Converting older Unicomp Model M 105 to 104
« on: Thu, 08 March 2018, 07:39:03 »
I successfully converted one of my Unicomps from 105 to 104 key layout after reading about it a while ago. Now I own a 104 layout 2017 Ultra Classic which is not availabe from factory.  :)

I own a second slightly older 2012 Classic which I also would like to convert to 104. Unfortunately the spacebars seems to have been grown between generations, as shown below.

new gen spacebar left, older gen spacebar right

I´d like to ask if someone successfully converted his older Unicomp from 104 to 103 layout (which should be spacebar-wise the same as my 105 to 104 conversion)? Unicomp lists only large spacebars without detailing which generation they belong to. Those spacebars wont fit on my old model as the spaceing between key stem an support stem is different.

I wouldn't worry too much about what Unicomp lists on their site.  Contact their support and tell them what you need, they likely have it somewhere.

The 103 (or 104 for ISO layout) spacebars on the current generation of Unicomp keyboards are the same as the 101/102-key spacebars.

The older ones, pre-2013, keyboards can't be coverted - the newer frame can support 101, 103 and 104 layouts with a single membrane layout, and a single barrel frame layout, and minimizes the number of different sizes of keys required. The old one had a completely different layout, and the barrel frame wont have the clips for a spacebar which can cover one of the bottom row keys to the right of the keyboard. I also don't think there are any BS spacebars long enough for the job (I'm guessing it would need to be a 7.5u space bar?)

This shows the differences: https://www.pckeyboard.com/mm5/graphics/ProductNews7-25-13.pdf

...Why won't the world accept me as I am

A good start would be to let go of the tedious, cutesy text-styling thing and show us how interesting your actual writing can be. I'm just saying.

I already feared something like this but thank you very much for the clarification.  :thumb:
