iOS 8

I saw Dustin's screenshot so I know he's on iOS 8. I have just upgraded. It's kinda meh to me at the moment. And I should be jumping with joy on new keyboards (ha ha!) but I am paranoid about key logger. Any comment/experience?

Other thsn the keyboard update ios 8 makes my iPhone 5 run a lot slower. There is now noticeable lag when switching apps and opening the task manager :/

I like my predictive too much, but if what Baldgye says is true, I won't be upgrading as I've only got a 5 as well.

Predictive is a new feature in iOS 8. Every time you type something, iOS 8 gives you 3 choices which it predicts from the characters that you type.

What you meant is Auto-correct, I think. So I turned predictive off, but keep auto correct on.

Oh, like a Samsung? =/ Yeah, I might try it out for a bit but if it doesn't adapt too well then I may just switch it off.

Or you know.. just use a PC, with WINDOWZ...  FASTTTTTTTT

I've found that there is a correlation between people who have slow desktops, and avid phone use..

These people have such bogged down machines that it "feels" more convenient  or just as convenient for them to use their phone..

Whereas, someone with a Proper desktop, 4.5ghz+ on cpu 2.1ghz on memory,  tend to gravitate towards Windowz.

I'm not bashing the phone.. I just find it silly people talking about how slow or fast their phones are...  while the PC does everything better, with no squinting or neck pain.

I hear that argument too... "I DEPEND on my phone"

I rarely see this to be the case though..   most geeks avoid places without wifi, in general.. and regardless,  their jobs would put them somewhere with Computers...

So at what POINT and how often do you DEPEND on your phone's SPEED...

you got phone calls, txt, and email...  that's all the phone really needs to reliably do, and no amount of processing power tangibly do those simple tasks much faster.

so, it's always better to do other computer tasks @ home...   instead of buying $800 handheld calculators..

you could pull $700 out of that and upgrade your PC...

So the texting (don't forget the amount of typing in Whatsapp) and the email (and Tapatalk, which I spent a lot of time on) is now being slowed down because of that damn predictive text in iOS 8. Which is the reason all of us are currently complaining. So you type like you would do in iOS 7 but the text appears a sub micro second later. It does drive one up the wall.

As for the general feel of the phone, if it lags, it can get irritating. Have you ever used a old phone running a modern OS, say a iPhone 4 running iOS 7? You will know what I mean - even simple stuff like phone calls, text and email can get annoying.

I agree that fast phones are fast..   but they do not appreciably increase your happiness.. because their improved capability does not readily translate into time saving..

but sitting down at a PC... Everything comes into focus... Job done..

MW is not here because Windows 98 and IE 6 do not run on smart phones.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I'm running it on my iphone 5 and have definitely not noticed any decrease in performance in fact somethings feel a little snappier. It was a little sluggish at first but apparently it does some indexing or something which can slow things a bit when you first get going. The biggest improvement for me is opening up the system a bit to third parties, it was very annoying living in Apple's little app silos. At least now it's possible to move things between apps.

I have to say it runs faster, but it's alot less 'smooth'. App's snap open or snap close, when they used to kinda slowly pop open. I get random lagg pretty constantly and the app switch thing dsnt seem as fast as before.

But yeah, having it being more open is a huge plus though nothing that I've used has really made much use of that... other than awesome new keyboards, like Swiftkey. Though Apple's implementation of how to manage many keyboards isn't great :/

I like my predictive too much, but if what Baldgye says is true, I won't be upgrading as I've only got a 5 as well.

If you text and browse the web as much as I do on your phone I would recommend the upgrade, simply so you can get a better keyboard. Swiftkey is so much better that the stock iOS keyboard. I struggle so much to type on such a narrow screen and Swiftkey is instantly better.

Yeah, I uninstalled Swiftkey pretty quick. But I have hope for future keyboard related apps (still no Colemak, not that it matters for your thumbs :p )

Also iOS 8 is pretty slow on the 4S, but I have a 6 inbound to replace it.

I don't know.. tbh it having access to what you type isn't that big of a deal as it simply helps it learn what you type.. as well as rude words. I turned if on with all other keyboards turned off and had problems as iOS 8 dsn't actually use your new keyboard in the new features, like replying in notifications etc etc etc... which makes me think, it dsn't really have that much info on you that would be useful

Personally I would upgrade, I don't know of any speed tweaks but there is alot less of the slow closing animations of apps...

Thank god I god rid of predictive text, my phone is a tad better now.. I want iOS7 back though. Phones slow as ****. Ill never upgrade my iPad mini from iOS6!!!

Jailbroken iPhone 5 with iOS 6.1 here with no intention what-so-ever to upgrade to 7 or 8. I'm ready to upgrade my device to something but I don't know what yet, maybe I'll make a move when I see what the Nexus 6 looks like.

I got to play with the iPhone 6 today and was pretty underwhelmed. The phone's build quality is phenomenal but I just didn't like iOS 8. I've always been a big fan the iPhone and iOS but that changed dramatically with iOS 7 ...

I'd be with you, if it wasn't for the little draw thing (you swipe up to get)... that changed iOS 7 to a must have for me (I ran iOS 6 jailbroken like a mother****er)

I love iOS 6 but after using iOS 7 for a while, 6 looked very old and vintage. We gotta move on with times my friends!

Yeah, for real. My mobile banking app kept using the iOS6 keyboard for about nine months after the update and it looked really dated compared to iOS7 everywhere else.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Any good widgets recommendations? I kinda like Wgdt which is a collection of cool widgets such as a timezone and currency converter. Very useful!

Wait iOS 8 has widgets now? A bit late to the party?

Seriously though, before Apple tried to specifically not to be like Android - they stuck with the smaller screens (for a reason!
More
- not that I dislike bigger screens), didn't allow widgets and basically no customization. Now suddenly they make the iPhones bigger, allow widgets, custom keyboards, etc... Why the sudden change? Cause Steve Jobs is no more in charge?

I believe the simple answer is that they listened to their customers? Sure - probably Jobs is too stuck up to listen to customers but I think Cook is wiser in this case.

Not sure if that was a wise decision. Now the iPhones have to really compete against Android and Windows phones. Like for example for me, when I see the iPhone 6 I would have no reason to buy it. My Nexus 4 is 2 years old now, cost half the money, has a screen as big as it with a tad lower resolution (326ppi vs 318ppi) and twice as much RAM. The camera on the iPhone is probably better and maybe it has more memory but that's not something that would convince me.

Sure those people who had iPhones all the time will probably buy them again. But I'm not sure if you could convince an Android user.
