The NFL isn't dying. Ratings may be down but the most valuable sports teams in the world is still the Dallas Cowboys, that aint changing any time soon.

Esports won't take over as the crossover of viewers is *probably* less than 10%.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

The middle class is very visible.

This is the class educated enough to understand, head injury = bad, PERIOD.

It is already very clear that the middle class is withdrawing their children from the sport.

That sets a tone..

Only the Poor and the Idiots keep running their heads against the wall..

The death of NFL is inevitable..   Simply due to the mechanics of the game..

How many of the black kids getting football scholarships are coming through from middle class backgrounds? The "poor and the idiots" are probably 75% of the NFL's player base.

There will always be plenty of kids coming through the system who's only way out is sports. Just because middle class kids aren't playing in little league, doesn't mean a lot.

Rules are being put in place to reduce head injuries and the league is taking it very seriously. I can see more money flooding into protection instead of changing the rules of the game.

I think you greatly overestimate the middle class's ability to think critically and that they would stop watching football over something like head injuries.  Will the NFL die out?  Absolutely, but it's not something that will be happening in the next 20 years or so.

That's not the point,

It's going out of fashion..

Middle class people say, oh i don't want my kids to play it..  WHY NOT,  because head injury..

Now, that line of reasoning trickles down, and such negative cast may be irreversible.

Well if you think they don't want to watch violence, I'm sure most people would be more likely to move to the NBA/NHL/MLB before watching esports.

If anything, I think people will always want to go somewhere and watch something. Yeah of course you have large tournaments that are in big stadiums, but there's nothing like the weekly or three times weekly fixtures across the country you can go and watch with a few thousand other people in esports, and I don't think there could possibly be scale for that.

Sports is an OUTSIDE thing..

In my neighborhood, over the years, summertime went from noisy high pitch shrieks to DEAD SILENCE..

There is no one playing ANYTHING outside..

Now these kids grow up.. they're not going to push their kids to play sports, the father plays diabro, mother plays facebook/pinterest, kid plays diabro and facebook..

WHY OUTSIDE..  ??

Competitive gaming is NOT A ****ING SPORT.

And besides, many professional sports players are from low income areas where becoming great at a sport is one of the few routs to fame and success. And those are not the people who have overprotective helicopter parents who coddle their inept incompetent sheltered children.

There's no hard scientifically precise limiter on what is and is not -- A Sport --.

Gaming is a sport if enough people SAY IT IS..

Rotting milk isn't food, but enough people started eating cheese, and now it is a food.

There's no reason to get hung up on the back and forth of definition, no one knows for sure if it will happen, but clearly TODAY, we have a good lean towards YES..

As for drawing players from -the poor-.. Yea.. that's the case with most sports..  similar to the dearth of fast-food employees in rich neighborhoods.

It won't die from a lack of Meat Input,  It will die from the loss of perceived Glory..

What is so great, about being brain damaged, at ANY PRICE....

Rugby has two rulesets League and Union with the latter being arguably safer. They're tweaking both at the moment to reduce the amount of concussions. The NFL have tweaked their rules plenty of times I'm sure they can moderate things a little better.

I'm slightly surprised eSports is such a big thing now. I mean, I understand the appeal of watching people play videogames, but I'm not going to watch a Counter Strike tournament for more than 30 minutes.

It comes down to how much you've dabbled in the sport yourself.

And then there's the whole casino scene which has always been the primary driver behind sports for adult viewership.

and yet clearly that guy paid for some tickets

i won't disagree, it's boring 60% of the time

but you take the feeling of watching an inside the park homer or a grand slam, and it will never stack up to an amazing touchdown

I bet if you ask younger kids today what a homer or grand slam is, they might not know..

But, they'd probably know what a mega-kill or dominating is..

90% of fishing is getting drunk on a canoe

crabbing is so much more work in comparison

although, the rewards for crabbing are much greater than that of fishing, 95% of the time

This sport is like Flat keyboards.

It's just not ergonomic.

It can not be fix, without simply NOT being football anymore..

The core aspect of the game involves creating physical head on collisions.

< it can't be fixed >

People are too tribal currently, for that switch. Maybe in a few years I'd guess. But not necessarily cause it's dangerous, but it might be seen as "not hip".
