iMav's account was registered 10 years ago today, so I guess that makes today the 10th anniversary!

Time flies when you're having fun! I have been here 2/3 of that time.

When I joined, I had an original worn but quite serviceable Dell AT101W that I got new with a Dell system in 1997, a Northgate Omnikey of some sort with a couple of dead keys, and an IBM Model F XT with a Hagstrom in a translucent plastic kitchen storage box (that Ripster called "ghetto" when I posted a photo of it).

But my daily driver was still a Compaq SK-2800 (with media keys) that I had gotten with a Compaq system in the early-2000s.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

Happy birthday GH!

Thank you iMav!

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Maybe all the folks that dropped their (monetary) support for GH could help us out...in honor of our 10th anniversary.  LOL

I'd love to do giveaways and so forth...but the honest truth is...despite all the money that is made from "vendors" and so forth on GH...I take a loss every month to keep this community up and running.

To be honest I'd be much more inclined to donate if these forums were actually maintained. Letting SSL lapse, inactive mods/admins, super outdated wiki software, >> DEALS <<, Vendors who shouldn't be vendors in the first place, subforums for people who haven't been active in years, the list goes on.

Do you not think all of those things are an effect of, and not a cause of, lack of donations?

Maybe letting SSL lapse as renewing SSL certs cost money, however I don't see a correlation between donating money and mods/admins starting to become active, seeing as they're not paid. Wiki software updates are free, and it doesn't cost money to clean up vendors and subforums.

Money problems can make people lose interest.  I know if I was underwater like that and running this site, it wouldn't exist anymore.  Show interest and financial support, and perhaps it would be supported better.

I want to agree, but it basically would be me saying "I'll donate if you fix everything I don't like".

However, I agree that the vendor/subforums need refreshing, and also inactive mods/admins. I don't think the mods/admins have changed since I've been on geekhack? New faces would be nice to have, and stuff would probably get done quicker.

Either way, I'll make sure to get a donation in after my next sale, as I'm guilty of using the website to host my buys.

Still think we need a way to recognize those that donate.  If iMav's still propping the site up out of his pocket, then just relying on that warm fuzzy feeling to drive donations obviously isn't working.  Giving people the chance to publicly stroke their own ego may encourage more donations.

I'm pretty sure I've got an automatic donation thingy going atm.
Am happily supporting this site, as I use it A LOT. :-*

If you want some mort of recognition then you can always put it in as your personal text. I don't think people should be given any special privileges for donating as you are then just turning it into a club like DT. Maybe we could have an entry on someone's Ultimate Profile like "Geekhack supporter since:" but anything else is unneccesary IMO

I've just started a bronze level pledge, hopefully I can ramp it up in the future.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

There is a "group" for Destiny supporters - you can still seel teh custom icon under some users' names.

Maybe something similar?

Although we don't want to call people out for NOT donating, as not everyone is in a position to do so.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect.
