Do you use the dense, high-quality filters in your HVAC system? Spring for the best ones you can afford and seal up the openings to the outside.

Forcing air flow through a filter will actually remove the grit from the air. There are "ionizers" that put a static charge on all the particles in the air which will make them immediately stick to the nearest surface and get them out of the air that you are breathing, but they stay in the room. As soon as you turn off the ionizer they let go and fall back out into the environment.

the hvac seems to use way too much power to work as a filter. it's also not itself a sealed enclosure, it pulls in alot of air from just around the unit.

Without the AC compressor running, the fan uses far less power. If you have a pile of rags or towels, those are often enough to filter out particles.

There is not an easy or complete solution.

I own a LEVOIT Core 400S.   It's okay, but really just a much more expensive Corsi-Rosenthal box.  And the filters are really expensive.  I'd just build a Corsi-Rosenthal box if I wasn't concerned with aesthetics.

I bought and returned 4 different air purifiers before I settled on the Blue Air 211. Works great, no weird smell, no ozone setting, powerful, and I like the design much more than the others I tried because it draws air 360°. The onus to purchase was the horrible smoke from CA wildfires a few years back, and now it's a staple of my home. I put it on a 1.5ft tall wood pedestal for some height. Excellent air purifier.

Sometimes with certain filter types there is an initial strong chemical odor that goes away after the first few days of usage.
But some brands that smell never goes away, the TaoTronics one I returned made my room smell like paint and I'd get physically ill when I turned it on.

Are the sensor models worth it ? are they sensitive enough to actually make a difference ?

We're really living the Dystopian nightmare,  First thing Tp4 does upon waking, Checks the air sensors and the neighboring air sensors.  Checks the day's wind speed and direction, calculate the minimum lead time Tp4 will have when a pollution cloud rolls in to close windows/doors.

The sensor actually seems to work.  I use it to keep down dust around my keyboards usually.  It’s never showed above the number 8.  But the other day I had windows replaced in my living room.  They cut them out with a saw and the room smelled like burning wood. Was also quite dusty.  I put the unit in that room and it immediately read 146. It slowly went back down to below 10 a few hours after they finished.

It does give off a smell.  Not too strong, but slightly similar to lingering vinegar.

These CFM ratings are kind of misleading.

They should really include, CFM vs Decibels,  you can't put a home use 9999 cfm @ 150db.

I put it on full speed and I'm about 7 feet away from it.  I measure 53db.  Ambient for my computer room is 39db

I'd say low speed, 42db is very quiet.  Full speed is loud but not enough to cause hearing problems from prolonged exposure.  I generally keep it on 1 or 2 (it goes to 4).  Of course, I have no idea if it actually filters anything. lol

Should've spent the extra $100-200 to get a really nice one imo. Air purifiers you very much get what you pay for in terms of build and filter quality, and anything under $100 is gonna be ****ty (at least in my experience).

They don't make the small ones any more expensive though.

I'd like to see them do teardowns, and deep dive on motors and pwm drivers, and bearings but no one's doing that.

I will say that horizontally mounted fans last WAY longer than vertical ones. Or at least don't make any annoying rattling noises after a while since they get more even use. I owned 4 vertical mounted fan purifiers and every single one started making noise after less than 6 months, never had that issue with either of the horizontal fan units I have. One I specifically cleaned 2x a month because I believed the noise was caused by debris buildup, but if the filter is working properly the fan shouldn't get buildup in the first place.

Winix 5500, TaoTronics H13, and Levoit Vital 100 I had to return all of them because the fans started making annoying noises. The Winix also had a bright ass blue light and a 'plasma wave' setting that made me feel sick. The TaoTronics filter produced an awful chemical smell. The Levoit just got super noisy after less than 2 months.

With the Medify Air MA-25 it was good, but I just felt like it could be better (worse to worse, Amazon has very lenient return policies) so I went with the BlueAir 211+ to just try it out and that was the one I settled on. Powerful simple unit, I've had it now for nearly 2 years and it is just as quiet as when I first got it.

They're here...

The vital 100s seems to throw more air at 5watt than the core300 at 6 watt. At max, I'd still say the Vital 100s puts out more air.

The impeller is bigger on the horizontal 100s unit.  But even though it throws more air, it's hard to tell if it has more static pressure/ filtration throughput.

