Just got the amazon air quality meter. It's a laser based Sen44 module. Realistically it only reads pm2.5 reliably, since correlation factors for pm10 is often too wildly inaccurate due to the differences in the calibration particle size distributions and real world variances.

Even for its intended use, It's not absolutely accurate.

Nearby (couple miles out) EPA and PurpleAir sensors today around 50 aqi which is ~15ug/m^3.

Indoor amazon sensor reads 1-2ug downstairs,  air purifier is on.  5-7 upstairs no purifier on.   9-14 outdoors in the yard.

Tp4 is about 500 meters to the nearest big highway, so that is out of the range for highway pollution as long as there are no strong winds.

The meter doesn't have a battery, but it uses 5v, so it can be attached to a power bank. Oddly 1 of the powerbanks kept turning off even though it's well within the current capacity of the meter. Tried a different power bank, they're both off-brand cheapies, and the second one works.

The internal fan of the sensor is always spinning, this is reasonable given that it is needed for updated pm-2.5 data. It's not especially loud. can't hear it.

Don't know how long 10,000mah will power it, but one would suspect quite a while at least a couple days.

Only supports 2.4ghz as usually with IoT devices.

Tried boiling some water, with the unit over the top of the pot, mainly detected rise in VOC and CO,  no pm2.5 increase. I suppose this is good as it means clean combustion is taking place.

Be careful not to burn the thing and its cord, it's plastic.

Pros of this unit:

Amazon has a real engineering team and quality assurance.
Integrates with Alexa App, so you can monitor the sensor anywhere.
Has a tripod mounting hole.
Updates readout fairly quickly.
2.4ghz has pretty good range. You can take it quite far from the house to get readings.
Reads temp/humidity/pm2.5/carbon-monoxide/VOCs.
Onsale for $46 pre-primeday.
Software keeps good data tracking, though you know the Guhbamant/ Privacy concerns/ AI atk patterns.

Cons:

Don't think this thing can connect via bluetooth.
No display on board.
Kind of hoped that the sensor had more granularity, but given the rated accuracy of only +/- 20%, granularity would be useless.

Looking at DIY options, you can't beat amazon's sale price. buhhhhhh...... also no Gubahmant.

Adding a con, the amazon sensor has a 7 minute calibration period every time on power off.

Tp4's cheapie power bank also can't charge and provide power at the same time.

can definitely tell a difference now between 1ug and 10ug/m^3

it's like a dry feeling at the back of the throat/ in the lungs, and a mild bitterness in the roof of the mouth.

the outside = POISON

Update, amazon sensor, the VOC reading is wildly inaccurate if there's a large change in humidity. Luckily the pm2.5 reading is unaffected and consistent.

Adding circulation greatly enhances the efficiency of the purifier.

The purifier has its own fan, but it will get a high amount of re-uptake, filtering already filtered air, because it has no ability to move air farther from itself, relying on entropy to mix the air.

A low powered mixing fan at the far end of the room / space greatly speeds up the purification.

Oh yeah, basically needed. A lot of people don't realize how air purifiers distribute air, or how air works. It has a density, and will just hang around your purifier mostly if you don't move the air in the room around.

If only we could visualize it, like with smoke or something....

Tp4 has tested with incense, don't,  they're basically useless in filtering VOCs, the whole room still smells like incense from 3 weeks ago.

932, Wow.

AQI has been over 200 today. Sure wish I had an AC unit. It is either be tired and cough from smonk, or sweat in my 90 degree room

Almost makes going to work a relief

I have an ac and it really does help those hot Australian summers. Maybe it's just me, but 90 Fahrenheit doesn't seem that bad (unless you are talking about celsius, in which case good luck)

Aqi = 200 is the same (lifespan) health-risk as smoking ~7 cigarettes in 24 hours.

Tp4 recommends air purifier + midea u air conditioner. costco has the 12000btu for $280 in places.

AQI is a tier function, you can use my handy conversion spreadsheet.

which purifier are you using?  I'm really tired of the smell on this levoit i have

Had to go to the doctor today and I noticed they had a Medifyair unit in each room.  They put out a nice amount of air and it smelled fresh.

Tried a bunch of brands, they all have the sour hot glue smell for the first week or so.

I've settled on Winix for noise performance reasons.  The Levoit is just as good, but they cost more than winix.

Out of all the brands, I honestly think levoit has the best build quality.
