Dirty Bomb is pretty great, F2P game on steam, still in open beta, so a few bugs and unreleased mercs, but it is pretty fun.

I downloaded Dwarf Fortress. Haven't tried it yet, not sure if I'm going to. But it totally seems like the kind of game I'd be into, if not for the fact that it sucks you in and eats up all your time.

Yeah, a game has to allow me to put more than 20 hours into it before I'll consider spending $60 on it.  Even then I have a hard time because I need to know the game is actually worth it.  A lot of developers are pricing there games out for someone like me.

Also, there is absolutely no valid reason to charge the same price for a digital copy of a game for your PC as you would for a console version.  Consider it a silent protest for me to wait for the prices to drop to something reasonable.

I mean if I have the money, nicely priced indies I will fork up their full price, as it's usually, $15-$30.  :)

Yeah agreed. I work making 'AAA' games and I would not be paying the prices we charge for the product, physical copy or digital. One day when I'm in charge...  ;)

If I hate it, I'm suing you for the cost of the game since you touted it so highly,.

I'm thinking I'll pick up MGS5 when it goes on sale, but after I've upgraded my GPU to something like a 950/60/70. Not sure which one yet evidently.

ur gonna want the 980 or 980 TI..

the 950 isn't even a real GPU,
the 960, you might as well get a 670 or 680 used, since it's the same darn thing.

the 970 is fast and new, but it's got that screw-ee ram issue

the used 980 is where the best performance per dollar is right now (excluding the 970 because of the ram issue). the Ti is a bit towards luxury and mostly unnecessary, because it's STILL not fast enough as a single GPU to run the highest settings, they do this on purpose so they can sell you 2 cards.

you can look out for 780 780ti s  as well, buhhhhhhhh they're not super common at good prices.

Oh, whoops

SO much money though! They're like $700AUD :blank: I think I need to lay down for a while and think this through

Picked up Shadows of Mordor - didn't realize it would take up a whopping 54gb when all updated.
So between that and GTAV, those two take up half the space on my SSD. Goddammit  >:D

Depending on what you have already inside your rig will depend on the graphics card you will want to get. With the right PSU, CPU, and GTX 970 you can run MGS5 at 1080p on High Settings and still get 60fps.

What do you currently have?

Not too sure actually, nothing spectacular though. I'm on my way to uni now, but I'll check in a few hours when I get home.

My current GPU is trash which is why I'm looking to upgrade. For example, rocket league can't get a consistent >45 FPS at low-ish settings. So I figured why not get something that'll last.

But I'm rambling now... I'll get back to you soon!

Like others said, if you're on a 1080p monitor, a 970 will be more than enough for MGSV :) My 970 had no problem maxxing out any games at 1080p, it was only until I started playing certain things in 1440p that I ended up getting a 980ti. But for 1080? 970 is a killer card and an amazing price.

PSU won't make any difference unless it's a POS.

I'm running a 3570k and 7950 at 1440p and it's killing MGSV.

Maybe once we get some new cards 20nm/16nm, we can finally see 4k as a more reasonable resolution for gaming, where at least powerful single card solutions can actually run games @60fps...

Alright so I'm running an i7-2600K on a Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3R, GT 740, 8GB of G.Skill Ripjaws RAM (DDR3, I think), some old-ish Coolermaster 650W PSU. Also a 1TB HDD and 500GB SSD. Monitor is an Acer V223HQV, if that helps at all.

Wow typing that out made realise how painfully average my PC is

I would go for a new PSU, but even if you don't, I believe a 970 could work with a 650w PSU.. I guess it depends on the quality of the PSU itself.. but my friend is using his 970 with a 650w kinda oldish PSU and running MGSV and every other game perfect :) Your PC is really not that bad at all. It's only been a year since I upgraded to my 4690K, 16GB DDR3, 970 and now 980ti. I was still running my Q6600, 8GB DDR2 RAM, and a 650ti lol. THAT was bad.. that system aged horribly. Wow, lagging on terraria must have hurt. I think I might just hold off and save up for a little bit longer and upgrade my PSU, I haven't got a new one in years anyways. Thanks for the advice everyone!

I can not get my 4690K above 4.5GHz stable :'( I barely had to raise the voltage on mine to get it to 4.5, and I hate having to raise voltages too much.. so I never pushed it much further. Although I'm pretty content with 4.5... but man I really wanted to try for 4.7! My Q6600 was clocked from 2.6GHz to 3.2GHz the entire time I had it, on air.. which was good. I have an AIO water cooler on my 4690K but still can't push it anymore :'(

From my limited understanding having insane GHz's isn't all that great anyway, it's better to have a newer faster chip than an older one thats over-clocked to ****.