The Core mini, honestly this one doesn't seem worth it, because it's $42 and very low output even on the highest setting, where it's quite loud already.

Yup, vinegar-y smell on all the units.

Fan noise is acceptable, but it sound like ball bearing, which you can hear quite well on the lowest setting.

It's subtle enough to sleep through,  but certainly not audiophile capable or truly quiet.

I get that these need to be ball-bearing, but hrrrrrmm.... they could be damp-ed better.

Aesthetics:

Yea, they look very kewl, pill shaped, soft edges, futuristic minimalist like something out of Portal (game). Easily blends into backdrop.

Can confirm it's working.

Itchy eyes which TP4 has had persisted an entire month since the Alberta burn began has 100% alleviated within the confines of filtered rooms.

--, This of course also brings into light the impractical nature of air conditioning and air filtration.
--,, We pollute our way into this mess, and pollute some more to do temporary filtering/cooling.
--,,, The hole is dug deeper overall.

Loose factoids of late,

- The conditions of Orange sky 300+ AQI, is the equivalent of smoking 1 cigarette PER hour.

- @ 100 AQI, it's ~3 cigarettes a day.

Totally Yummo !! Free, all natural, cigarettes,

- An increase in PM2.5 of 10 (micro-gram per cubic meter) causes a reduction of 0.75 years worth of lifespan.

So for example, In a city like Delhi, India, which has an Average Yearly Aqi of 100+, people living there are losing 5-7 years worth of lifespan vs a city of lower average.

Ughhh... got excited, closed the window, lit an incense to test the filter, yea the sensor works, but just like all the others, basically completely ineffective against aromatics.

Honestly, wth even is incense, feels super stuffy. why do people burn these. dumass hughmahns.

Studies show incense produce 4x as much particulates vs cigarettes. So from an air quality perspective if you burn incense, you might as well smoke cigarettes instead.

Smells like ozone, like a kinda chlorine electricity smell. It is medically dangerous in enclosed spaces and if left on too long, for a few days I could not figure out what was making me sick, but after reading up on it I made sure to keep it off.

Some time with the winix c545,  now, it has a 3watt mode and a 4 watt mode,  the levoit 100s and c300 goes down to 5 watt and 6 watt.

The winix with its much bigger impellar is throwing more air. I am confident of that at this point.

Horizontal units are also more quiet, they seem to uniformly run at lower rpm.

Can't escape ball bearing sound if you got it close to you, it's all ball bearing.

The only disadvantage of the 545 is it has a very small filter for its size, the older version 535 had a filter 50% bigger. as is the new 555 and 5300/5500.

Those are made in korea, while the 545 is made in thailand.

Does that really matter, at the price, given that you do get a pretty big motor overall. I suppose not. Smaller filter size does mean lower efficiency. This I'm not sure is a problem except for people that live in long extended fire/smoke seasons.

I would recommend people buy the larger 555 or 5300 units instead of the 545.  The app is also down at the moment, won't even work, so they're clearly not the best software team.

If going levoit which are better looking than winix, I could recommend the 100s and their larger 200s unit. But winix seems to go on sale more often at costco.

The vertical units,  if it suits the room visually, and foot print, go for it, but Tp4 is quite sure that they're a bit louder even at the lower modes. more turbulent wind noise because of the dual air guide and higher rpm throughout using a smaller impeller.

One suspects these units can definitely overheat if the filter becomes too clogged. the motor is dependent on adequate airflow to cool the hub.

that's why I got the one I did, because every vertical unit I got started making noise after a short duration. tbf I was running them all day at home during rona and cali fires, but the horizontal unit I've had about 2 years and nary a rattle.

When you work and play next to it all day the bearing rattle can drive one to madness. One I accidentally kicked the grill in trying to quiet it, luckily papa Bezos took it back no prob ;)

They make a really nice fanless model I have heard very good things about. My doc uses it in her office and at home, but it is like $800

Man that is brutal and it is just getting worse. It's been going on so long now different wildfires are meeting in the middle and becoming larger ones. How can humans even combat this? It seems like an impossible task.

Went outside to do some yard work,  Came back wit  a bit of rash on arms.  The normal areas where sensitive to allergens. Nothing major, but it just puts into perspective that the invisible dangers are Omnipresent with regard to PM2.5.

Can confirm, the Winix Plasma Wave causes a slight stinging/tickling sensation at the back of nasal /throat interface.

Recommendation: Disable.
