Hrrrrrrrrrm....  the SRGB tone curve doesn't look as good as the Gamma 2.2 tone curve..   .. Well.. it's actually pretty close but G2.2 is darker around black.. more depth-y.

Oh man.. Tough Decisions..

Choices:

4:3/5:4 aspect,  compressible to 16:9

1024x768  85hz - low resolution, low flash

1280x1024 60hz - max total resolution, high flash

16:9 aspect

1280x720  75hz - med resolution, medium flash

1366x768  60hz - max horizontal resolution, high flash

Depends how susceptible you are to it. Lower hz always gave me headaches when I had a CRT (which I only later found was the cause).

I've found that low hz is a problem with static images..

When watching moving films, it's been mostly ok..

I don't intend to waste any phosphor browsing the web..

This will be a strict Movie monitor. Watched Venom on it today, so dark..

Calibrated my even older Delta DC-770 yesterday, from 1998..

This one's way better than my newer envision cheapee 2003ish

The DC-770 has 97% srgb gamut, 110cd @ 45% , vs envision, 93% srgb, 110 @ 30%

Fixed another Basement CRT.

Emachine 786n

Wouldn't turn on..  with some proding, determined main p0wr cap gone dry.

It's a 400v 150uf..   Tp4 doesn't just have these layn' round..

Got a bunch of 200v caps from old PSU..  Popped one in,  Checked the voltz on the cap, goes up to 160v when running..

It works, but obviously that margin is small..   it'd cost $10 though to buy new caps..

Thoughts.. ??

Just live on the Edge... or spend $10,

Remember folks, TP4 just spent $10 on windows 10..  Tp4 not made of moneys..

Hrrrrmm, upon m0ar xamin removed capacitor,  it's Not thoroughly broken...

3 Possibilities.

:: Something down the line now has enough resistance such that 150uf won't start the beam-gun.

:: The Capacitor spec has deviated too far, ESR/ Capacitance.

:: Both the down-line component degradation in-Conjunction with capacitor deviation result in non-start..

This seems reasonable, because the 200v replacement cap is 830uf (psu pulled) vs the 150uf of 400v (old cap).

OMG,  it just looks so... RIGHT. !!!

This is very much a NEW experience.

It's the combination of 1080p video material
+ Modern video processor
+ Affordable 3Dimension color correction
+ High quality Madvr video scaling
+ CRT (Near perfect Black point, and Motion Clarity)

These items were not available in this combination (average consumer) until quite recently.

Assuming in the mastering studio, they're using super high quality reference monitors.. an AT HOME crt is the closest thing you can get,  short of shelling out $1200 for OLED.

EVEN then,  OLED simply does not have the motion clarity of CRT.

OLED is extremely blurry when the pictures moves.

On the flat panel side, perhaps the best compromise is a gsync/freesync VA-panel which has blur-reduction..

But why bother, when you can get a CRT for $15-30

Anime really should be xperienced on CRT...

Alot of the older animes especially were made with effects and transitions for CRT in mind..

In various scenes, certain special effects (flashes/explosions) and pan rates are not very suitable to LCD, because of motion blur, slow response time.

CRT has no such limitations. It is the fastest thing out there.

Recommend calibrating to 80cd whites in a 30% white patch.

Many CRTs can get much brighter, but that's not necessarily desirable, because CRT reds at high brightness will bloom a bit, and look pale/greenish/brownish.

The advantage is clear,  if you look at the black patches in these photos, they look like HOLES in the screen, extremely deep.

OLED can achieve even deeper blacks, but for that one advantage, the cost to the rest of the visual experience is significant motion blur..

Glad to see someone else here realizes the unquestionable superiority of CRT displays.

I have 4 CRT monitors sitting on my desk that I use daily. I have a Silicon Graphics / Sony GDM-5411 and an Iiyama Vision Master 17 as my main PC displays, and a Sony PVM-20M2E and Ikegami VCM-141H for DVD/VHS/PS2/Sega Genesis. All of them need calibrated, and the SGI could use a recap and convergence strip adjustment.

But then I recall, this stuff puts out lotza radiation..

Time Travel... !!

Similar to record players, this is something of an Analog Experience.

However, UNLIKE records which actually have very bad sound fidelity..

Analog CRT has fidelity and repro qualities SUPERIOR to even the most advanced modern displays..

Other than 'murica portraying the Irish as persistently drunk potato eaters, :D ..  Good film, slice of life, NOT over-sexualized.

Looks really good-n-classical on CRT.

CRT edge bleed.

Now, technically, the crt representation is data incorrect.

However, CRT-Enthusiasts tout this Edge-Bleed Effect as a native edge softening/ anti-aliasing.

The image data are 3 solid color boxes of the 255 primaries

CRT,    notice there's a slight crossover in color pixels between color edges. A soft edge blend, a living analog image

216747-0

LCD,   hard edges, no color crossover, (very stern, but technically sharper)

All About Eve 1950, Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, (Early) Marilyn Monroe.

This film draws from live-plays, relies on dialog, body // facial gestures.

At this point in time, actresses had to do more than be pretty. Overall, they're Quite a bit Older than actresses we'd see today for these roles.

Even on the soft-film + worse cameras, at 27yr old Anne Baxter, looks obachan. If we shot a 27yr old with today's Arri /Dragon, they'd look way way too old.

216773-0

216775-1

1950 Marilyn Monroe, age 24, IMHO, she looks better here in B/W, later on in COLOR, the exaggerated red-lip color she always had really distorted her facial balance. It's much better here on old tech.

In the movie, she plays a criminal psychologist.

These are considered big monitors for 1995, clearly sony sponsored dis'film.

Used to work with a guy that collected raduoactive glass wares. Your lead does nit scare me. Although the lead is probebly more naughty on the old macromolecules.

Some times I have a pang of remorse for giving away my Metz 80cm 16:9 (Phillips tube).
Unfortunately it had fallen behind the times for out of the box features and was just too big to be able to ‘tuck away in the corner’ until another time.
 :( :( :(
The only BS I
want to hear is
from a Model M:

Retro shop, buy it back !

Am reminded of the story about a poor mother under duress of a callous husband to give up on their child due to poverty. That husband passed away not long after, and the mother married a wealthier man, yet she could not be happy in this personal luck, as she only thinks about the child she's lost.

If anyone is -interested- in buying the LEXX dvd sets. Don't, because they're terrible quality. Not just the case of low bitrate, the master/ color grading, everything is pretty awful..

Definitely WAIT for a Remastered-collection on this one.

Anime on CRT,  using 2.8 Gamma (instead of 2.4),   very deep color, minimal crush.

Lowering gamma really improves the washout from CRT blooming.
