it's still fairly warm here (well, warm for KC--we're talking mid to upper 80's in October, when the temps should be averaging in the low to mid 70's), and it's humid. This wouldn't be bad except our AC/Heater combo's motor died over the weekend, meaning we have no cooling, heat or air circulation. So our apartment gets warm, humid and very stale frequently. We only have two fans: the ceiling fan in the dining room, and the oscillating fan in my room. Neither moves much air. The apartment complex has loaned us an industrial fan used for drying carpet--which is okay, because our living room was partially flooded in a storm over the weekend--and it only manages to make the living room more humid. We keep opening the windows and sliding glass doors, but the problem is it keeps raining at least twice a day, so we keep having to close them to prevent the carpet from getting wet again (opening the door didn't cause the initial flood btw--the sliding glass door was closed all weekend). Oh, it's also ragweed season, so my nose is running, my eyes are itchy and I have a congested chest--which the humidity isn't helping. My asthma is also flaring up, making things like taking out the trash very difficult.
The worst part? We have no idea how long this will last. The part they used to temporarily fix the AC a couple of weeks ago had to be taken out of their only replacement unit, and no one saw this coming, not even maintenance. Because most of the apartments still have the old style AC units, they have to order a new one for us, so we're not only out an AC, but if it takes too long we'll end up having to deal with cold weather as well. And it can get very cold very fast in KC--it's not too rare for us to have heat waves in mid September and near freezing temps in mid October, and that's not counting the uncommon but still far from unheard of ice storm in mid to late October.
