Banned from r/mm
« on: Fri, 02 February 2018, 16:55:30 »
I just got banned from mechmarket for 10 days because I asked why

This gets a little wordy, but since I can't sell my caps right now I have nothing else to do.

I recently decided to try and sell a few of my caps on mechmarket. I posted my sale on wednesday afternoon, and on thursday morning I saw that my post had only 25 views. So I deleted the post, lowered some of the prices and altered my title to simplify it. I re-posted it about 25 minutes later and went on with my business... Well, unfortunately for me r/mm has a rule against posting the same sale twice in a 48-hour period. I wasn't aware of this rule but it makes sense and I was definitely in the wrong. The moderator that deleted my re-post also saw it fit to ban me for 5 days because of it. I was curious why the punishment seemed so harsh, so I asked the mod team for an explanation. I was told that my ban was because it seemed like I was trying to circumvent the rules. I decided to go back and read through all of the rules to see how I could have circumvented them by re-posting my deleted sale too soon. This struck me as odd because the rules specifically mention deleting a post and reposting it in a 48-hour period as a no-no.

"How could that be circumventing the rules if the rules discuss it exactly" I wondered.

So I decided to respond again asking which rule I was circumventing specifically and asked why I wasn't given the opportunity to follow the "infraction system" that is at the bottom of the rules page (which would have carried a warning and having my post taken down as the first strike).

The response I got was "Moderators of /r/mechmarket have the right to arbitrarily make a decision based on the information before them. Any ruling or decision made by a Moderator supersedes the rules and is to be followed. These ruling can change from one situation or another." (essentially saying, "the rules don't matter.") He then went on to say how my post seemed "shady" because I deleted it and re-posted it.

At this point I knew this conversation was going nowhere and nothing I said would help to lessen the punishment that I received. I responded and told them that I don't see any point in protesting this ban any further and said that they should consider easing up on the martial law punishments and account for user history before passing judgement willy-nilly.

To which I received this message, "Since I'm feeling willy-nilly, enjoy an extra 5 days off." (He sure showed me)

He also told me that moderators don't appreciate it when people question their bans and argue because it wastes their time.

Here's what is sent to you when you get banned from r/mm:

Quote
subreddit message via /r/mechmarket[M] sent 2 days ago

You have been temporarily banned from participating in r/mechmarket. This ban will last for 9 days. You can still view and subscribe to r/mechmarket, but you won't be able to post or comment.

If you have a question regarding your ban, you can contact the moderator team for r/mechmarket by replying to this message.

Reminder from the Reddit staff: If you use another account to circumvent this subreddit ban, that will be considered a violation of the Content Policy and can result in your account being suspended from the site as a whole.

That's annoying. At least in the mean time you can post in the GH classifieds?

I don't know anything about reddit but I do feel that clear and unambiguous rules make for a level playing field.

Your situation seems pretty ordinary and straightforward, based on the one side of it that we hear from you.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

The rules are pretty clear, the punishment is not...

It also doesn't feel great knowing that the rules don't really matter if a moderator chooses that they don't like you

The rules on /r/mm are pretty clear. But I'm a bit shocked that you got a 5 day ban on a first infraction (if that is the case). Probably has to do with the volume of users currently on there these days. I remember when you'd only see maybe 100 active users. Now it's frequently close to 2,000

It also doesn't feel great knowing that the rules don't really matter if a moderator chooses that they don't like you

Did you give them a reason in the past to not like you?

Make sure not to pick anyone TOOO attractive, because Gamer-Geeks are self conscious and of low confidence, They have to be under the belief-state such that They have a shot..

Not particularly, just saying that because of the clause in the rules that allows them to throw out the rule book whenever it seems fitting...

I don't really think it's because of volume, just putting that out there. There are a lot more users than there had been. Plus, there may be more going on over there with the mods that we don't know about.

Sounds like you just so happen to stumble upon a grumpy mm mod on the wrong day. I do think the situation is a bit ridiculous. I understand they do it for free, but if you volunteer to do it, then do it with a good attitude.

From what I can tell, there are a lot of active users on mechmarket and the deleting and reposting strategy is getting abused pretty frequently. In the case that a moderator catches it (or someone prob reported it), you can just say you didn't know and get away with it even if it was intentional.

