll be satisfied with ANY MX-blue keyboard.

The 3 keyboards I mentioned are all available in MX-blue switch type.

I'd replace it with an IBM model F. The keys make an ever better sound, and feel awesome besides.

Now, you have a few things with cleaning. I've never spilt anything in my keyboard, but you can try to dust the switches by pushing them down (Keycap OFF) and and blowing some compressed air. If some keys work, but others don't, you can replace those affected. Isopropyl alcohol can help clean most spills.

If the controller was damaged by spill, it could be shot. At this point, you can harvest the switches (and maybe the plate, too, for poker lovers) and sell them to raise enough money to buy another keyboard. I recommend the CMstorm QFR for tenkeyless. (if you don't have enough for a model F.) Another option (If you're good at soldering) is wire up all the switches to a teensy controller.

Seriously get a new keyboard... and next time you spill something on it unplug it and put it in a bag of rice, or any other techniques people suggest.

For the same price point as a (sh!ty) Black Widow, get this http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Storm-QuickFire-Rapid/dp/B0068INSUM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1348711951&sr=8-1&keywords=cm+storm+quickfire+rapid

Has the same type of switch, Cherry MX Blue, and will make a very similar noise that you are familiar with.

Or look around and spend a solid $100+ on a GOOD keyboard.

If some keys don't work at all, then the switches will need to be replaced and, depending on how many keys are affected, the time and cost of doing that might be more than the cost of a replacement (and, in some people's opinions, better quality) keyboard.

And after all that the keyboard might not sound quite the same.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
