Pokèmon cards!
« on: Tue, 14 February 2017, 01:04:28 »
Hey Geekhack,

I recently got back into collecting Pokèmon cards (Specifically Japanese), and I was wondering if anyone else on here collects/used to collect Pokemon cards?

I still have a binder full of them from when I was a kid. Thankfully I didn't touch them in my adolescent years and they have been preserved as-is since then.

Although I wish I had the foresight to buy multiple big booster boxes... I see that they are going for around $3000 these days on eBay!

I started with the WotC sets. Only ever completed Base and Jungle from the booster boxes, and got about half of the Black Star promos.

You should avoid in-store Sun/Moon packs at all costs:

I have only bought an English sun and moon booster box instead of individual packs because of this issue.

So far I have only completed double crisis Japanese, but I just opened 2 Japanese Sun & Moon booster boxes yesterday and today, so I am hoping that I have completed/near completed the set (I will check tonight (I am at school ATM)).

English Sun&Moon boxes are mappable (you are able to find out what packs have the good cards out of a box (every third pack I believe?))

Yeah, essentially by pulling a single pack you can then determine what remaining packs have the foil cards in them. Unscrupulous store owners will pick through the boxes and leave all the unopened trash packs in, or even worse make entire displays of all garbage packs with no liability on their end since they are still sealed.

Damn! Good to know! I would love to open a full box of this set and evolutions. Maybe I'll just get some more Korean cards.

I wouldn't recommend getting an Evolutions booster box. The box costs the exact same as Sun and Moon and the cards are no where near as valuable, plus unless you like the look of the older style cards the cards are pretty boring.

I don't play so it's only for looks and evolutions for nostalgia. I'm probably best off not buying any though :p

If its for looks, then Japanese would be a good option.
I got a Japanese sun and a Japanese moon box for $130 AUD shipped all together.
My final pulls were 6X GX Cards + 1X Secret Rare (unlisted) GX + 1X Secret Rare trainer + 20X Regular rare holo cards.

Yeah, Koreans are the cheapest, but they have no value and no-one really collects them so its pretty hard to trade with other people on places such as /r/pkmntgctrades

I would imagine for collecting reasons, or to give to your kids because they are so cheap.

I stopped collecting at least 10 years ago but I still have all the cards in a few binders back home. IIRC I had maybe 15-20 different Mudkip cards because I loved the cute lil bastard.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

Just sorted all of my Japanese Sun and moon cards at school (because I am suspended today  :-[), and I have every single common, uncommon and rare holo BUT I am missing 2 GX Cards (1 from each set). I will most likely sell my Lillie trainer (thats worth about $80 USD) and buy the 2 cards I am missing  :thumb:
