This genuinely looks like it too, though.
The taste's nondescript nature doesn't help it either. The good ones use an overpowering amount of garlic just to give it some taste at all, but other than that it just tastes of pure carbohydrate paste that's passed through the digestive system of another organism already, but without the pleasant taste of actual sugar.
To me hummus is the poster child of how not to do vegetarian/vegan food. It's more than possible to make very tasty vegetarian and vegan food, but hummus always felt like the short straw to me.
