As this thread gains more exposure, people will start panicking and start dumping their CCs. The moose gonna secretly buy them all and resell to robin hood...

At decent prices at least and not an obscene mark-up.  Probably what they paid to get them.  I always wish they were lower, but what can you do.

Maybe because even after all the good CC does in bringing attention and new members to this community, it still generates an unsettling amount of ill-will, butthurt, and toxic runoff. Or maybe they just need the money and know that people will do silly things for those small pieces of plastic.

if someone out there is looking to unload a milk blue....

I don't see a problem with people doing an auction.  If someone has taken the time and purchased a number of clacks from the various sales, it is their prerogative to decide they don't feel like collecting them anymore and move in a different direction.  The fact that people are willing to spend the ridiculous $$ on them will make them even more sought after.

I don't like seeing people buy them, just to flip them at a substantial increase.  Would I like to get one?  Yes, of course.  I am a collector and want one to add to my collection.  Will I pay more than $35+shipping?  No.  To me the novelty of collecting clacks (or any other rare key) is getting lucky during one of the sales.  I don't have disposable income to get in on an auction, so more power to those that do.

wut. i'd buy a ****ty IBM board for that green V2

This is correct.. dump them fast if you can..

There never was a "market"  it was a few select guys.. Hashing together a plot, to bring about an illusion of scarcity...

This was done to sucker unsuspecting "idiots" out of a their money.

people will continue to list clacks at very high prices, and they will continue to sell very fast (until the consumer gets wise, which it won't) . there is a market for them, or else people wouldn't pay $400 for a translucent skull

no document, no proof of transaction.

The way I look at it is someone
I think the only realistic answer is that a new robin hood (probably zenuty) has taken all the clacks from CF and will soon redistribute it for the poor and bring balance to Narnia.

^This.

From what I have seen there hasn't been a good sell-off in a while.... maybe the forum was due?  I can't imagine what the alternative would be.

Ergodox is about using the keyboard.. not collecting...

It is a sale with sound purpose... a true innovation..

For example... when they first invented the "hand bag"  OMFG, that **** is awesome..

Then came... Prada,  Handbag,, too cheap.. let's sell it for $9999, and call it fashion.... :D

The ergodox, is like cargo pants... Fvck handbags... why the fvk would you carry that...

Notice the manliest of man wear cargo pants. :D

But ergodox keyboard is quality, hand crafted .... much like clack mania.

THey are really similar if you get below the surface.

There are 10,000 rounds now of ergodox run by MASSDROP inc yet price remains the same

coincidence??? :D

Your thesis is sound.

But one thing that doesn't make sense to me still .....

What is the connection to ergodox?

The Clack Illuminatii are in a conspiracy with the Molemen.

The Molemen cannot invade your house if you have an ergodox.

But if you sell your ergodox to buy Clacks, then the Molemen can tunnel into your bedroom, abduct you, and probe uranus.

[But that's only if the Bigfoots don't get you first.  AND Molmen probing is A LOT more pleasant than Bigfoot probing, I can assure you.]

So keep your ergodox next to your bed at night when you sleep.

Superhero underpants help too.

i used to think the problem was on the seller side. and to an extent, i think people who sell click clacks do bear some responsibility for the prices they can reach. i am guilty of selling click clacks at a markup, but only when offered a set price -- i'd rather sell them to people for what they're worth to them, assuming i paid 'retail'.

at this point though, i think if someone wants to pay a lot of money for a piece of plastic, and they're spending their own income on it, then they have to take some responsibility for raising prices.

no matter what, it sucks for people who don't have the money to get the things they want, but ESPECIALLY with a place like geekhack, hype is a major factor. there are definitely a lot of people (myself included, at least when i first got into mechs) who get excited about all the cool (new to them) toys that are on the market, and of course with a collecting hobby, rarity (artificial or otherwise) is going to play a big part in how much certain things are coveted.

i have to say, as soon as I got my kmac (first "expensive" mech, first "custom") i started to become disillusioned with the collecting aspect. the damn thing offered no measurable benefit by subjective standards to me. i had paid tons of money and waited for delivery and assembly only to find that a cherry switch is a cherry switch is a cherry switch, and by that time i'd bought my first realforce and figured out that i preferred topre to anything else available. if only i'd just bought a type-S hhkb before getting my trusty old leopold, i could have avoided spending a lot of money on things that i didn't need to.

so kids: think about what you're buying. do your research. treat the hype as just that -- people don't hype things for no reason, but it's often overblown and especially in this hobby, everything comes down to subjective preference.

