Sm0rt home devices
« on: Wed, 02 August 2023, 18:42:47 »
So we all saw that anime where ha(kers blow up houses by controlling the electronics in the building.

Do you guys have smart appliances on the network?

Do we need to isolate from main network ?

Do you guys think a hacked AC can be explodzed ?

Yeah, I really need my fridge and toaster oven to connect to all my devices and have my location. A wi-fi password for my damn ice cream maker???
And where the **** am I going to take my fridge that it needs to have my location data?

If it's got one of those built in tablets, it can send you reminders that you need to buy m0ar watermelon.

My house came with a (semi) smart thermostat... I disabled it.
Not only do I have no use for 99% of the functions but I'm pretty sure most of the smart features are no longer supported.

Which is a pretty good example of why I won't buy any of this stuff, until these companies can come up with a universal standard so they work together (and fix a lot of their issues) I won't be investing in any of if. Too much incompatibility among companies, much less their own product lines and their habit of dropping support every few years.

My feelings exactly. I like old-school knobs and dials that control only what is directly behind them.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

Only "Smart Devices" we have in the house are TV's, which are allocated to their own network separate from the computers/phones/tablets.  Thermostat is a digital readout but not smart. . .

The 2 potentially dangerous devices Tp4 have is the AC and Dehumidifier, which have compressors that can overheat.  But since they're probably thermally fused, it shouldn't cause a fire right?

These smart products seem like such a fad, like why do we need cameras and screens on a fridge, like what purpose does that serve. The only reason why I feel that companies like amazon are pushing these smart products is to spy and record us. Like that's what I get from those home devices like the alexa. I already get kinda paranoid from companies recording me and what I say so why would I have these products in my home. I get digital thermostats that adjust the temperature like that's cool, but it's not smart to make everything connected by bluetooth/wifi like it comes across as dumb tech pr.

So, setup the amazon air monitor on its own guest network, like a mini-vlan in the router, it freaks out randomly now and randomly disconnects every few days.

It was doing just fine on the main 2.4ghz pipe for solid month.

Seems like they'd be doing this deliberately so they can better sn00ps on you,  AND AND.... They save your wifi passwurd to ale><a.
