Gave up soda a couple years back, but every now and then I like to splurge on some of that good-good

Lemonade or tonic (quinine) water.

And I am astonished to see my mother's favorite (Fanta Grape) and my brother's favorite (Cheerwine) from years ago at the top of the list. I didn't really know that they made either of those any more.

PS - "soda" is so Yankee. In the South, any soft drink is a "coke"
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”

You'd be surprised how many old school sodas are still being produced (albeit in small quantities) for niche import stores or candy shops. I worked at a retail store that specialized in import foods and we always  had a huge selection of sodas I had never heard of, but they had apparently been around since the turn of the century.

We always had cases of "Moxie" that almost never sold and after tasting it I understood why, but they are still produced regularly so somebody must like it.

My Physics prof loved that stuff. Had it in class nearly every day. I can't even remember what it tastes like now but it wasn't something I liked enough to buy more than one.

I like Coke but I can't drink it straight. I have to thin it out with a little bourbon.

The official soft drink of Maine. I agree, it's nothing to write home about, but some people here love it.

I'm more of a seltzer person now. Anything else is wayyyyyy too sweet.

Try a few generic store brand pineapple sodas too..  They're typically all pretty darn good..

The only bad one i've tried I bought at an indian grocery store..

Even the dollar store ones taste great.

Coca Cola Zero Sugar. Previously Coca Cola Zero, which was pretty much Zero Sugar but with a little bit less of a coca cola taste. My favorite would be a tie between Coca Cola and Pepsi, but calories and carbs...

My favourite soda was a local blackcurrant soda that I have not found for many years.

BTW. Grape flavour exists almost only in countries that don't have blackcurrant ... No really. Blackcurrant became illegal to grow in the US because it was a carrier for a disease that affected some domestic plants. Then brands substituted it with grape.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Thankfully it's the national drink of Scotland (where the rest of the world uses Coke as the default soda/mixer they use Irn Bru...) since 1901 so no, it's not going anywhere.  They may have stopped exporting it...

They also handily spelt it the way the Scottish would pronounce it, so it's easier for foreigners to assimilate the proper pronunciation ^^ .

^ Nice, I've never been to Scotland despite it being a 'short' drive (short to Americans but the full length of the UK is long to us!) but it's widely available and orange so had to be tried.

Glad you can still get it, hopefully the reduced sugar doesn't impact the taste too much.

Why would someone waste good whisk(e)y by mixing it with something?

The good stuff does not have an "e" in it IMO. Jack Daniels in particular is so awful it's undrinkable even when you DO mix it with coke :p .

I think that's a hangable offense - not even sure you'd get away with adding an ice cube as it's cold up there :))

Vodka on the other hand is definitely served with Irn Bru.

Tennessee whiskey is to bourbon as Irish whisky is to Scotch. Good bourbon is wonderful.

I'm gonna be boring and say Coke. Regular fat coke, from a can or glass bottle. I don't drink much pop but when I do it's almost always this. Good for hangovers n all. Old Jamaica ginger beer, Dr. Pepper and 7up are prolly like a once a year thing.

Irn Bru is ridiculous but I'll drink it if I'm in Scotland just to fit in.

In all fairness, the only ones I've tried so far are JD, JB and Four Roses. All of those were awful, though - they all shared a very strange, dusty and sickly sweet taste.

I agree with sickly sweet,  but it's no worse than the "sickly" aspects of other concentrated liquors..

They all have some sort of very pronounced flavor note..

Oh, it's all a matter of taste, of course. Personally I'm very partial to Scotch, and recently I've also started appreciating brandy.

If you guys are ever in Tulsa, OK, you have to try Weber's Superior Root Beer. The only place to get it is at the one Weber's restaurant location unfortunately. It is the best root beer in existence. NOTHING comes close, none of the brand names or microbrewed stuff I've tried. You have to get it in a frosty mug for the full experience.

There's another place here called Brownie's that some consider to have better root beer, but it's not quite as good.
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The world has become a weird place.

Rootbeer preference has been a pretty divisive subject in my experience. IBC, Barq's, A&W.. My grandfather would exclusively buy MUG. I like 'em all, especially as floats.

Almost 15 years ago now my friend and I had a small sponsorship with Jones soda - I liked their black cherry. Vanilla Coke has been my favorite for a while but I'm going to try this Irn Bru, its on Amazon. It looks and sounds really good

Almost 15 years ago now my friend and I had a small sponsorship with Jones soda - I liked their black cherry. Vanilla Coke has been my favorite for a while but I'm going to try this Irn Bru, its on Amazon. It looks and sounds really good

Haha no way, TP. I'm pretty sure I'm Not-Super-Ugly  ;) but not a model!

