Worst Food

OK, so what food do you hate the most?

I, for one, hate eating rats:

Spiders don't really taste all that good either.

So what kind of food do you hate?

Never eaten it, but my wife describes a Filippino delicacy known as 'balot' or 'balut' (pr. BAH-loot).

Balot

Quote from: wikipedia
A balut or balot is a developing duck embryo that is boiled alive and eaten in the shell. It is commonly sold as streetfood in the Philippines. They are common food in countries in Southeast Asia, such as Laos (khai look ໄຂ່ລູກ in Lao, Cambodia (pong tia koon ពងទាកូន in Cambodian)[1] and Vietnam (trứng vịt lộn or hột vịt lộn in Vietnamese). They are often served with beer.

(Attachment Link)

The Filipino and Malay word balut (balot) means "wrapped" – depending on pronunciation.

... no thank you. Unappetizing on a lot of levels.

I know a few people that like Balut.  They claim its a great delicacy but not for me!  They do eat it with lots of coarse salt and a squeeze of lime so I am not sure how much they taste.

As bad as that is I cant get past the smell of Durian Fruit!  Almost got past the smell enough to try Durian ice cream but just couldnt do it...

Lol Balut. You should try surströmming or hakarl. Hakarl for those who are not aware of it, is rotten shark that is then fermented for 1 to 2 months and hung out to dry for a couple of months.

Also Lutefisk, I can't get over the gelatinous consistency but A LOT of people eat it in Norway during christmas for some unkown reason.

The smell of surströmming is much worse than the taste. Fermentation has caused pressure inside the can, and you are supposed to open the can under water, or it could spray foul-smelling juice everywhere.

I have not tried hakar, but from what I have heard it should taste worse than surströmming.

I thought that that was China. In Japan, people have traditionally been vegetarians plus fish and seafood.

Just handling dead animals in Japan is traditionally considered very dirty. Even though modern Japanese eat meat, there is still an underclass in Japan called "Burakumin" (derogatory term: "Eta"), who are descendants of people who had worked with preparing dead animals for various crafts (leather, cat skins and sinews for musical instruments etc.) Japanese people don't like to talk about them much. It is like invisible racism.

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Been to Bangkok and tried crickets, locusts (yum), scorpions and one centipede.  Really nice when fried right with some sesame and soy sauce. The mrs hates them, won't even look at them when presented on a plate.

That would be the food of the future when there are close to 20 billion of us on this planet, what better way to feed the population than with insects or you can always choose soylent green  ;) .

True! Insects have a great feed-to-yield ratio, are very nutritious, and farming em is cheap and easy...
But I guess they will be shred and turned into "shaped meat" as this will raise the acceptance of the consumer.

Birds wrapped in seal skin left to ferment under rocks for 3 months or more, and then eaten raw. Yum.

I tried a lot of things. Insects, snails, larvae, century eggs, pig intestine, duck tongue, frog, cow lungs, and other things.  All of it was completely fine with me. But I would not touch this with a 10 foot pole lol.

I saw it in this documentary... where this guy got this really long butterfly net thing.. but it's to catch birds..

He's got a secret spot on the cliffs, and just waves the thing around.. and nabs like 100s of birds per day..

And then he puts them in the seal skin sack.. tie it up, rub oil around the opening.. and buries it under some rocks.

Everything is food. If it's on this Earth and won't kill you if you eat it, it's food to someone.

Trust me when you're lost out in a desert or jungle with no food for 3 weeks, the survivor standing next to you will suddenly look quite appetizing.

When it's cooked, stripped off the bone you can't tell the difference between pig meat or human (fact)  :thumb: .

If we are simply talking worst dish, I'd go with something the Eskimo's apparently used to eat during tough times: a meal of seal excrement and warmed blubber swirled together with some fresh blood. I saw it on an episode of Globe Trekker once, but for the life of me have never been able to find the clip anywhere else.

Casu marzu is also something I would never eat.  :llama:

OK, so what food do you hate the most?

I, for one, hate eating rats:

Spiders don't really taste all that good either.

So what kind of food do you hate?

OMG, I didn't know that people are eating RAT out there because RAT may consist of a lot serious diseases like plague. I think usually people eat farm mice instead because they eat corn or rice.

Some of that stuff is eaten because people are hungry and desperate. Not because they actually think it's 'part of their culture'.

Europeans were also eating tree bark at times. It's not called cuisine; it's called famine.

Kiviaq

Birds wrapped in seal skin left to ferment under rocks for 3 months or more, and then eaten raw. Yum.

I tried a lot of things. Insects, snails, larvae, century eggs, pig intestine, duck tongue, frog, cow lungs, and other things.  All of it was completely fine with me. But I would not touch this with a 10 foot pole lol.

I wouldn't mind trying it - with lots of Vodka.  You got to live a little otherwise you become like billions world-wide (obese), munching on fried burgers and chips.

I'll eat it - After consuming lots of vodka. Without being utterly drunk, there's no way to force me to eat something like that.

And I am reasonably adventurous in eating.

The sight of this even makes me sick.  I don't think anybody thinks of it as "food" though, so I don't know if it even qualifies for this thread.

I love McDonalds! They even have free wi-fi, so I can go on the Net with a different IP address when needed.
