My interpretation of the idea was to have it be any sort of movie, but it would be the "B-movie" to our main "A-movie" of the night.  So I would think these suggestions would be perfectly okay.  But as always, this is a collaborative idea, so we can discuss.

oh ok.. so not B-movie.. just  Movie indexed @ B, the second letter of the english alphabet, analogously the second movie played...

I get it now..

I'll make a numbered encore comedy list  just under our regular movie list on my next day off work. Then Hoff can draw from that on stream night.

Go ahead and add the movies we (Wildcard, tp4, myself) already added, if you don't object:
-UHF
-Top Secret
-This is Spinal Tap

I also tentatively added some picks of my own, which can be vetoed for whatever reason you like - I was simply scanning through my selection and picked them out:
-Harold and Kumar, any
-Happy Gilmore
-Holes

Yeah I just came up with the B-movie idea when we were trying to decide on a second movie. I think it works well to have movies queued up in case we decide to do the encore.

Here's another big list to choose from, some of these might become A movies if someone picks them.

Galaxy Quest
Danny Deckchair
Caddyshack
Dodgeball
Elf
Coming to America
Kingpin
Hot Fuzz
Happy Gilmore
Hangover
Blues Brothers
Office Space
The Producers (recent)
Napoleon Dynamite
Zoolander
Rushmore
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Ghostbusters
Dumb & Dumber
Trading Places
Shaun of the Dead
Blazing Saddles
The Big Lebowski
The Jerk
Team America: World Police
The Dictator
Borat
Groundhog Day
Anchorman
Monty Python's Life of Brian
Monty Python and the Holy Grail

And if we want dramatic:
13 tzameti
City of God

We were talking about a few other movie night formats too, like possibly having short episodes or movie clips to play as bumpers between movies, or while we wait for people to join in.

Also, and I'm just putting this out there. I was thinking it might be unique to do a "BIG" trilogy showcase once or twice a year. Really get the word out and have a giant showing.  We'd have to work out the details.

The Dark Knight Trilogy anyone :)

I like the enthusiasm guys! And wildcard, that looks just like a top 100 list I was selecting movies from this morning! Whatever helps to get people to tune in! If you guys want, we can stop adding to the traditional user picked movie list and continue to draw from it randomly until they run out then move directly to the comedy list as our main list.

OR

We can use the comedy list and make an action list as well. Then watch one comedy and one action each week. This seems like the two most popular genres of film. This way I don't need to chase people around or bother anyone by asking for movie picks.

OR

We continue what we are doing but my main list is only 18 long and not growing at all.

Your thoughts?

hmm.. a few of the big-action films might not be as great in standard def though..  I remember watching a crummy copy of iron man 1.. and didn't really like it that much... THEN i saw it in theaters and was like.. fffffffffffffffff...

Oh man, so many ideas floating around.  I love it.

I think we should continue with the list that you have from before as the primary movie source, and if that starts to dwindle then we move on to bigger and better things - basically, play it by ear.
I like the action/comedy list idea, but there are lots of movies that don't fit those genres and it's nice to throw those in every once in awhile.

And as for the "specials" idea, we at one point had the idea of a TV show night, with mini-episodes or little random videos being thrown in to the mix, all queued up and playing one after the other.  I think this would be a fun little treat to add on to the regular showings maybe once a month or once every two months.

And I really like the idea of basically streaming a marathon of a trilogy.  :D  That would be super fun.  And with a really well-known trilogy like the recent Batman trilogy, people wouldn't feel obligated to see every one, since they likely already know the story.

Well I don't want streaming movies to become a full time job for Hoff haha.

Hahahaha, no worries, I love this.  ;D

This may a special even we do one day..   and you get a badge... officially recognized and tendered by Hoffman

ffff..... all day movie marathon... start 10 am.. 16 hours total.. that's 7x  2hour movies with 15min breaks inbetween..

I think more active discussion of movies would be good as well..

Not this coming Saturday for me though, I've got stuff going on during mid-day.

I like the idea of keeping the main movie list (i.e. the A movie list). I think this will keep growing, and if not we can just pull movies out of the B list to add in. Let's keep doing the "same theme" encore movies, the B list can be long and we'll just pick movies that match well with the A list perhaps?

And regarding the clips, perhaps we just get a few funny clips for intro, intermission, and bumpers?

James Bond marathon over winter holiday break? I could do a poll on which James Bond movies we do as I have all of them.

I agree, let's set a time to meet in the IRC and discuss this stuff. I can't tonight, need to get some sleep before work tomorrow.

There is one thing I think we can agree on right now. Holiday movie nights. Either Monday or Tuesday at movie night time is good for me. I can't do it Tuesday before 9pm ct because I'm making a crap ton of gingerbread for a house building contest.

Sadly I'm usually scheduled randomly between monday and thursday so I don't think I'll be able to attend most of them.

This is just for the IRC to discuss a calendar for special movie night events for the upcoming year. Movie night will remain Saturday for the foreseeable future. No worries!

EDIT: reading over my post I see now how that sounded confusing. My bad.

I've also got them all on my computer so I could definitely stream as well.  :)  Though it depends on where I'll be at the time.  If I'm back at my parent's house, the bandwidth will likely be too little to even watch the stream, much less stream it myself.  :(  So hopefully it doesn't happen when I'm back home.

I'm completely swamped with schoolwork this week, so I'll have to sit out of this discussion, but I trust you guys to make good decisions.  :)  Or maybe by some luck I'll be able to make it.  We'll see.

CALLING ALL MOVIE WATCHERS!!!

We are in quite the predicament here. This upcoming saturday we have no streamer... I am working, Hoff has an event and Wildcard (who offered to be a backup) is also not available.

Is there anyone who has the processing power and upload speed who would be willing to go through a short tutorial of sorts and fill in as streamer for this weekend?

If not, Im sure Hoff, Wildcard and I can figure something out... Maybe..

Thank you all!! Cheers

This is a very good idea. I will look forward for future movies.
Thanks! They have been going pretty well so far but we can always use more participation! Feel free to PM me with a movie pick of your own!

I've been a ghost, too much travel for work, on the road constantly.  We gonna try to get one started?  I'm down for next weekend.

Next week? :)

This week and next week, and the week after.  Although with next weekend being Thanksgiving weekend that might end up being a bit tricky for some people.  Or maybe not.   ;D

Alright everybody, just remember that Geekhack Movie Night is still on for tonight!  Streaming will begin at 10pm Eastern time (9pm Central), which is in 40 minutes so start prepping your popcorn and snacks.

We will be watching 28 Days Later, as picked by YoungMichael88 himself.

Stream location is http://www.livestream.com/movie_streamer, as usual.

Hope to see you there!

PS the countdown timer in the OP is incorrect.  Here is an updated countdown timer!