Back when I lived in Virginia Beach, VA, my buddy Braden and I were gung-ho little grommets - surfing and skating as much as we could and then going snowboarding in the winter. We both liked Jones a lot and eventually put stickers on our surf and skateboards, took some action shots/videos and submitted them to Jones hoping to just get free soda.  :)) They started sending us a case every month with stickers and T-Shirts to giveaway. As 13 year olds, we were pretty stoked about it!

Jones isn't as common down here in FL though

You have no idea  :))

Whenever the waves were flat, we would go down all the 60 blocks of beachside hotel's parking garages on our skateboards, sometimes 6 or 7 stories tall.

There was one that was cylindrical in structure, having a slight but constant downward spiral rather than -ramp - level out -ramp- , that one was our favorite because you build speed the entire time

PS - "soda" is so Yankee. In the South, any soft drink is a "coke"

Coke or Mountain Dew

I'm pretty sure pop is a Midwest and Great Plains thing, the rest of the US is either soda or coke.

The good stuff does not have an "e" in it IMO. Jack Daniels in particular is so awful it's undrinkable even when you DO mix it with coke.

Tennessee whiskey is to bourbon as Irish whisky is to Scotch. Good bourbon is wonderful.
Could not agree more.

My answer is any soda with good bourbon... and then forget the soda.

Take any alcoholic beverage, even -GOOD- bourbon, if it didn't get people drunk,  The majority of people would not drink it.

We should really be More Honest about why we like something..

A -Good- bourbon Might indeed taste better than -Another- bourbon,

But when you say, Bourbon taste better  than Soda,   That's Crazy..

That's not how it works chyros..

Drunk is only the more-obvious symptom of intoxication.

But the Addicting pleasurable aspect of alcoholism only requires 0.5 to 1 shot of any hard liquor.

I don't drink to get drunk is on the list of denials to alcohol addiction (substance abuse)

along with.

I don't drink alone

I'm a connoisseur

I only get drunk on weekends..

This is simply not true, it's like saying water is addictive because it tastes refreshing :p . Or that getting out my front door is alcoholism because I do it EVERY DAY.

There's no way you're going to convince me that sipping a fine whisky or a nice beer from time to time - and yes, also on my own - is substance abuse :p . How could you possibly gauge whether I'm an alcoholic when I haven't even given you an indication of an ORDER OF MAGNITUDE of how much I drink and how often? :p

How much and how often have nothing to do with being an addict. Alcoholics that are sober are still alcoholics. Doesn't matter that they haven't had a drink in 10 years.

TP4 does not allow reason to get in the way of his opinions.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

First of all, by this logic everything you've ever done makes you an addict of that thing. I flew to South America on a school trip in high school, so I'm addicted to flying to South America?

Secondly, being addicted to something has a negative stigma attached to it. It's not necessarily a bad thing to be addicted. I'm addicted to drinking tea on my days off, is that a bad thing?

Hahaha..

Addiction, is generally regarded as when whatever you like to do becomes Bad-for-you.

But, as we now know.  It's any sufficient deregulation of brain reward pathways in response to currently recurring environmental stimuli.

So you are CORRECT in saying that Everything you do makes you an addict.

Just as some crazy things like NOT EATING, is an addiction in the form of anorexia, as it releases pleasurable chemicals in the brain.

Or Throwing up, in the case of Bulimia, where it too gives a mild high.

The addictive process is in EVERYTHING that you do.. it's designed that way to bind you to things that facilitates any action-step which may result in food or procreation.

The problem of modernity is that we've Thoroughly Solved both those problems as a species, perhaps not for every individual,  but humanity is for the most part Indefinite, excluding on geological time...

So now, when people take on Pleasure, it's hedonistic, rather than Survival..

And in that way,  Dopamine promoting activities are ALL Potentially addictive spirals.  Be it exercise or alcohol...

Aren't you at good odds of having engaged in self-deception for posting about vegan foods all the time? Maybe we haven't identified the "potentially hazardous" aspect of eating vegan.

If we're all addicts of something, there's no way to break that cycle and we're all destined to engage in self-deception at all times, even you.

You eat animal products HOPING that you won't become the statistic 70% of adults have heart disease.

You eat 100% Plant based,  KNOWING that Every society that is 90%+ plant based lives WITHOUT Heart disease/ Diabetes.

