Where do I buy those nice folding knives?
« on: Wed, 30 December 2015, 06:22:28 »
I see them posted often and wondering where to buy, which brand/model to go for.

I NEED it for the true unboxing experience.

Which knives? I'm pretty sure I've seen a few different brands posted around.

Oh okay.  :)  Well I've seen Kershaw posted quite a bit (Massdrop sells them from time to time as well), and I've posted my Spyder a few times (I also have a Kershaw, just don't post it). I can't think of any other brands off the top of my head, but I know there is at least one major one that I'm missing.  :-/

FWIW, I like my Spyder better.

Oh and there is a knife thread around here too if you're interested.

Hopefully I'm answering the right kind of knife and am not confused.  :P

Depends what your after and what laws you have where you live me for example in the UK am only allowed a folding none locking less than 3" knife so spider co is pretty awesome with the grass hopper although at home I have a little Kershaw shuffle which is a awesome little cheap knife I use all the time, otherwise might be worth asking commoncurt knives are kinda his thing :p

I narrowed it down to these 4.

http://www.edgepedition.com/store/p118/Spyderco_Manix_2_~_All_Black__~_C101GBBK2.html

http://www.edgepedition.com/store/p119/Spyderco_Bradley_Folder_~_C134CF.html

http://www.edgepedition.com/store/p54/Zero_Tolerance_0350.html

I own Spyderco, Benchmade, and the exact Zero Tolerance you linked.  My favorites are my Benchmade Osbourne and my ZT.  And the ZT is much cheaper on Amazon or Knifecenter.com if you end up buying that.  It is very large though.

I have the ZT you posted (with the stainless colored blade). It's definitely my best knife, but like headpantsnow said, it's a larger knife. I wind up carrying it the least and usually carry one of my smaller knives more times than not. I would recommend doing some research on the different steel used in the knives as well.

Most knifes are illegal in Straya,

Most will be confiscated by customs upon arrival, and you'll probably get a free visit from the police.

I asked a while back.  There's a few good links in that thread.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Wow, thats super strict :o

With regards to OP, I am just getting into EDC (everyday carry) and got a Kershaw Cyro II. If you want a smaller blade get the Cyro 1, but so far I am super happy with it! Came super sharp out of the box and looks amazing!

Here's a picture I pulled off the interwebs!

A bonus is that it's around 30 bucks IIRC!
Such artisan, many caps, very keyboard.

I have that knife as well. Picked it up for $17 on Amazon. I usually carry it as it is thin and gets a nice edge really easily.

Edit: That Manix is a nice looking knife. The S30V can be a little tricky to sharpen. You'll want a good knife sharpener for it. Practice on cheaper knives too before you try to sharpen an expensive one.

I have a lot of pocket knives. Some that were $15 and some that are $500+ and I will say that the price really doesn't make it any more or less useful. Get something of good quality and keep it sharp and clean and it'll last your whole life. One of my favorite knives is an inexpensive Benchmade i bought nearly 20 years ago that has served me just as well as my Hinderer XM-18s.

Places I have bought new knives from that I would recommend are:
http://www.bladehq.com
http://www.gpknives.com

Since i'm not a collector, i put all my knives to use... i have no problems buying used knives from people that take care of their gear. I've bought a couple knives from people on http://www.bladeforums.com and even though they like their drama, they are good group of enthusiasts.

I've had a lot of cool knives. Hinderer xm18 is a sick one. But I always come back to spyderco. Manix 2 lightweight is my favorite!

Bladeforums and usualsuspect are the best forums.

But I just googled chris reeve and omg that Sabenza knives... thanks for the heads up demik haha.

Thing is I'm such a lazy bum when it comes to maintenance and stuff. How long before you need to sharpen on average? Mostly just gonna use mine to open boxes, nothing heavy use.

Yeah same here! Haha honestly I've never sharpened any of mine but I don't beat them or use them on anything besides boxes. Not sure how quick you'd have to, if you were using it for work or chores, yard work, other labor.. Another thing, look at the blade width and type. I have found that I prefer spyderco style blade width because it does what I like better which is cut boxes open. It is thinner. That means it's not as heavy duty for labor intensive stuff like scraping bark off of trees to start fires, prying stuff open, etc. but perfect for cutting stuff. Each blade has a different purpose. I do have a bench made and love the axis lock. But I like the spyderco blade better.

Benchmade was my first favorite knife company.  Love the AXIS lock, and their Autos.  I only bought autos for long time.

Finally got some CR small Sebenzas.  They are beautiful.  Definitely live up to the hype IMO.

Okay BladeHQ won't ship to Singapore.  It looks like most of the sites want you to contact them first to make sure that they can ship to you.

I think that Knifeworks.com will, but it looks like it could be a hassle for first time customers.

How about knifeart? Are they recommended as well? They have the ones I want in stock.

Did you get the Insingo or just the normal one btw?

I'm pretty much fixed on small sebenza 21. Maybe just getting the original titanium handle, didn't like the one sided look of the CF handle.

I'm actually going to be buying a small CF one from knifeArt any day now  :)

I have a small regular 21 and a small Insingo.  I like them both, but if I had to choose one it would be the regular blade. It's just plain sexy.

Like I said I'm definitely about to get a small CF handled one myself.   I was doing the same thing you were doing, but in the end decided to get a original one first.

Well based on that experience, I should just get the CF right away. Now I need to learn about this country's import laws.

I think it should be fine since it's such a small knife.

If it helps, I would have still gotten a original small 21 even if I did get the CF one first.  I just decided to get the regular first.

Yea that thing is such a beauty. Owning more than one is totally fine IMO.

Tbh I'm actually not a CF guy, but you get that feeling of it being the "best" version of something that it sometimes messed up with logic haha.

Just asked my wife for her opinion and I can see her body language actually preferring the regular version so I don't know :(
