Can imagine her "sleep" ability will be highly effective in putting heroes like Reinhardt to sleep while leaving the rest of a team somewhat vulnerable.

I'm guessing it won't be headshot dependent...if that's the case (and it's balanced as such), it's a lot easier to be effective than you'd think.

Yeah, the sleep seems like it's going to be OP until people get used to it. On that same token, I imagine it's going to be a pain to coordinate her ult in the average game.

I don't know if I'll get to play Ana, I don't play a lot of offensive characters. And if I do it's mostly Soldier 76

Finished my placement matches going 5-5 and got an even 50 rating.  Considering two of my placement matches we got absolutely demolished I'm actually quite happy with that.

Confirmed, Ana does not read different boxes. Damage/healing is applied the same no matter where you hit. I still expect her to be a challenging character to play because of a diverse kit, need for team coordination, and lack of mobility.

I took 3 days off, played like 5 matches yesterday, and feel my skill level has dropped off significantly. Gotta at least play a match a day to stay sharp in my case.

Reinhardt still my fav.

I finally learned to play Lucio. Not as fun as it always looked, but at least caused some enviro deaths.

Also, Mei is so fun to pester people with. I just often have to switch off of her if my team is horrible.

So blizzard is changing the public facing ranking because of thinking like this. The rank is currently something like a percentile. Around 50 is good! Or at least if be happy with being better than roughly half the players participating in competitive on the server (er, I am happy hovering around 50). Top 500 player on the server starts somewhere in the 80s.

I think it would be interesting to conduct a study to see if there is a game ranking system that doesn't make a majority of the players feel like crap. Mid 60s is about top 20%. Last I heard the mean in LOL was around high silver. It cracks me up that there's a perception that only the top 5-10% of all the dedicated players in the world have something to feel good about.

Here's the rank distribution for Overwatch.

Mid 60s is actually top 5%. I assume they'll try to make the bell curve wider in the future so that top 500 starts at like 90 instead of mid 70s.

Yikes, they made it even *worse* than it needed to be. I wonder what on earth they are modling this on... because I was assuming from the snippets I read that it was normal, but that's not standard normal at all.

In truth, I think that part of the problem is that if you tried to plot all players and their actual individual skill level (a challenging thing to quantify) it would look like a gamma distribution.

It looks very much like standard normal to me. Care to explain why you think it doesn't?
It's definitely modeled on normal distribution at least, which makes sense since that represents how skilled players are fairly well.
See the ELO rating distribution of a million Chess players for example.

So Elo is specifically constructed to be normal. Like, that's the assumption, and so saying Elo results in a normal curve is a little off because well, that's what it was designed to do. In this case, if it was standard normal then rank 95 would be where the top 5% land, but it's clearly much, much steeper. It's possible that they are using a conversion or a different way of handling rank separate from the PDF, but it would be odd to use a similar, but not exactly right, set of numbers.

Another interstitial thing about Elo: the good professor made the assumption that everyone's variance would be equal to make the math work, but he suspected that wouldn't be the case. Indeed, it is not; lower skill players have a significantly greater degree of variance than higher skilled players. Modern improvements to Elo have tried some different stuff, including the logistic distribution, which might be what's going on here, but it's hard to tell. It's just so odd the tails are so long and there's so much movement in the middle.

I'd really be interested in finding out what's under the hood of assorted competitive game rankings, but they don't often talk about it publicly.

Now I see what you meant. You thought that since the ranks are numbered 1-100 they should mirror percentages, so SR87 you should be top 13% since 100-87=13.
It would nice if they decided to just pull back the curtain and showed people where they actually are in terms of percentage. The only problem I can see with it is that you can lose a rank when you're not playing if enough people pass you (although personally I wouldn't mind that).

As far as I've gathered this is how the ranking system works.
Just like with the Elo system if you're the underdog and you win then you'll gain more than if you're not the underdog. It also cares about how well you did in the match, that might be as simple as how many medals you got and how much time you spent on fire, but I'd assume it's more complicated than that. It would make sense for it to take the individual skill ratings of the players you eliminated and were eliminated by into account (CS does this).
There is another very important factor that a lot of people don't seem to know about, and that is win/lose streaks.
A friend and I gained 10 ranks in two days because after we got on a ~5 game win streak we started gaining exactly one rank's worth of progress after each subsequent win. When we inevitably lost we only lost about 1/5th of a rank. Likewise if you're on a losing streak you lose one rank per game. I'm very glad they did this because it means ranks will be able to readjust more efficiently.