Your statistics are hugely flawed. You do realize there are other factors that contribute to heart disease and diabetes than eating meat, and we may not even know all of the causes. Hell, eating spinach could give you salmonella poisoning, but I'm sure that's not a factor for you when you decided to switch to a vegan diet.

There are more variables than just your diet that contribute to declining health, and everyone's body is different and can deal with certain things better than others' can. I'm sure you've heard of eating "paleo" and the potential health benefits of doing so.

We used to think smoking cigarettes helped prevent sore throats...

Hahahaha.. It's Not MY STATISTIC..

This is from the latest on heart research, BY PEOPLE who have finally managed to reverse heartdisease..

They've actually demonstrably cured the damn thing..

And oddly enough, at the same time they cured diabetes..

Because our animal heavy diet had been DIRECTLY causing both .

GOOGLE Caldwell Esselstyn and Dean Ornish

I don't doubt some other factors contribute to heart disease..

But it has been thoroughly proven that High Cholesterol MUST BE present for the most common type (congestive heart disease) to occur.

Even if you have all the genetic markers for risk, and NEVER exercised a day .. If you have LOW cholesterol.. YOU WILL NOT get congestive heart disease.

That is a fact..

There is NO CHOLESTEROL in ALL plant foods.  only 2 sources exist.  Animal foods, and You prebuilt production.

I think it was TP and NoisyTurtle that listed Fanta as their favorite and I mostly wanted to see how they (or any other fanta fan) would react  :p

On a serious level though, I had the opportunity to be a fatass this weekend and try out the Grape and Pineapple flavors from both brands and preferred Crush's soda in each instance.

Me & friends used to exist on that junk for a few yrs in the 90s. A lot of BMX riding  & a lot of "herbal supplements" is to blame ;) Nowadays I try to not drink any pop but when I do it's this,

I did the taste test against 5 different brands of orange soda years ago and Fanta was the winner. I'm sure I still have the results in a notebook somewhere.

I think the order was Fanta - Jarritos - Big K - Crush - Sunkist

the Sunkist tasted like it was made with rotten oranges

Hmm. That may be the case for orange soda-would be funny to see that data. I've always liked orange soda but rarely had it. My grandparents used to get Sunkist

I guess we would need to sample the full array of shared flavors for a complete comparison of Crush vs Fanta. I think Fanta may have more flavors - crush doesn't have mango.. that could be a point of contention itself.

That's the old style of Jolt cola can. They made it darker in the late '90s I think.
I have both of them on my shelf (of a the remnant of a once larger can collection).
Edit: I saw they have changed back to the old style now.

I have also heard of a rip-off called "Volt cola" ...

Yeah there definitely was a rip off called Volt Cola or something along those lines. They sold it (but not real Jolt) at the refreshment shack at my local BMX track back in the day.

I was just thinking of Jolt.

Used to be bottled in South Australia, then I moved to Victoria and nowhere seems to sell it any more.

Discovered a recipe to make Josta, gonna give it a try tomorrow and report back.

Recipe calls for:
24oz Pepsi (throwback preferred)
1/4 cup Bawls energy drink
3/4 cup Vitamin Water Power C

apparently it both looks and tastes very close to the original Josta

OK; so I got to try this recipe out today. Upon the first sip it genuinely did bring back memories of Josta, but by the time I was halfway into the glass it was clear it wasn't really the same... close though. One thing that this concoction was missing was Josta's trademark syrupy bite, the soda itself was almost viscous, like a bubbly fruity cola cough syrup while still retaining it's effervescence and bite/nip at the edges and tip of your tongue with the sharper fruit undercurrent. I wound up adding a few more teaspoons (1/2 cup total) of the Bawls to reenact that bite.

It would absolutely be better using a more concentrated dragonfruit juice flavor, but dragonfruit seems to have fallen out of popularity as a flavor and Vitamin Water was the only thing I could find.

Overall if you were a fan or want to have some idea of what Josta was like give this a try in a big mug full of ice and you won't be disappointed, but it certainly is not the real thing.

Nobody likes club-mate here?

That's pretty much the only soda that I'll drink anymore. I loathe corn-syrup in any form. I get this filmy coat of sugar on my throat that I can't stand. I've even changed BBQ sauce because of it.

But club-mate, I have yet to find a better soda...

Josta has more of a berry flavor, the sharp taste comes from the guarana in the Bawls which was one of the main ingredients in Josta.
