I've used Cherry, Topre, ALPS and Romer-G switches all fairly recently.

Cherry's ok if you can't get anything else.

LOL I actually think the Ryu example was really good, it's jack of all trades master of none.

It's probably at the moment most accessible switch with most options (with all the MX compatible options, custom keycaps, custom cases, custom springs, and custom keyboard kits).

But if you look at spcific criteria there are other switches that do certain things better:

ALPS = More tactility.
Buckling Spring = More mechanical feel.
Topre = Smooth and comfortable typing experience.
Romer-G = LOL this one puzzles me because I'm not exactly sure which area this does better yet, Romer-G feels like it's kind of like MX Brown but just overall a little bit sturdier and tiny bit more tactile.

But again each still has their issues and problems but overall Cherry does decent in all categories or even if not they have potential for people to mod it or improve it to their liking.

Cherry MX is like the Camry of switches, everyone complain about it but it's still the best selling car LOL.

In my experience, Romer-G is less tactile than MX Browns. And that's pretty ****ing tactile-less. I don't know if I'd describe it as sturdy but mushy. It feels like I'm pressing onto a wet roll of tissue.

That being said, I'd still prefer it over any cheapo crappy membrane and I didn't (completely) hate the experience while using it.

I have typed on linear switches more tactile than Romer-G. Like matias reds. I honestly don't know what they were thinking.

I'd wish that were the case but that's unfortunately the exact opposite of what actually happens. Not everyone complains about Cherry, it's exactly the opposite. Everything non-Cherry is extremely niche and the vast majority of people in the community don't even know they exist - I dare say that most of them think that Cherry INVENTED the mechanical keyboard on their own and that the MX switch is from 2010 or something, while it's actually from 1983 and back then Cherry were only a very small player and not really rated by anyone. Cherry keyboards were basically an afterthought, if a thought at all.

It's not like their switches aren't functional or anything, I mean they work fine, and they're certainly not without their own merits, but for me one of the most jarring issues is that basically everything else at least FEELS better, yet Cherry are the only one that people know about.

If we're strictly talking about key feel then I don't know how anyone can claim with a straight face that Cherry is better than Alps.  Doesn't matter if you're talking about clicky, tactile, or even linear (though they're admittedly closer there), Alps dominates.

That said there are things that are important besides key feel.  They're just not things that get people in the hardcore community very excited.

Alps switches seem to me to be a lot more temperamental than Cherry.  They're well-known to be more vulnerable to dirt and dust, but it's not just that.  I've had much more problems on Alps boards with things like pressing a key once and having two keystrokes register, likely because the contacts aren't connecting cleanly.  Not to say that happens all the time or anything, but it does seem to happen more on Alps than Cherry.  Cherry just seems more reliable.  (Note that this is really about simplified Alps.  I haven't spent enough time with complicated Alps switches to even have an opinion here...)

The same is true for complicated Alps. Although not as unreliable as simplified ones, they're still extremely fickle.

It wasn't until I started getting in MKs and especially Alps that I understood why the Top Gear presenters like Alfa Romeo cars.

They feel similar, but clunkier. It is mostly due to the added tactility of the switch plate, it adds a second bump and feels 'strange', especailly if you are coming from complicated alps. Otherwise, they are just like simplified alps. The word 'clunky' is used in comparison to complicated alps. The switches are still leaps and bounds better than anything cherry mx based. Kailh box switches with click bars are the first cherry switch I have actually enjoyed after switching to alps, but they still aren't as nice.  They need to get on that before an alps based switch figures out how to do cherry mx mounting... I fear that might be game over if that switch goes mainstream.

How close to matias feel to alps? clicky

That seems right because matias have that double bump and I hate it

Cherry MX is like the Camry of switches

I have been driving Camrys for over 20 years and am on my 3rd one now (all 4-door, 4-cylinder automatics). I rarely complain about my cars.

There are acceptable MX-style switches (clear and brown), good ones (ergo clears), and very good ones (jailhouse green and blues), and after you lube them and install O-rings they get much better, but while I want my car to be dependable and economical, I want my keyboard to be more than that.

“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"
