It's really not that great, especially annoying now that the mainstream media has caught up.

If he hits 1billion before the end of the day that's definitely going to end the world, right?

That's stupid, I don't get the hype either.

Basically it works like this..

Most people are "not" the media standard of "good looking"

So when they watch TV or see Photos of the so called "Beautiful People", they feel denigrated and insecure...

Now, comes Gangnam Style where the Protagonist is an Ugly Fat Minority... So the audience for which thinks, Oh well, if "he" could be popular, and definitively "COOL", so could "I"...

Thus they can more easily put themselves into the moment.. and feel as if their Outlook is great despite what they "look like"..

This is a major component of why such a huge following exist, because it's a hero that's NOT exceedingly beautiful, one who you can get behind, and NOT be lost to...

Gosh, I forget how fortunate I am sometimes to be WASP, good looking, and relatively wealthy.

I don't get the deal with either. Firstly, I didn't even realise Gangnam Style was that big a deal. Maybe that's cause I'm not in the US, or maybe it's just because I don't have a TV and am oblivious to these things in general. It just seems like a fairly catchy pop song but nothing special and very mildly entertaining music video to me, nothing to get too worked up about either way.

I liked this version better though.

I will never stop loving this song. Even moreso because of crackpot lunatics that believe things like this.

It's along the lines of Friday, Thanksgiving, and Call Me Maybe. It's a somewhat catchy song (granted friday and thanksgiving are catchy in the wrong way) but people love it.  It's a shame because a lot of Psy's other stuff is quite good and not as uber poppy.  for instance it's art http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLEC422D53B7588DC7&feature=player_detailpage&v=1cKc1rkZwf8 is a pretty damn good song IMO and the video kinda depicts why people like him, he's definitely electric on stage and knows how to work a crowd.

I saw it when it had less than 300k views :D But that's because of SC2 and partly belonging to random bits of Korean culture.. And I can with absolute certainty say I follow the video for what it's about and the awesome music video. You should look up why Gangnam Style is edgy in South Korea which should include translations--rather interesting, all the goings-on with Psy.
