R9 390 problems or...?
« on: Wed, 23 March 2016, 17:53:36 »
So I got my new Gigabyte G1 gaming edition R9 390 today I upgraded from a HIS 7870. I did an Afterburner test on the 7870(didn't log) and noticed normal things, 57C temp 90% usage 40% fan speed etc. So I uninstall the drivers and updated to the new crimson drivers as of 3/23/16 and things look good so I load up the same game and did the same things as the 7870 on the 390 and logged the results since I saw the usage going crazy. Everything else seems normal but I also noticed frame drops from 24-61. However normally stayed in the 50's and 60. I was expecting a major boost in performance and I feel like nothing happened and I didn't see much difference even in load times. (Funny thing I did see a different in start up time!) Specs are simple.
8320 CPU (Think it's bottle necking the new card?)
32g ram DDR3
1000W power supply
60hz monitor

BTW I was playing Diablo 3 which is a very low performance game as a test and these are the results. I got the card for a good deal but is this just how AMD is or am I doing it wrong? Should the card be performing like this?

What was your performance like for Diablo on the 7870? Seems like 50-60 FPS is pretty good. Also, I have to imagine your CPU could be bottlenecking the GPU.

Performance is the same, also same for Heroes of the Storm which I made another log of and I am just concerned about the usage going up and down like it doesn't know what to do. The 7870 was pretty streamline and didn't jump like that so I am just trying to figure out if it's running properly. Fans and cooler seem fine.

Thanks

d3 is a massive cpu hog. and a 7870 is decent enough to run it at medium settings (resolution dependent)

Run a benchmark test and let me know what you're getting. Monitor your fans (CPU and GPU) while it's going on and report back.

Exactly this.  I would also recommend a run of PCMark Vantage - free one, to compare with other users of the same card and cpu to confirm that you are running correctly.  If still wonky, I would completely remove all drivers and start over with the previous stable one (15.11 ) since you are playing a game that has been out for a while.  Only reason to update drivers is to get patches for new games or to support a previously unsupported card.

Diablo 3 is a worthless game for benchmarking. I run it better (in most cases) on my newer-generation 4xxx i3/860m than I do on my 3xxx i7 with a GTX 780. My i3 is a lower clock T-series, where my i7 is a K-series.

I have found that, in most cases, dropping the sound channels on D3 is about the best way to get performance gains. Sounds crazy, but works.

Here are some benchmarks I think the main thing I am trying to find out is if it was a worthy upgrade.

Score here was 6 803 just wasn't in the screen shot.

This was test 2 the first test I got 60fps even but probably wasn't that much different.

I'm guessing now you will tell me to uninstall all drivers and load the 7870 to get a comparison? ;)
Thought I would also say it installed Directx 11. I saw 12 was out but didn't know if it made that much difference as I found it easier to find ads on it rather than a download page.

Nope, no need to re-run with the 7870.  I just looked up some scores with that card for heaven 4.0 and the scores are very similar to yours.  The 7870 scores around the mid to high 700s.  You should be good to go.  As others have said, D3 is very CPU dependent.  A higher clock speed may help, but mostly going into the settings and setting the screen refresh rate to match your monitor. You can play with v-sync on/off with the game in full screen and windowed full screen.  See what works best for you.   That will help the most.

He's using same CPU and GPU but he's overclocked it quite a bit. Maybe I should like into hitting 4ghz or so.

Another update is that I have a 1440p monitor and I switched from 1080p to 1440p in my games and didn't lose any performance. Maybe that in itself is worth it since I couldn't play in 1440p without a noticeable difference.

Oh that makes a huge impact on performance. 1440p has over 1.5 times as many pixels, and puts quite some strain on the GPU.

Thanks all for the input. I have switch back to 1080p for now. However I am opening the conversation back up because I just got a blue screen with win32.sys as the error which from what I know is video card related. I did see something about possible RAM issues but I doubt that. By the way I double checked and I have the lasted drivers and I have been getting the same D3D error in certain games I play just like with the 7870. I am wondering if I should just sell and get a 970gtx. I've tried both AMD and nvidia and never had problems like this or driver issues.

Thoughts about this?

um.... use msi afterburner to LOCK the clock speed for gaming.. that should improve performance.

I use msi but really new to it. Is there a place where I can learn what settings to put in based on the game I'm playing or what I am going? I take it there site will tell me how to lock these settings?

Edit: After looking up some youtube videos and msi site I click over to the afterburner and don't get a BSOD I get a total freeze and unable to ctlr alt del. Ghost in the machine!

I'm putting it up for sale. Just don't think I have the specs for this beast. I really only have a mid range to begin with at best.
I did get the MSI working though thanks  :thumb:

If 390 is still the same old GPU as 280, then that may well be the same old overheating/driver/other issue.