It's like spending retarded money on a top end i7 when a mid range i5 will actually be just as good (for gaming)...

Just wish they made them run cooler, is all other than that I don't mind them.

Did you follow the OVerclocking guide over at OCN..  there's ALOT more to tweak outside of just Vcore.

From my limited understanding having insane GHz's isn't all that great anyway, it's better to have a newer faster chip than an older one thats over-clocked to ****.

It's like spending retarded money on a top end i7 when a mid range i5 will actually be just as good (for gaming)...

The used to be the case in 2010....   after sandybridge came out,  The necessity to overclock became grave..

It greatly greatly influences the Minimum frames persecond..  whereas on the 3.x ghz setups, you get way more frame-dips.

Oh of course :) I am quite comfortable with overclocking and changing everything in the BIOS, but the only thing I hate bringing up too high is the vcore itself. I generally go for the highest OC I can get stable without raising the vcore almost at all. On the Q6600, I would be able to get to 3.0GHz without a change in vcore. My 4690K barely has a bump in it, to go any higher than 4.5 I would have to bump that up more.

Yup that's true :) Every time someone comes to me with questions about building a new gaming computer, they ALWAYS want to get an i7.. but I tell them that it's not worth it for gaming. Instead, spend that extra money on a better GPU, or an SSD even.

I used to lag playing Terraria on that thing!

Wow, lagging on terraria must have hurt. I think I might just hold off and save up for a little bit longer and upgrade my PSU, I haven't got a new one in years anyways. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Ehh it's not that bad just the video card, psu might want changing but will run any of the 950/60 cards

It depends..  If you're @ 4.7ghz or above..  You're still Cool..

But if you're below that..  then that's too lowly for a Geekhacker..

I'll see myself out :-[

With your current setup all you need is a PSU that has a good single 12v rail. Something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139056

With that and a 970 you'll be set up for a while and don't worry to much about your CPU clock speed. I'm running an i5-3570k at stock speeds and I've been able to run every game at high settings so far. Overclocking reminds me of the old "Home Improvement" TV series. MORE POWER isn't necessary all the time and since Intel CPU's run great at stock speeds I've never felt the need to overclock.

Good luck with your search though!

Just bought Shadow of Mordor for £12. I'm stoked to play it once I've finished Mad Max, but I've only been able to put like 16 hours into it since I bought it. It's fun though.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I started playing Diablo 3 again; the new season is fun so far. GTA is also tons of fun with friends. I also play Smite now and then. Someone on Skype called me a hipster for playing Smite... does anyone else play Smite? :blank:

I want to start up Diablo 3 again, but I don't know how much fun it will be without friends playing this time lol. I wanted to try out Smite, but reeeeally want to get back into Heroes of the Storm again.. I was insanely into it until the expansion for Final Fantasy XIV came out in June. Haven't played since the Butcher update.. and since they changed my favorite hero, Brightwing. HotS is really the only MOBA I've liked so far. For some reason, LoL made me rage SO BAD that I could never get into it. But HotS didn't do that to me.

Been playing X-Com the last couple of weeks. Picked it up for peanuts in a Steam sale. I haven't played a tactical turn based game since Shining Force 2 on the Mega Drive and it's been a blast. Just have the last mission to do. I'd like to have a go at something a bit more in depth next time (the small squad size and the limited inventory feels like of stunted) but with a small baby I don't know if I have the time to dedicate to such a game!

I've played a couple of hours of Far Cry: Blood Dragon. The writing is funny and it looks great but the gameplay isn't exactly grabbing me. I'm a bit burnt out on single player FPS games at this point in my life I'd rather go play Half Life 1 or Quake 2 at this stage.

Played about 8 hours of Hotline Miami 2 so far. It's absolutely brilliant. So much more difficult than the first game though! It's hard work. I lost all my progress in a reformat as well so I may end up putting this one on the long finger.

I played through to level 30 in 'beta', haven't really properly played it since then though. I relapse every few months and I get reminded why I don't really like MOBAs :( so much time investment and so often very toxic makes it hard for me to have fun!

In other news, I'm just sticking to rocket league for now, until I can upgrade my PC at least.

Been finally playing Dark Souls 2: SotFS after wanting to since it was released. Very frustrating at times, but also incredibly fun and so much customization for weapons and builds, I love it. I can't wait for Dark Souls 3.

HELL YES <3 My favorite series!! :) I love DS II. SotFS has been frustrating me but that's why we play right? Haha
