Must be some important tapes if you still have them. Didn't picture tp as the VCR type with the usual quest for ultimate fidelity~~

This was the plan.

Connect PC to hdmi2composite adapter,  connect to vcr input, connect vcr output to TV

Calibrate entire video chain @ 300nit.

Downsample Back 2 the future, 4K UHD, to Composite resolution, Hit RECORD on VCR.  Go do something else for 2 hours.

Come back,  Revel in the impossible combination of a copy of Back2thefuture HDR VHS.

But now it's not gonna happen, because VCRs have gone missing.

You can just send those to me so you have less clutter and more space. I want to make it easier for you to find stuff, just send me all your video games.  :thumb:

This is curious. Isn't B2TF not yet available though on Ultra HD?

If you really are serious about making an hdr vhs, well i do not think a normal vcr would do the job as color get compressed when going on tape (especially long play) there was a few HD tape that used vhs with digital signaling on them but then it came out after dvd if i remember correctly, so not many chances you have one (or were you already an image quality freak?)

Buy a replacement VCR? I sure you could almost get one for free or very cheap.

Well, the HDR will be tone mapped to my TV,  The native video levels of the VHS doesn't matter. Because the whole video chain will be calibrated.  So whatever translation happens, it's end to end and (theoretically) should function independent of color compression.

The only issue where this may not work as intended, is if the Video out on the VCR is not a mirror of the recording. If that is the case then mapping can not be done.
