Check the OP, quotes are in

Thanks for the quote!

I'd be in for one with the "ANSI 1.5x with short R-shift" layout from the GH60 buy.

Put me on the list.

Can I also get a "ANSI 1.5x with short R-shift" with tools?

I'm adding up the costs now; right on the fence about it.

I may not get a chance to remake the file but I'm certain I want my 60%, to be an ALPs kbd -- and I'm also on the fence about the layout. Half of me says Pure1 for dedicated arrows, the other half says I haven't seen Spirit's PCB so choose WKL/1.75 for increased compatibility. Another half says heck go lowpoly and save $50 so you can focus on having this thing, and another half says I've never done anything even remotely like that.

...help...?

Yeah I'll have to drop back to switch tools as well, with shipping that's out of my price range for the plate.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Almost all custom plates are cut with a cutout that allows for plate mount cherry, costar and well as PCB mount cherry (if they PCB supports PCB mounting)

I use this cutout so all of those stabilizers should work

so i'm thinking of hand finishing the raw material to a really fine mirror finish. basically what's going to happen now is that there is a certain amount of material that's going to go to a grinder whose mission in life is going to make it meet very fine mechanical tolerances. our material is going to skip that because it's expensive and unnecessary. all we really care about is how it looks, frankly, and that's best done by smaller hand tools.

if we're going to do it ourselves, a tooling investment will be needed though. a random orbital sander, polishing compound and some abrasives should do it.. the cutter may also be able to surface it quite nicely. i suspect it will be cheaper for us to do it ourselves though.

Presumably this would increase the final price a bit? Not a deal-breaker at all for me, but my wallet needs to prepare for the abuse to come.

Edit: I actually agree with some later posters that I'd rather have this done myself later if I decide on it. I was kinda looking forward to the look of unfinished titanium

In my opinion getting the best quality plate possible should be the aim of this buy and if that is what you think would result in a good quality plate I it should be done regardless of the price increase. (within reason!)

For me it's already quite an expensive (and potentially risky) investment. I have polishing facilities here so can do this stage.

I guess you would polish the large sheet all in one go so let me know if this becomes the new plan and what this means with regard to pricing.

Fingers crossed this all goes well as it would be fantastic!

at the moment, we're looking at completely unfinished. meaning there will be stamps and scale and weird crap on it. the first level of finish would be something like a 100 uinch RMS, which is pretty easy to do by hand with a quick pass of a random orbital. that won't necessarily pull enough material off to get rid of the stamping and scale though. the CP2 sheet i was playing around with i brushed at around 400 grit, then did a hand lap at 600 then 2000 grit carbide. and it still left quite a bit of junk on the surface. it was very very far from a mirror finish though.

there will be a a fair amount of time to play with the material once it comes in. this is something we can definitely play by ear.

I'm actually more in favor of reduced finishing, or no finishing. Mirror plates would be an odd, but cool thing, but a plate with random stamps under the cutouts? Way cool -- it would look like something out of the Fallout video game series. Put some Commando set keycaps over the top of it and make that your survivalist keyboard!

Agreed, though very different,  both will look good.

Unpolished can be polished in the future...but you can't go back to the original look. Thinking a low profile case (some plate exposure) coupled with this and the old school round 5 honeywell's GB would be a great retro combination...that's my planned egro-clear build for 2014.

I'd take at least one plate if not two. Also if the switch tools are titanium I will want a set and give my current stainless steel set away. If they are V2 of stainless steel I'm in if help is needed for MOQ, otherwise I'll pass.

Does the Use of CP4 in aerospace make it special?

I mean.. these specs are designed to fulfill specific purposes. differences in hardness, ductility, operational temperatures, etc. The Titanium grades is not a scale of rarity or quality.

So.. even though CP4 is commonly used in Aerospace, that doesn't mean it'd be the ideal choice for a keyboard plate..

Grade 5 is also extensively used "in aerospace" and it's much harder than 4, because it's alloyed.

I'd say since all titanium grade would be "hard enough"  why not use Grade 7 ?.. it is the most corrosion resistent.. given the sweat from our hands and oils.. that property seems more attractive..

I agree cp4 aerospace keyboard plate sounds super cool.. but i hope people arn't going into this JUST on that.. and make a fool of themselves when they meet a titanium xpert.

Titanium is already very corrosion resistant. As well as very reactive. That's why you don't find the stuff in nature. It's everywhere.
The good thing is that as soon as it reacts with anything, it forms titanium oxide, which is virtually unreactive and much harder than pure titanium.
I wouldn't worry about the type of titanium too much.

Kawa said he had some titanium, I love titanium and know someone who can have it cut. That's pretty much why I'm buying a plate or two. It really isn't about the properties of the material, it's just ****ing cool to have a goddamn titanium plate!