I can understand why they would start handing out 5 day bans for this particular offense, especially if they see you've been around for a few years and are a frequent poster. I've made an album below to show how many times you are warned to read the rules prior to posting.

https://imgur.com/a/tVAYA

Instead of approaching them apologetically that you are somehow still ignorant of the rules they throw at you from every direction, you ask a pretty obvious question- which rule you were possibly circumventing? This one - which he had already told you.

"ALL personal trading posts (e.g. buying/selling/trading) have a 48 hour cooldown period from your last post made on /r/mechmarket"

The irony here is that your user history was probably the main reason you received the ban and what inspired him to actually be willy nilly.

Thanks for the lul

To be fair, you did leave the part out about your general tone. And I'm definitely the mod who went all willy-nilly. Honestly, if you just would've handled it in a more kind fashion, I would've reversed the ban and we all could've gone on our merry way. There's been more than a few instances where I've given people the benefit of the doubt on first offenses or misunderstandings. However, if you come at a mod, or anyone for that matter, in the tone you chose, don't expect much. Hope you have a better experience in the future.

Perhaps. But as someone who hasn't broken any rules, I find the ban and then extension a little over the top. A true moderator wouldn't try to escalate the situation and would be the bigger person. But it's unsurprising that those who seek out a little online power strut and puff up when they can.

I appreciate a good Diablo 2 reference. If by releasing ip and resetting ont/modem/gateway you’re trying to get a new public ip, it doesn’t always work. AT&T for example is in short supply of IP so most of the time you keep the one you have for a long time and often even through complete gateway changes.

Anyways back on topic. I too was banned for posting too soon in 48hours. I got carried away selling a bunch of stuff and lost track of the times. I received a warning and then I received a 3day ban. It was my bad, and I wasn’t deleting and reposting. They were all posts for different items. The extra 5 days does seem pretty savage though lol.

Yeah the mods are drunk with power, but that is so often the case.  What I really don't understand is the legion of domesticated dweebs they have over there that apparently have nothing better to do than to go around checking each post to make sure that it doesn't break a rule.  Even if the issues are inconsequential or mistakes made in good faith, doesn't matter.  They're like the old people at Del Boca Vista.  Like sncbraxsc2, up there.

There's always ebay.  I post to geekhack to try and find a kindred soul first, but if I can't sell something ebay usually does the trick.

I been one of those people that screwed up my post and couldn't edit it had to wait 48hrs before reposting. My way of looking at it was this.

Sites free, hardly in advertising, and uses donation system to keep it alive. The rules are clearly posted in plan English that don't take but 10mins to read. Don't like the rules don't like the admins, don't like the way things are handled. Then we can start our own website. Advertise it generate the traffic for it. Pay the bandwidth fee's. Find reliable mods.. then make the rules for it to be anything we want. I know personally wouldn't go thought all that trouble I just use Mech Market and play nicely with the understanding that if I don't like it. I can just leave never come back. That its not a right to use a website. Like using Geek hack isn't a right.. its a privilege granted by the owner.

Before anyone say's its A$$ kissing its not.. cause if I ran a website and I have in the past. Then I expect people to follow my rules as long as I am paying for it and offering the service free. The moment I stop doing that and someone else takes over. Then they can create what ever rules they want and expect others to follow them. The internet is a right.. the content on the internet is a privilege.

When rules aren't broken, no moderation is needed. Funny that!
Right. But he didn't go off on a power trip and say the rules don't matter and lock the thread anyway. This stands in stark contrast to the situation with the OP.

Just to be completely clear, in an alternate reality (which happens often) , it could've gone like this:

---

Nafs: You've been banned for breaking posting rules.

Op: Hey, sorry. Didn't realize that. I'll read up on the rules for next time.

Me: No worries, happens all the time. I'll drop the ban to a reposting warning so you can still play on the subreddit. Just sort it out before your next post.

---

This entire post is predicated on op's insistence to push a point. So not only has more time from the r/mm mod team been taken, now GH mods as well. Seriously, we are trading keyboard wares here, let's keep perspective and not act like I shot your dog.

Oh man. We're all wasting the admins time guys, they have waaaaay more important things to do. Nobody told you to come here, guy.
