Thread for dota! (Now with our very own guild!)
« on: Sun, 05 May 2013, 17:02:21 »
I had been browsing the forum lately (mostly looking at pictures :P ) and noticed quite a few geekhackers play dota 2; as a loyal dota player for 6 year I can't resist to start a thread about it!

I saw a geekhack starcraft 2 tournament and got really excited (sadly too late to register). I am thinking of organizing one for dota if we have enough people. Why don't we start out by posting our favorite heroes and how diid we start playing dota?

I will start the fire:
Favorite heroes: Meepo, Invoker, Stormspirit, Lina, TA
How did I enter dota? My friend introduced it to me and I thought the idea that 5 people working together in a game is really cool.

2013-07-03: Now with our very own guild Geekhack! Add me (linziyi http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198046131144/) on steam to join the party!
Please include your id in the reply so that I know who you are on steam!

My favorite hero is Darkseer.
I got into Dota from friends introducing the game to me. I really enjoyed playing the original Dota on WC3, when Dota 2 came out, I did try it but I didn't really like it so I ended up not playing it.

I've been playing dota2 for about a year now and I love it. I'm still really bad at it though :/ Favourite heroes are probably nyx, timbersaw and leshrac. I really, really like leshrac.

Anyone up for a GH dota2 tournament in the summer?

We would need at least 10 people (lol of course), and maybe teams based on switches if we have enough people?

I started by playing a new custom map out for WC3 RoC called Defence of the Ancients, though I've rarely played during the TFT era. I pretty much stopped playing until my friends gave me an invite for Dota 2 and told me to start playing again with them.

Favourite Heroes: Terrorblade (But he's not in Dota 2 yet), Enigma and Chaos Knight
Keyboards: Topre HE0100 | REALFORCE 103UB & 104UB-DK | FILCO Majestouch 2 Ai Cherry MX Blue | CHERRY G84-4101SPAUS

I think dota is more about cooperation and sc2/war3 is more about individual (I don't think 2v2, 4v4 is as "big" as 1v1 in competitive scene?), but all of them are great games!

No coop needed for a snowballing TA mid.

I only play with friends, as i cant handle randoms and their unpredictable skill level.

I'd say i'm normal tier (the lowest one haha) but yeah, i have fun most games.

that's cuz 2v2 and 4v4 is inherently game breaking.. it's impossibly complex to balance..

in 1v1, the limitation of 1 player is enough such that the units can be vividly varied, because it's impossible to fully utilize them and macro simultaneously.

What's dota ???

Defense of the Ancients. Started out as a Warcraft 3 mod and became immensely popular. Now there is an entire genre of these games (MOBA)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/570/

There are quite a few heroes I enjoy playing. Timbersaw and Elder Titan are my current favorites.

I have been playing since 5.84c, but quit around 6.7x something for 1-2 years, and went for LoL until the release of Dota 2, have been playing Dota 2 ever since.

My favorite hero is Juggernaut. Main role is carry, second role is support.

I play support sometimes , only because I do not want to be the douche who plays nothing but carries regardless of team compostition. But I have to say, usually the carry role is by far the most rewarding for me. I am also very tempted to pick a carry in this game because, if there is one thing I am really good at, it is last hitting. I feel like when I pick a carry, this always helps me out a great deal. When I play support, it is like my only really good skill in this game has become relatively useless.

All roles need to know how to last hit, last hitting should not be a skill just for 1 position players it's a skill in MOBA in general. If you're a support and you have a free lane to farm you BETTER get those 5 last hits when you have a chance.

Knowing how to carry is far more advance then people think it is. The decision making, time management, map awareness, risk mangement have to be spot on, do not blame your supports if you get ganked because there's no ward there, if you watch pro games the top carry players never overpush and know when to hide in the fog when everyone is missing regardless if there are wards up.

Playing support is about being able to position and making stuff happen with nothing. I see too many 4/5 position players afraid of dying (ie Sandking not wanting to go in to epi stun because he will die), you have to understand it's your role to throw yourself at your enemy to make stuff happen, learn to position yourself in team fights and always understand if you died but your 1/2 position player got the kills its fine.

Best way to play better is always to play all roles, understand how each role works and that way you can play against it better, once you become a better support you will 100% be a better carry also

They pretty well lately to be quite honest, it was the first month or two when they added Kuroky and funn1k that they were playing bad. Today they drafted quite unusual in a bad way, I think they are still testing a lot of stuff from the new patch

They have by no means faded out. They played some of the best games I've ever seen recently. There was one game (I think in the G-1 league) where I stood up and clapped at their performance.

I honestly think it's between them and alliance to win TI3.

For day 2 in group stages

Quantic vs Fanatic
Quantic vs Alliance

In the playoff bracket
EG vs VP series
Mouz vs Alliance series

I think there are more but I know those ones are for sure good

Just built one, call Geekhack and GH for abbreviation! Add me (linziyi) to join!

**Geekhack power!**

Cool! I'll join when I get home :)