Funny thread, but the reality is likely much more mundane.

Just looking at past sales data I can see that there are quite a few CC aficionados who live very close to one another or are roommates; and I assume from their locations that they're in college. Any appearance of a "sell-off" is likely just a few young guys who are moving on to the next stage of their life and are shedding some valuables to help fund it.

There doesn't seem to be any shortage of customer inquiries for CCs. And the gnomes haven't stopped working...

That's teasing ...

I can't concentrate now.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

no matter what, it sucks for people who don't have the money to get the things they want, but ESPECIALLY with a place like geekhack, hype is a major factor. there are definitely a lot of people (myself included, at least when i first got into mechs) who get excited about all the cool (new to them) toys that are on the market, and of course with a collecting hobby, rarity (artificial or otherwise) is going to play a big part in how much certain things are coveted.

For someone who came to GH being literally broke, (after saving up for 2 years to afford a computer), i can't express the frustration that was felt to try and get into the clack game. I hear the frustration from others who are not in the game yet, because it's honestly not easy without spending a lot of money. It's still possible, people still do it, i did it, but it's frustrating for many to see collectors swoop in with money to spend and pick up some duplicates for their massive collections. not saying that's unfair, just frustrating. never have i spend more then $24 (retail) to this day, and i don't ever plan on it. I don't care if others sell their clacks for $0 or for $400 because i don't really care about people making profit on GH. But for myself, i will never sell a clack for more then retail, because i was beyond frustrated when i started out here and learned about clacks, and discovered the ones i want.

just supersaiyan that it's super frustrating -_-

dude i was in pretty much the same position as you, and I never paid more than retail for a clack -- in fact, every clack i ever spent money on was straight from EK or CC.
it can be frustrating. for me, it got to the point that i was more frustrated with all the drama and price gouging than i was actually interested in these novelty keycaps. that's when i stopped caring at all... although I haven't pulled any awesome stunts like kmiller8 ;)

Well, it appears that absurd profiteering and ****ing idiotic buyers with too fat of a ****ing wallet are still running rampant around this place. Some of them, in fact, are running this place.

Can someone please explain how this is still happening? I'm really confused.

CC told me the other day he was making new round of tricolors, and the metallic series, as well as the older 4grabs colors.

And the gnomes haven't stopped working...

kmiller...exploring boundries no other man has dared..  :))

honestly, i think a lot of it is hype. how does the whole, massive community fall in love with one skull design? It's cool but not $400 cool. It's all preference too, but i think there is a lot of "oh look, that thing is worth $200, i want one". I like 1 clacks in specific, which is a blank. CC makes some cool work, and people like these skulls and all, but a lot of it is just hype and build up. my only dream is that CC can make more of the clack that i like so i can get more haha. People once valued this clack highly, but with the recent sale, i think the 'price' is going down, which is good for me. they are priceless to me, but unfortunately not to most people :-P

I think krinkle is a hero. Not even being facetious when I say that, he's taking a stand against this bull**** and proving if he cannot have the clacks, no one will get the clacks(at least his.) We need more people like that. Dubs, keep amassing all the julysicles until you have the all and then we can make a real statement!

fn caps...wish there was an mx version of that haha
good luck on your search

the julysicle hunt is now technically 'easier' with the influx of the recent sale, but not ever wanting to spend $100 makes it 10x harder haha

You traded Raindrop for a Julysicle didn't you? I think that's more than $24. Don't tell half truths to make yourself look better.

Ok...

I've always had a hard time trying to understand this clickclack stuff.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I see it.

There is a person called "click clack" who makes skull and other keycaps, probably spending less than $2 on the plastics to make them

He sells them for ~$100 dollars.

Tons of people buy them.

Then they rave about how clickclack is an amazing person for "gifting" such well crafted, amazing pieces of art to such simple, unworthy people such as us.

Am I missing something?

I'm with tp4 on this one.

Click Clack makes the caps and sells them for between 14-30 each typically.  The clacks are hoarded and then profiteering happens.

Honestly I think there is more to the whole thing but whatever.

That makes NO sense. If dubs paid more than $24 for the raindrop set, then he paid more than $24 for a julysicle..........

The markup is not what is important, Thimplum. People pay for the caps what is worth to them. Same thing with cars and whatever else.

I don't think people buy CCs in order to profit. The bubble is not caused by speculation. I think XD
