I use one of these http://www.amazon.com/PUR-Advanced-Faucet-Filter-FM-3700B/dp/B0009CEKY6

Seems like it gets bad reviews but I've never had any issues with mine it is well over a year old.

i use brita, did a test a few years ago with this
water tester

really only good to see how much like "deposits" it filters out.

brita won out, also works better than the filters hooked up to the fridge that dispenses water/ice.

i tested water from 2 friends fridges with those filters, it was worse than bottle water.

i use 2 brita pitchers

this big one i keep in the fridge for always cold water
brita gallon pitcher

I have this one--http://amzn.com/B00IK5A4U8

It's not as convenient as the one that connects directly to a faucet, and required quite a bit of fridge real estate, but I love the clean tasting water it produces.  It's led me to drinking 2x as much water as I used to since I don't like drinking from the tap.  The filters in it last for ~2 months, but they're not too expensive to replace.

Used to use a brita pitcher but stopped using it because a ton of black specks would collect where you put water in it. They would swirl around as you added water.

Figured no big deal since they were BEFORE the filter. But occasionally one would make it into my glass somehow? & I've never had black specks straight from the tap... so it seemed pointless to even use.

Black specks like the size of like a small grain of sand. Dunno if its normal or whatever but they were making it into my glass so **** that.

black specks? is this the carbon from the filter? did you flush your initial filter effectively?

you have to soak a new filter in water for 10mins to let all the dry carbon and stuff settle in.

then do 2 full pitchers of water, either throw the water away or use it for plants.

if it's black mold, thats a different issue.

Always followed 'break in' instructions. & yeah that's the first thing that came to mind was carbon.

It was definitely not mold. Like I said a bunch of specks would swirl from the filters intake holes as you poured water in from the top.

& even half way through the life-span of the filer you could get a black speck or 2 in your glass. Got tired of checking every glass of water for black specks.

any one try one of these hookups    the only problem I see is the 0.5 gal / minute flow rate.. that's molasses speed..

You should just get a reverse osmosis system and call it a day.

Hahahaha.  Distillation would help remove some (most?) particulates, but I don't think it would do much else.  :P  Maybe it could help if you have incredibly impure water.

It would help raise your utility bill...   :))

The water in the NWT is so good, so good. Better than bottled water.

The faucet is from where I'm basing this. Our water heater element don't calcify and corrode even! It's nice, at least where I'm at.

It and the incredible skyscape, night sky/Aurora Borealis, and fresh air are all I miss the school year when we're away from here.

i'd get the blue and black specks in the area that the water is poured in, never where it came out, pretty sure i've gone through at least 50 brita filters in 10 years. was the "fit" where you put the filter in the pitcher tight? i make sure to hulk slam that filter in place, not just dropping it in.

I've been reading up..  and it says.. the brita /pur /   filters  only really produce a better tasting water, instead of actually filtering out the pollutants..

now, I realize this may in fact be propaganda of the  installation filter people..

It uses a big activated charcoal filter, they couldn't possibly claim activated charcoal doesn't filter things because that's just science. Are they saying science is wrong?

they're not claiming it doesn't filter ANYTHING AT ALL..   but it doesn't do as thorough a job as one's lead to believe..

Tap water "should" be good already. Brita will effectively mostly improve the taste. I got use to the taste of filtered water and can only drink tap water if I am doing exercise.

I have a Brita at home and it works very well and give water comparable to what you would buy from a water dispenser thing. And the minerals in the water are GOOD for your health anyway.
