did someone say evangelion
my fav youtuber, always has some very interesting points (even if like 60% of the comments are just calling him wrong lol)
Interesting video! There's a few problems with it, however:
The "death threats" and graffiti at the Gainax offices occurred after Death and Rebirth, not the original series. By this point, End of Evangelion was pretty much finished - Death & Rebirth were released in March 97, and EoE came out 4 months later in July - it would have been well into the post production phase at that point. In fact, Rebirth is largely just the 25 minutes of EoE. As for the death threats themselves, in an interview with the Tokyo International Film Festival, Anno said that the letters and emails sent were written by Gainax staff, as they didn't believe they legally could use real fan mail. They've also all been translated, and the majority of what was written in the letters and emails were actually positive, though there were a few that were decidedly negative. It hasn't been said anywhere if the ratio of the "faked" letters matched what they really got.
Another problem is that Anno has repeatedly stated in interviews, even after EoE, that Shinji is a surrogate for himself. If EoE is Anno's way of taking revenge against anyone, it's not his audience.
The other issue is that EoE is at least in part based off of the original scripts written for the series. In the 'Red Cross Book' given to theatergoers for EoE, it explains that the first part of the movie is based off of the original script for episode 25 that they had to scrap.
I do think his overall characterization of Shinji and Asuka is spot on, though.
