Took a typing test today...
« on: Tue, 26 January 2016, 00:48:53 »
They had a ****ty dell rubberdome that I had to type on. Was so tempted to run out to the car and grab my Poker II w/ clears but then they probably think I was cheating or something.

TP4 does indeed have a good guide for anyone who wants to increase their speed. Just know that it takes a long time to see results

Ah, yes,   let me explain this to the n0vice folks.

Essentially, there are 2 major influences of testing variables on speed results.

-- Logical order of words,  (sentences vs random order)

-- Commonality of words, (SUBDERMATOGLYPHIC, you won't have good muscle memory of this word, unlikely)

This creates 4 possible testing situations..

Logical + common    (fastest, speed 1)   (typracer)
Logical + uncommon  (speed 2)             (medical transcribers)
Unlogical + common  (speed 2)               (10 fast fingers)
Unlogitcal + uncommon (speed 3)           (Random strings of characters, Sean Wrona speed is ~160)

The difference between the 2x  (Speed 2)   is highly context dependent and will vary greatly from person to person.. so we can't generalize them.

However, what we can say, is that speed 1 is most likely  faster for most people,  while speed 3 is the slowest..

Thanks the the explanation. I scored quite a bit lower on my test than on typeracer (85 compared to my typeracer all time average which is 100.271, with 693 races).

This explains why! Some other factors that may have contributed to it was a ****ty keyboard, typing a little slower as not to make mistakes and being more accurate.

Edit: Also the test was 5 minutes (a marathon) based to the typeracer burst tests which are sometimes only 30 seconds (for the shorter passages)

I stay around ~110 normally. I'm not really interested in trying to increase it anymore. I don't really care how much I can type copying words off a screen, when it comes to actually type it's more that my brain is what holds up my speed because I need to think of the sentence that I want to create.

But... But... bragging rights!

I have a very unconventional way of typing (most keys are hit with my left hand) and am too lazy to change my methods because it will mean slowing down and relearning everything );

When I try to get super fast is when my hands start to leave the keyboard and then I end up making mistakes. Type typing is definitely the way to go, first time I ever learned to type the proper way was back in like 4th grade or something.

Um..... it depends on what you mean by hitting most keys with your left hand..

Left hand keys account for the majority of the letters in english.. but if you're hitting right hand letters with your left hand..  then that could be a problem later on when you're up through 140..
